The Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 07, 2018 From the Pastor Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York Grant, we pray, O merciful God, a share in eternal happiness to the soul of Harry, your servant and deacon, on whom you bestowed the gift of ministering in your Church. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Today the parish remembers the life and ministry of Deacon Harry A. Svebel who served the parish of St. Luke for over 30 years as a deacon having been ordained on December 3, 1977. A major function of a deacon is the proclamation of the GOOD NEWS of Jesus Christ. A deacon fulfills this important ministry by service to the needs of the faithful, especially the poor, the sick and all who are suffering and by a liturgical ministry, especially the reading of the Holy Gospel at Mass. Today the 11:45am Mass will be celebrated for Deacon Harry as we approach the 4th Anniversary of his death. We give thanks to God for the generous service of Deacon Harry - for his love of people and the Church, especially the parishioners of St. Luke. In Deacon Harry s memory and in gratitude for his countless acts of love and dedication we will bless a Book of the Gospels which contains readings from the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Crafted for our parish by Brother Terence McGrath, a Trappist monk of St. Joseph s Abbey, Spence, Massachusetts (the same monk who did the Crucifix over the Church Altar) assisted by Janine Manheim, a local iconographer. The book shows icons: on the front cover an icon of Christ and on the back cover, icons of symbols that represent the four evangelists: - St. Matthew: The winged man, the Incarnation - St. Mark: A winged Lion, the Resurrection - St. Luke: A winged Ox, the Passion - St. John: The eagle, the Ascension As we bless this Gospel Book for sacred worship, let us pray for the grace to be of service ourselves - to proclaim in word and deed our salvation in Christ.. May we be a living word known for our dedication to Jesus and His Church. God bless you. Let us pray for one another, 1

From the School.. 6th Grade TAC uses Google Apps to Graph! The 6th grade has been hard at work in Mrs. Bennett s TAC (Technology Across the Curriculum) class! They ve been using both their technology and Math skills in order to gather data and create graphs. They used Google Forms to survey their friends about a topic of their choice, such as their favorite food or season. Then, they used Google Sheets to create a bar graph of the data they gathered. Finally, they answered questions about their graphs in a Google Form that Mrs. Bennett created. No paper was used at all! The 6th grade is now looking forward to using Google Forms to create quizzes that grade! FALL LEAVES Nursery Students are water coloring their leaves to celebrate Fall. 9
