MATTHEW KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL # 11226 GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE JUNE 2018 My Brother Knights, We have a lot happening in June. We will be having our elections for new Officer Positions. Please pray for your Brothers that have accepted the challenge to help lead us forward. The retiring Officers, I thank you for all that you have done for our Council. Please be mentors to the newbies. I know they would welcome the help and suggestions. If you missed our Recognition Dinner, we had a great turnout. As I mentioned at the dinner, I wish everyone could have been recognized. You all have added so much to the growth of our Council. Brother Bob Smith did not receive any recognition, but he took pictures of the members, put them in a directory and passed the directory out to everyone. He also had to print all the certificates that were passed out at the dinner. He has also been a mentor for me as we have progressed during the year. Brothers Ray Kerker and Dennis Hamel were responsible for having our speakers at the meetings. They also helped coordinate all the socials we had this year. They were not formally recognized but have added so much to the Council. Just like many of you that have helped out with the Church, Pancake Breakfasts, recruitment and other functions we had this year. We had a record breaking year for 4 th Degrees. We had a District Deputy Bob Gibbia that attended our meetings, Officer Meetings and our Socials. Our Knight of the Year was Brother Bob Safransky. He has been the Recorder who was present at most, if not all our functions. He was taking pictures, putting together this newsletter and keeping the Brothers updated on the happenings of our Council. Our Family of the Year was Brother Bob Lord and his wife Joanne for all they did for our Council this year. As I stated earlier, so many Brothers have helped throughout the year, they all should be recognized. Please accept my personal thanks and a huge THANK YOU for all the Brothers that have made our Council so successful. Officer Elections will take place at our June 4 th General Council meeting. Please make every effort to attend the meeting to vote for your Officers. I am honored that you have nominated me for the third and last time. This weekend Brother Mike Harris and I will be going to the State Convention in Orlando. I will fill you in at our June 4 meeting. Please remember in your prayers our sick and disabled Brothers and their loved ones. Please remember our Lady and pray the Rosary daily for our Country, Parish, our Council and our other Brother Knights of Columbus. Again, THANK YOU ALL for the good that you do for our Parish, our Community and your fellow Brothers. Your Brother in Christ, GK SK Jack Hughes

"The Grunt Padre" by Fr. Daniel L. Mode; the story of Fr. Vincent Capodanno. Taken from the forward to the book. "The Grunt Padre is the story of Father Vincent Capodanno, a Maryknoll missionary, who left his small Taiwanese parish to support the fine men and women of the United States Marine Corps where they faced the threat of death on the most forward edge of the firing lines in a distant Asian country called South Vietnam. That is how I met and came to know Father Vince. Leaving Taiwan, Father Vincent became a Navy chaplain and ultimately was assigned to a United States Marine Corps Infantry Regiment. As a chaplain, a man of God, he had no command authority like other officers. Yet he inspired a loyalty surpassing that of the fines officers because of the individual he was, because of the special love and kindness he offered us, and because of his willingness to share hardships of the most junior Marines. Father Vince became one of the most known and most respected men "in country." He became the "Grunt Padre" to the war fighters. Assigned to a regiment which spread over twenty-five miles, each day was a day of travel as the chaplain mad his weekly rounds to fifteen or twenty different companies. He quietly pursued his mission, caring for the spiritual needs of all Marines. He was ecumenical and accepted by all as their chaplain. The Marines knew which day was their day with Father Vincent and, like people waiting for the postman to bring a special letter, the Grunt Marines looked forward to seeing Father Vincent appear along the trail leading to their positions. Once there, Father Vincent made the rounds, talking with as many weary warriors as possible. Mass was held; general absolution was given to all. All faiths attended his services. Marines came in their battle gear; fresh from night patrols, postponing sleep, for Father Vincent was there to share a few moments with them. He listened to them, offering each infantryman individual care and attention. He understood them. As nightfall approached its grave dangers approached, Father Vincent quickly moved on to the next unit. This chaplain did not recoil from danger. As his Marines assembled for combat operations, he would be there. He crowded into any available helicopter space and flew into the "hot landing zones" to be available to Marines facing combat. Father Vince carried no rifle. He carried a cross - a man of peace carrying God's message to distant battlefields. During firefights, all the infantrymen watched over him, because they knew Father Vincent would otherwise move forward with complete disregard for his own life to render aid to any wounded or dying Marine. The unspoken word was "watch over our Padre." On September 4, 1967, Father Vincent Capodanno gallantly gave his life attempting to rescue a wounded corpsman. As an officer in his regiment, I can personally attest to the fact that the news of his death had a more devastating impact upon the morale of the whole 1st Marine Division than the loss of many other senior combat leaders. We loved the Padre who so loved us. As fate would have it, a young seminarian, Daniel Lawrence Mode, began a research paper on Father Vincent decades after the Grunt Padre's death. Later, as an ordained priest, Father Mode continued his research, interviewing nearly one hundred individuals to discover the whole story behind this man of God and his personal commitment to serve his Creator in any time or place. Father Mode's book is more than a story of a fallen hero; his writing builds a mosaic. His meticulous research and discoveries have enabled him to paint a picture of a special man before the colors of time begin to fade on Father Vincent's life, on his commitment to God, on his love for his fellow man, and on his unselfish sacrifices. The Grunt Padre reminds us that one man can make a difference in the lives of many. In completing this book, Father Mode offers a lasting contribution to the historic legacy of the Navy Chaplain Corps as well. His book is a wonderful read for men and women of all faiths and walks of life.colonel Gerald H. Turley, United State Marine Corps (Retired) (Thanks to Brother Dan Weise for sending this foreword to the book. He has read the book!)

Care Insurance Protect your assets. Get quality care. Prepare for the future. While life expectancies have been improving steadily, living longer may very well mean needing more care. Statistics show that nearly 70 percent of individuals over the age of 65 will require at least some type of long-term care services during their lifetime.* And those services are becoming more and more expensive. On average, nursing home care can cost upwards of $83,000 per year, while athome care can cost more than $60,000 per year.* Yet most regular health insurance plans or government assistance programs do not provide sufficient coverage for long-term care needs. Long-term care insurance from the Knights of Columbus helps mitigate that risk by helping you cover your costs. Knights of Columbus Long-Term Care policies are customizable to fit your needs, and come in two basic forms: comprehensive coverage, which covers you in a nursing home or at home; and facility-only coverage, which covers you in a nursing home only. Call me today, and we can discuss further! Vivat Jesus,.
