FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January, 2015 INTERVIEWS: Tom Jensen 919-744-6312 IF YOU HAVE BASIC METHODOLOGICAL QUESTIONS, PLEASE E-MAIL information@publicpolicypolling.com, OR CONSULT THE FINAL PARAGRAPH OF THE PRESS RELEASE Pennsylvanians Like, But Don t Put Much Faith in Raleigh, N.C. With Groundhog Day on the horizon, PPP decided to take a look at how Pennsylvanians feel about. The verdict: they like the little guy, but they don't put too much stock in his weather predictions. 59% of Pennsylvanians have a favorable opinion of, to only 12% with a negative one. Affection for him bridges party lines- 61% of Democrats, 60% of independents, and 56% of Republicans view him positively. But only 8% think that whether he sees his shadow or not is actually a reliable indicator of how long winter will last, compared to 81% who think his prognostications can't be depended on. They may not trust as a weatherman, but Pennsylvanians think he'd be perfectly adept at another job: member of. 50% think he'd do a better job than most current members of, to only % that think he wouldn't. Those numbers are particularly dramatic among independents, where the spread is 57/16. Americans have so little faith in these days they d rather be represented by a groundhog, said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. Joe Paterno's image in the state has improved quite a bit over the last couple years. In July of 2012 Paterno's favorability had fallen all the way down to a /37 spread. Now with the passage of time he's back up to 54% who see him favorably to 26% with a negative opinion. Pennsylvania has always had some of the most one sided college sports loyalties of any state and we continue to find that the case- 47% are Penn State fans to just 18% for Pitt and 11% for Temple. There's a big partisan divide on NFL loyalties in Pennsylvania. Overall Steelers fan outnumber Eagles fans 42/31, but the Eagles actually win out narrowly among Democrats (40/37) while the Steelers have a substantial advantage with Republicans (48/27). Eagles fans are happier with Chip Kelly (62/9 approval) than Steelers fans are with Mike Tomlin (50/24) approval, although both coaches retain majority support. PPP surveyed 1,042 registered voters from January 15 th to 18 th. The margin of error for the survey is +/- 3.0%. 80% of interviews for the poll were conducted over the phone with 20% interviewed over the internet to reach respondents who don t have landline telephones.
