January 13th, 2019 The Baptism of the Lord Parish Community News & Events A special thank you to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Group for their generous donation of $600 to Saint Josaphat s Church. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated. Catholic Charismatic Prayer Group (Spanish) Mass Wednesday, February 6th,2019 All are welcome to attend! ST. MICHAEL'S PANTRY. On December 18th, I hand delivered a check for $1,200 from the generous parishioners of St. Josaphat's. I met with Nilda who is in charge of the pantry and her response was "Wow! Words can't express the feelings of gratitude which we feel about your parishioners. They truly reflect the power of love for others. Please thank everyone for their generosity. The funds will definitely be used to help many families who are in need." She then showed me the box holding the names of 400 families that they service - some monthly, some weekly. The homeless are not forgotten. Besides the daily food they receive, she had a bag for each of them containing a scarf, a hat, gloves and socks to help keep them warm this winter. RIGHT-TO-LIFE - The Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in the October Marian Flowers Campaign. We were able to send $300 to Helper's of God's Precious Infants and $200 to the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne who serve those dying of cancer with compassion and dignity and are with them until God calls them home. We also want to thank all those who gave to Sister Dorothy's Baby Showers. Sister was deeply moved by your generosity, She is an amazing woman, standing in all kinds of weather to speak to the women compassionately who want to get rid of their babies, urging them to keep them by promising her help. Please keep her in your prayers. St. Josaphat s CASINO TRIP, Yonkers, Jan. 23, Wednesday. Cost $25 get back $10 plus $5 in food. Please call Joy for reservations and info. 917 921 7631. Munera: Teach, Govern, and Sanctify. Laudetur Iesus Christus! When does Christmas end? We have completed the Octave of Christmas, December 25 January 1. December 25 January 6 gives us the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas. January 13 this year is the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord; this feast can fall on a Sunday or the Monday after Epiphany depending on the calendar and brings the major Christmas liturgical celebrations to an end in the Novus Ordo calendar. The old traditional calendar has a liturgical season of Sundays after Epiphany which comes to an end on February 2 the Feast of the Presentation thus making Christmas a forty-day season. Many European countries still hold on to this tradition. When St. John Paul II brought the Christmas tree and Nativity to St. Peter s Square he kept it up until February 2; Benedict XVI continued this custom too. So to sum it all up it seems like Christmas just fades away depending on custom and tradition. We will keep our Nativity up until February 2 and take it down after the blessing of candles on Candlemas Day The Presentation. With the celebration of Epiphany Three Kings Day starts the Carnival time of year, a time to celebrate make merry, visit friends and family, some countries have costume parties or fancy dress celebrations. All of these winter celebrations come to an end on Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras which brings us to Lent The Great Fast. We should celebrate for God has come to us in the flesh. This year we will enter into Lent on March 6 so we have a long Carnival season this year. Let us celebrate and be cheerful for God Is With Us! Here at St. Josaphat we will have a Mardi Gras Party before Lent please keep an eye open for more information to come. Blessed Epiphanytide, Rev. Fr. Stephen A. Saffron
