St. Mary on the Hill July 10, 2016 This week Fr. David Arnoldt and I are shuffling off to Buffalo for a Retreat of the Jesus Caritas Fraternity of Priests. The Fraternity is an International Organization that helps Diocesan priests maintain a strong spiritual life. Our Fraternities are based on the spirituality of Blessed Charles de Foucauld. Some of the charisms that marked the life of Brother Charles are hospitality, love of Scripture, devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, simplicity of life and a love for the poor. The Fraternity is a brotherhood formed by five to seven priests who meet once every month for Scripture sharing, contemplative prayer before the Eucharist, and a shared review of life with ample time for some friendly conversation and fellowship, usually over a meal. Today there are about 300 hundred Fraternities in the United States, totaling over fourteen hundred members. There are four fraternities in our Diocese. Frs. Dave Arnoldt, Michael Hull, Tom Healy, and Peter Clarke are the members of my Fraternity group. For the last two years I have been U.S, Responsible for the Fraternity. And I am grateful for the volunteer help of Catherine Tribby, Shannon Axon, Lisa McArdle, and Christy McArdle who try their best to keep the Fraternity organized. But as I often say, Trying to keep a group of priests organized is like herding a bunch of cats. The Spiritual Director for this year s Retreat is our patriarch, Fr. Dan Danielson. Born and raised in Oakland, Calif., Fr. Danielson entered the seminary after eighth grade -- a decision that he calls a terrible idea then and now -- and was eventually ordained into the newly created Oakland diocese. He was ordained on March 2, 1963 and soon after his ordination he formed the first Jesus Caritas Fraternity in the United States. In the years that followed, he helped launch numerous programs, including the Vatican II Institute for Continuing Education of Clergy, and assumed diverse diocesan leadership roles. At the national level, he was a member of the U.S. bishops Committee on Priestly Life and Ministry, co-founded the National Organization for Continuing Education of Roman Catholic Clergy, and helped write a bishops conference document, The Spiritual Renewal of the American Priesthood. Perhaps the most deeply felt ministry in his own life, Fr. Danielson was elected the first U.S. Responsible of the Iesus Caritas Fraternity of Priests. He is also a member -- his group of six has been meeting for 50 years. His passion for encouraging fraternity among priests also inspired him to lead 100 priests retreats over his lifetime. Reflecting on his life, he expressed gratitude to God for having been a priest at the time of the Second Vatican Council. It was the most exciting time in the church in 400 years at least, he recalled. It was so positive, so creative, so adventuresome, so open to trying things to serve the kingdom of God. I would not trade any of my life (with the exception of the minor seminary) to do it over again. The other travel plans I have for the summer will come in August. I have signed on to be the chaplain for a cruise from Boston to Montreal. I am delighted that there are about 15 parishioners who will be traveling with me. The highlight of the cruise will come on August 26 th when we make port in Quebec City. From the ship we will make a pilgrimage (less than a 15 minute walk really) to the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec ( Our Lady of Quebec City ). It is the primatial church of Canada and the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Quebec, the oldest in the Americas north of the Spanish colonies in Florida and New Mexico. In 2013 the cathedral celebrated its 350 th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, a holy door was constructed. It is the only Holy Door in all of the Americas that has been so designated by the Pope. I think I have the names of all parishioners who will be on the Cruise with me. But please give Martha Kearns a call in the parish office, so that we can send out notice of a meeting before the cruise. In addition to prayers at the Holy Door, I ve arranged for a 10:00 am Mass at the Cathedral-Basilica. I thought of continuing our pilgrimage out to the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré which would have been a wonderfully nostalgic tour for me as my parents took us there as children, but I decided it would be rushing things too much. So after Mass we will then be free to roam the Old Quebec which is a beautiful city with lots of history, beautiful buildings, cute boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. The Church is only a 3 minute walk (200 meters) from the Hotel Chateau Frontenac which has a commanding view of the old city and harbor. Will Cook also has some serious travel plans. He will take off with Patrick May this Friday for the World Young Day gathering in Krakow, Poland. The Holy Father will be present at this huge event and Will and Patrick have signed on to be volunteer workers. It has been a great joy to have Will as our seminarian intern for the last two months. It would be a great blessing for our faith community if Will were to return in a few years as a parish priest here at St. Mary on the Hill. We pray that he and Patrick will have safe travels and we thank Will for all of his good work. If the victim in today s Gospel story was your neighbor or your friend would you be more willing to act like the Samaritan? So what is Jesus telling us? What is it that makes all people neighbors?

NEW MINISTRY: CATHOLIC PARTNERSHIP FOR THE DISABLED St. Mary on the Hill is organizing a Disability Ministry to help address and facilitate all of our parishioners with disabilities, especially in encouraging them to receive the Sacraments and to fully participate in the Mass. In order to accomplish our goal, St. Mary s does need a little bit of feedback and help: - For those who have or care for a person with any type of disability, if you would please complete and return the survey found on our website: www. stmaryonthehill.org. Surveys can be returned by dropping them into the collection basket, or by bringing them to the Parish Office. These surveys will give us a better idea of the number and variety of needs to be addressed. - For anyone interested in being a part of the initiative, we re looking for volunteers! No prior training or experience is required, and as of now, your time would be spent helping to train other active members of the parish (Eucharistic ministers, ushers, etc.) in how to serve those with disabilities. If interested please email Mrs. Estelle Duncan at EDuncan081954@yahoo.com. Our goal is to eventually be able to fully accommodate all those with disabilities at every Mass. We thank you for your help, and really look forward to fully including all in the receiving of the Sacraments! THANK YOU FROM GOALA, ETHIOPIA! Dear s at St. Mary on the Hill, Your incredible giving astounds thesisters and children at Goala. They say, But why would strangers help us? You are really helping them to have better lives.
