FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH PLANO, ILLINOIS The Anchor This year we start our Summer worship schedule on May 31 st. Since June 1 st is a Sunday, we will have worship on Saturday May 31 st at 5 p.m. and Sunday Morning at 9 a.m. This summer we will continue to have a contemporary service one weekend a month, a fully traditional service one weekend a month and the other weekends we will have a blend of both traditional and contemporary music. The Northern Illinois Synod Assembly will be held at Augustana College, Rock Island, June 13-14. Jim Porter, Diane Kupp and I will be voting members from First Lutheran. Please pray for the Holy Spirit s guidance for this gathering. The first of three Pancake Breakfasts planned by Lutheran Men in Mission for the summer will be held June 15 th. Dad will love having pancakes, sausage and more for his Fathers Day breakfast. The other two dates are tentatively set for July 13 th and August 17 th. Join us for great food and fellowship. After Saturday worship on June 21 you can head over to Plano High School for the Relay for Life and support Edie s Team First. This year s Relay for Life has been moved to Saturday evening to Sunday morning. Relay for Life is such a wonderful event of compassion and courage! Edie s Team First is such a vital group, and I am so proud and thrilled that Pastor s Corner they are part of First Lutheran. We will host a concert of contemporary Christian music at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 th. We hosted White Horse band from Earlville in April and had a great time and a wonderful turnout. Chris Schindler (the husband of Emily Albright Schindler) will be leading the band on June 28 th. Come out and have a great time! In mid-july some of our youth and adult sponsors will go on a Mission Trip to Missouri. Your support for the youth through bake sales, Lenten suppers and Easter breakfast help make this and so much more possible. Thank you all so much! Also in July, our Youth Director, Sarah Kuntzman will be accompanying two of our students to Confirmation Camp at Lutherdale Bible Camp in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Confirmation camp is a wonderful experience for our students and I am so glad that we help to make it possible for our youth to attend. Because Plano schools have made summer school an enrichment program attracting many students during the month of June, we have our Vacation Bible School July 28-August 1. The Methodist and Baptist congregations will be joining us and hopefully we will have a fourth congregation joining in also. Once again this year VBS will run from 9 a.m. until noon. Watch for more information. PAGE 4 VOLUME 27, ISSUE 6 Recipe Corner Jello Cake (One of Imogene Bohrer s favorite summer desserts) Ingredients: 1 Lemon Cake Mix 1 large package of lime Jello 1½ cups hot water 1 cup cold water 2 small packages of vanilla instant pudding 8 oz. Cool Whip 1 cup milk Instruc ons: Make cake as directed on box. Bake. Mix Jello while cake is in the oven. When cake is done, let cool 20 minutes. Poke holes in cake with fork and pour Jello over it. Mix pudding, Cool Whip & milk. Top cake with pudding mixture. Refrigerate over night. Quick Jam (Strawberry) (from Janelle Burd) Ingredients: 1 qt. whole strawberries 2 c. sugar Instruc ons: Cover 1 qt. strawberries with boiling water. Let stand 5 minutes. Drain in colander. Add 1 c. sugar; boil 5 minutes, then add 1 scant cup more of sugar & boil 10 minutes longer. Pour into glass pan and let stand overnight. Put in jars, seal and freeze. Delicious! Do you know of someone who would be comforted by a PRAYER SHAWL/LAP ROBE? Even though it is finally getting warmer, the nights can still be cool, and air conditioning can be too chilly for some. Please feel free to take one from the quilt rack at the back of the sanctuary. These beautiful items are made by members of First Lutheran Church. IMPORTANT: There is a correction/clarification to the Shrimp Salad recipe that appeared in the May Anchor. The shrimp used should be COOKED, peeled & deveined. JUNE/JULY LIBRARY NEWS There seems to be a great deal of interest in heaven these days as evidenced by recent books and movies. We have many books in our library on the subject, both fiction and non-fiction. Proof of Heaven by Mary Curren Hackett is a new novel about a young boy with a terminal illness. It explores the vision of heaven held by the various characters in the book. Each offers according to their beliefs. It is a story of love and life as well as the afterlife. Wonderful non-fiction book to read is Glimpses of Heaven by Trudy Harris, R.N. The author was a hospice nurse for many years. This book contains 40 true stories of life-end experiences. This book is inspiring and comforting to all, especially to those confronting a terminal illness or facing the death of a loved one. Enjoy the heavenly summer weather with a good book!!

New Prayer Chain Guidelines for Reques ng a Prayer be added to the Prayer Chain ANYONE may request a Prayer for ANYTHING they deem necessary or gives them cause for concern. Please call with the Church office at 630.552.8263 or the first person on the Prayer Chain. Please keep the prayer request as simple as possible: Name of person prayer requested for and reason. It is not necessary to go into a detailed message. God knows what is needed; we are simply the vessel to request His care. This will also help to keep the prayer request accurate as it passes down the list to members of the Prayer Partners. There no longer is a Day and Night Chain (one chain only). Calls can be made between 8:30am 8:30pm. Note those listed in italics 1 they have the capability to receive text messages, and they have requested to be part of the chain in this manner. PAGE 14 VOLUME 27, ISSUE 6 FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH MEETING SCHEDULE Formula for a Strong Nation I know three things must always be To keep our nation strong and free. One is a hearthstone bright and dear With busy, happy loved ones near. One is a ready heart and hand To love and serve and keep the land. One is a worn and beaten way To where people go to pray. So long as these are kept alive Nation and people will survive. God keep them always everywhere The home, the heart, the place of prayer.
