THE STAR Rooted SEPTEMBER 2016 in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church Elmhurst, Illinois R A L L Y D A Y! September is here and so is Sunday School! Our first Sunday School class for the school year will be on Rally Day, September 11, 2016. Sunday School is available to children Pre-K (aged 3 years) through 6th grade. Sunday School Registration forms are hanging on the bulletin board in the Welcome Center at the Church Entrance, and will be available through the month of September. They are bright orange, so you won t miss them. Feel free to register your child for Sunday School by filling out the form and returning it to the office at any time, up to and including the first few weeks of September. We can t wait to see you!

Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 2 Adult Bible Study Exodus: God to the Rescue. Beginning the week of September 12, Pastor Moser will begin a 7-session class on the story of the Exodus, which is one of the most important stories of our faith, and a story that we will be reading in worship for a few weeks in October. As with last semester, we plan to offer an evening study (Mondays at 7:00 p.m.) and a daytime study (Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m.) We need a minimum of five people signed up to hold a session of the class. If you are interested, sign up at the Welcome Center in the church entrance, or call the church office (630) 832-8457. Small Group Leaders Needed Confirmation has shifted from Sunday/Monday classes to Wednesday nights. The Pastors will teach all students together, and then students will break into smaller groups for a half-hour discussion. Would you be interested in being a small group leader for confirmation this year? If so, please contact Pastor Moser for more information at (630) 832-8457 or Jennifer.Moser@EpiphanyElmhurst.org Check it Out! With Uriah out of the way, David would be free to claim Bathsheba... and the unborn child. Bathsheba s story in the Bible is about half a page, and it omits both her thoughts and her feelings. Angela Hunt has added details to form a full novel told primarily from the beauty s point of view. If you think Bathsheba was an innocent pawn in a man s realm, this is your girl; if you think she was a scheming temptress with designs on the throne, be ready to be convinced otherwise. Maybe it didn t happen this way, but it could have. Bathsheba: Reluctant Beauty is a steamy romance set in Biblical surroundings; this paperback is for the entertainment of matrons. Elie Wiesel s biography for junior readers can also be checked out for FREE! --Assistant Librarian Teri

Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 4 Praying For Our Children Calling all Moms, Grandmothers, Godmothers, Stepmothers, Aunts, Neighbors, Friends, etc. We worry about our children all the time... why not reduce our worry and lift them up in prayer? I have been working on my own prayer life and most of it is centered around my children. I felt called to help others lift the children in their lives in prayer as well. Starting on September 15, we will meet Thursday mornings from 8:20-8:50 a.m. in the sanctuary. We will use the book Praying the Scriptures for your Children, by Jodie Berndt as a reference for our weekly prayer theme and for scriptures to pray for our children. Themes include health and safety, relationships, spiritual gifts, patience, discernment, emotional well being, and more. This prayer group is open to the entire community, not just Epiphany Members. If you are interested, please contact Amy Wilson at amykwil33@comcast.net or(312) 933-3989. The nursery will be staffed to provide complimentary services for those with babies, preschoolers, or p.m. Kindergarteners. Thank you! Amy Wilson Pictorial Directories The new pictorial directories are here and available for you to pick up. Those who participated in the photo sessions have directories with their names printed on the back cover of the directory. They are grouped in alphabetical order on a table in Epiphany Center by last name for easy retrieval. Those members who didn t have an updated photo taken but would still find a new directory useful may take one from the stack that aren t labeled. To ensure everyone receives a directory, limit one per family please.

Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 6 August 15, 2016 Grace and Wilbur Lippert c/o Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church 314 W. Vallette Elmhurst, IL 60126 Dear Grace, Wilbur, and Members of the Congregation: The amount of school supplies you collected this year was really amazing! All the school social workers in District 205 have been notified and sent a list of all the various materials, and we have been sending them the items they requested. These items will go to the students in the district who are unable to purchase them for themselves. It was very fortunate to have these supplies available even before the first days of school so many children could start the year off with all the materials they needed. The Elmhurst Walk-In-Assistance Network greatly appreciates your generosity and willingness to help the students in the Elmhurst Public Schools. Thank you once again for your assistance. Sincerely, Mary Jo Corbett School Supply Coordinator

Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 8 About Our Members This summer Roy Schroeder, Sr. had the good fortune of participating in the Freedom Honor Flight. Freedom Honor Flight was founded in April of 2008 to fly our veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials that stand in their honor. The trip is all in one day, spending several hours at the World War II Memorial, and visiting other Washington D.C. landmarks such as the Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Wall, Lincoln Memorial, the Marine Corps War Memorial and others as time permits. Roy had many will wishers from Epiphany cheering him on at the airport.

Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 9 About Our Members Congratulations to York sophomore and Epiphany s own Sarah May for taking third at the New Balance Nationals outdoor track and field meet in Greensboro, North Carolina in June. May ran a 5:06.60 mile, besting 35 other runners. She also won the girls high school elite mile at the Magis Miles event at Saint Ignatius in Chicago, and placed third at the U.S. Army Midwest District Classic at Benedictine University In Lisle. Sarah s brother, Jon, will run for Bradley in Peoria beginning this fall, and her brother, Chris, earned All-American status at Grand Valley State University in Michigan this past school year. I m really proud of what my brothers have done, said May. They always give me advice, even if I don t ask for it. Congratulations, Sarah. We are all really proud of you, too! Sincerely, The Kimble Family A Message From The Mays Dear Epiphany Family, We apologize for not providing more frequent updates. We only recently shared with the kids that Darryl s myeloma has returned. We had held the news for a while so they could focus on all the great things that have been going on in their lives. While Darryl continues in triple chemotherapy and now has daily radiation treatments, we are hopeful to still achieve remission so he can build the strength he needs to once again rejoin everyone on Sunday mornings. Despite everything, we have been blessed in so many ways! Thank you all for your continued support and prayers. The May Family Gifts of the Heart A heartfelt thank you to the 17 people who donated blood at the Heartland Blood Center s collection at Epiphany on August 7. Being able to give the gift of life is truly a blessing for the donors as well as the recipients who receive life and hope. THANK YOU for your generous gift, and God bless!
