3. Discussion Questions 1) In Exodus 13:20-22, we read about the Lord going before the Children of Israel by Day in a pillar of Cloud and by night in a Pillar of Fire. a) How would you have responded if God was before you, guiding you in a pillar of smoke or fire? b) Do you think that God guides his people today in such a remarkable way? (Ps 23:3, Ps 31:3, Ps 48:14, Prov 4:11, Is 49:10, Jn 16:13) c) Verse 22 is very cool, He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people. 1) What is the significance of this for you today? 2) Do you agree with the following statement, Whatever you decide to do (read Bible more, pray more, step out in faith), the enemy, your friends, etc. are going to try to stop you. a) Consider Job and then answer this question b) Have you personally experienced this? How did it work out? c) Have you ever failed? 1) What happened as a result of your failure? 3) Read Exodus 14:5-9, and consider the following: Pharaoh had 600 chariots - Chariots had a HUGE advantage over normal foot solders. The Israelites were closed in from Pharaohs perspective Pharaoh was driven by his hardened heart a) What is pursuing you right now? (Drugs, alcohol, other sins?) b) Consider the enormity of seeing Pharaoh and his solders closing in on you with no apparent way out What is your response? What can we learn from the Israelites experience in that same situation? c) How does this change your perspective on obstacles, or attack? 4) In Exodus 14:11, we read that the Israelites were so afraid that they cried out to Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? a) What step of faith has God called you to take? b) Discuss the concept of resisting fearing back. 1) This is when we allow fear to cause us to go back to where we have come from. c) How has the enemy lied to you in this process? 1) You are going to die! - Are you dead yet? 2) You will be homeless! - Are you homeless 3) You will be a HUGE failure! - Are you a failure? What really will happen if you fail? d) What are Gods promises? (Num 14:40, Dt 1:11, Dt 8:1, 1 Sam 2:30, Ps 145:13, Lk 24:49, 2 Corinthians 1:20, 2 Pet 1:4, 1 Jn 2:25) e) How do these promises align with the promises that God gave you, that caused you to step out in faith? 5) Exodus 14:13-14 is an example of faith forward. a) Discuss the following statement, Fear makes you want to be less aggressive in following your dream, or even to dream less. 1) Read 1 John 4:8, and apply that scripture to this statement. Small Group Questions Page 4 of 5

b) In verse 14, we read that The Lord will fight for you. 1) Who will be able to stand against the Lord? 2) Is there anything the Lord cannot do? 6) In Exodus 14:15, we read that the Israelites are to stop crying and walk. a) What would they be crying about after watching God deliver them from so much? b) How is it possible that they would have forgotten all that God has done? (Ps 106:7) 1) Have you forgotten what God has done for you? (1 Chronicles 16:12, Ps 77:11,) 2) Why is it so important to remember the incredible things that God has done in our lives?
