Dear Parishioners, Last week I began some reflections on participation in the Mass in general but with a special view to helping folks feel more comfortable with Extraordinary Form on those occasions when they might be attending such a Mass. I began by mentioning that the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium (SC), instructs us that if we are going to fruitfully participate in the Mass (or any other liturgy), we must have the right disposition, allow our minds to be formed by our voices, and cooperate with divine grace (cf. SC 11). This idea of our minds being attuned to our voices comes from the rule of St. Benedict (Chapter 19) as he instructs monks on how to pray the psalms. Pope Benedict XVI picked up this theme again in a 2012 catechesis on prayer, saying, that the first requirement for a proper liturgical celebration is that it be prayer, conversation with God, first listening and then response (emphasis mine). One of the important but challenging aspects of the language of the Mass being in Latin is that it takes extra effort to listen. Admittedly, most of us even if we have studied Latin in school are not familiar enough with the language to listen to it as easily as we listen to English. What is important and good about this challenge is that it reminds us that prayer is hard work! (Soul of the Apostolate, 28-29). We have to read along in our missal or on the propers sheet to understand what is being said. One of the common reasons many will offer for why they don t go to Mass or why they find it boring (regardless of what the language is) is I don t get anything out of Mass. But really, what we need to consider is, What am I putting into the Mass? We can t sit by passively. What should we be putting in? First, we have to fight the temptation to zone out or say, I ve heard this before. Then we have to apply our minds to the words that we are receiving, whether we hear them or read them or both. The first and most important place where we participate, is therefore, our minds and hearts. To be continued. May God bless you and keep you in His care, and may the Blessed Mother intercede for you, Father Cibelli St. Mary s is collecting blessed palms to make ashes for Ash Wednesday. If you have blessed palms at home from last year, please bring them to the church by next Sunday, March 3 rd for collection.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE: Spring 2019 campaign begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6, and ends on Palm Sunday, April 14. With the abortion industry aggressively working to expand late-term abortion and infanticide everywhere, the first and most important thing we should do is pray. God is faithful, and He will use your faithful prayer vigil presence in front of the local abortion facility at 160 W. Washington St. to save the lives of the most innocent among us, the preborn children, and their mothers from a lifetime of regret. We do not attempt to cover with our presence the entire 24 hours/day, 7 days per week of the 40 days campaign; but is it too much to ask of every one of us (who is physically capable) that we put our faith in action and come to pray in front of this facility, even for a few minutes, at least once during the 2 days each week this place performs abortions? Former abortion workers have stated that the more people who are praying in front of the facility absolutely impacts the number of women who go through with their abortion. Our prayerful presence at the site sends a powerful message to the community about the tragic reality of abortion (many people stop and tell us they did not even know what happens here!). It also serves as a call to repentance for those who work at the abortion center and those who patronize the facility. See Right to Life notice in bulletin for more details on the dates the facility is open. Right to Life: -- There's an abortion facility in Hagerstown at 160 W. Washington St, Suite 100, just 3 doors from St. Mary Church, and there's a serious need for adults and children to be there praying for a change of mind of those entering. There's an opportunity for sidewalk counseling if you're comfortable doing that, but first, prayer at the site is very powerful. Volunteers are needed 2 days each week from 9 to 11 AM: every Thurs & every other Tues from 9 to 11 AM; every other Sat from 9 to 11 AM. Open Tues, Feb 26 & March 12; Thurs, Feb 28 & March 7 and 14; Sat. March 9 & 23 We also need another "shift" to stay until the women come out after the abortion so we can provide some help. Please email Janet Neel dneel@myactv.net. Two questions of a similar topic that I decided to put together: We were discussing about what saints do for us in heaven. But to this day, he doesn t really understand why it is good to pray to saints. I put St. Michael s prayer on Facebook and received this reply: We cannot pray to an angel to defend us. We can defend ourselves by the Blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. (which Jesus died and rose again for you and me). Father, The first thing to realize is that many people who attack the Catholic Church and her teachings will only accept Biblical evidence. Therefore, according to Matthew 18:10, Jesus says See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. Jesus says THEIR angels. Therefore, according to Jesus, people have personal Guardian Angels that protect them. In the Book of Revelation chapter 12, we have the story of St. Michael who protects the woman giving birth, Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. Revelation 12:7-8. In the book of Tobit, 12:12, the angel Raphael, in heaven, presented Tobit and Sarah s prayers to God. The angel was acting as an intercessor for them: I can now tell you that when you, Tobit and Sarah prayed, it was I who presented and read the record of your prayers before the Glory of the Lord.. Many Christians do not believe that those in heaven remain part of the Mystical Body of Christ, as mentioned by St. Paul, in Romans 12:4-8, where he writes in part, we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another. This connection to each other does not end at death, because St. Paul writes What will separates us from the love of Christ?. Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? Romans 8:35-38. Therefore, since these type of people do not believe in the Mystical Body of Christ, they do not see the saints in heaven as connected to us. St. Paul is very clear on the nature of the Mystical Body of Christ. It is as if you wanted to go to New York City to visit your friend. You would call them and say what is the best way to get to your father s house. They would tell you do not take this road, avoid the roadwork here, make sure that you take this exit. In the same way we ask our brothers and sister in Christ, to help us find the way to our father s house, since they are already there.
