As we are preparing for our new photo directory and other parish initiatives, we learned that our parish records have not been updated for many years. I apologize for this negligence. As you may know, it is merely one of many areas that require our attention. In an effort to remedy the inaccuracies, I am initiating a Parish Census to update all of our parish family records. Please be attentive to upcoming notices about our Parish Census and how you all can participate. Please know that I am making every effort to rectify these problems. Thank you for your help. SAINT MARK PARISH MCKEESPORT, PA To live our Faith, we need to know our Faith! Year of Faith: 11 October 2012 to 24 November 2013 " They called the Church together and reported what GOD had done with them and how He had opened the door of faith..." (Acts of the Apostles 14:27). LENT Lent, a forty day season of conversion that begins on Ash Wednesday, is a time of turning toward God in preparation for Easter. We do this by praying, fasting, and giving alms. Anima sana in corpora sano A sound mind in a sound body: This interrelatedness of the physical and spiritual is at the heart of Catholicism s sacramental spirituality. As a sacramental people, our belief in the Incarnation brings a heightened awareness of the importance of our physical bodies with relation to spirituality. For this reason, Catholic spirituality involves our bodies. Psychologist Abraham Maslow s hierarchy of needs teaches that physiological needs must be tended to first before one can progress to paying attention to deeper needs such as self- actualization. This same wisdom is at the heart of the Catholic practice of fasting: the key to moving up the ladder of spiritual mastery begins at the physiological level. The way to the heart is indeed through one s stomach! Since biblical times, fasting and abstinence have been viewed as appropriate expressions of repentance for sin. Fasting is a very physical way to express the fact that our relationships with God and others need to be healed. Though fasting, Catholics learn to practice self-denial, to lead a life of moderation that deepens our compassion for people in need, and to develop a deeper hunger and thirst for God. Under current Canon Law in the Western Church, a day of fast is one in which Catholics who are eighteen to fifty nine years old are required to keep a limited fast. One single meatless meal along with two smaller meals an snacking is not allowed. Drinking coffee, tea, juices, etc. between meals is permitted on fast days. Abstinence, refraining from eating meat, is to align ourselves with the poor who cannot afford to provide meat for themselves and their families. Fasting and Abstinence remind us of our reliance on God, who is the source of all abundance and nourishment. The minimum that the Catholic Church expects is for us to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. But the entire forty day season of Lent is a good time to practice a limited form of fasting. Other forms of self denial can also be spiritually beneficial at any time. Everyone age fourteen and older is required to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. Paprocki - A Well Built Faith When the stomach is full it is easy to talk of fasting.-saint Jerome ACT of CONTRITION O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because of Thy just punishment, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. AMEN.
