Ascension and Pentecost: Shared Reading Teaching Options Summary Ascension and Pentecost describes the biblical accounts of Jesus Ascension into heaven and the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples on the Feast of Pentecost. This book can be used in conjunction with the stories in the book, A Journey to New Life, particularly the selection Pentecost People. For emergent readers, point to the words as you read so that students can follow along, and invite them to join in when they are ready. Question, comment, or clarify as necessary to help students comprehend the content. Pause at challenging words to explore their meaning. Discuss the difference between fiction and non-fiction. Explain that the author did not make up the stories. The author is retelling stories from the Bible. Draw students attention to the Scripture References on page 12. Explain that these references are the source of information for the text. After studying each selection in the big book, older students may wish to read the references and compare the text in the big book to the text in the Bible. Discuss with the students the differences in the language used in both selections. Refer older students to the publication information on page 2 particularly noting the copyright information and the ISBN since these will be part of most texts students read. Discuss the meaning of Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur (official declaration that a book is free of doctrinal or moral error). The front cover has a symbol that states To Know, Worship and Love. Ask students what they think it means. Ask: Why is the symbol of a shaft of wheat used? (Like wheat, seeds can grow and be made into many kinds of food. In the same way, God wants us to grow in our knowledge, love and service to Him.) Note: Adapt the instruction and activities suggested to suit the needs of your students. Remind them that Jesus is not in the picture. Recall what Jesus said would happen when the Holy Spirit came. (They would be able to do all He asked them to do.) Explain that a flame is sometimes used as a symbol for the Holy Spirit. What are some other symbols of the Holy Spirit? (Dove, wind.) Revisiting the Text Comprehension Strategies All levels Inferring Consider reasons why the disciples were always together after Jesus Death and Resurrection. Word Work Emergent Make a list of some nouns in the selection and have students separate the singular and plural. Early Have students brainstorm a list of words that identify emotions, and add these words to the illustrations of people depicting that emotion. Have students raise their hand when they hear a past tense verb. Have students listen for pairs of rhyming words or describing words. Have students identify the words and phrases that describe emotions. Have them add additional words and phrases that describe how people feel in different situations. Do an I Spy game for long vowel words. Have students look for adjectives or adverbs. Make a list of action verbs. Have students take turns acting them out, while other students try and guess the verb. Use a Think Aloud strategy to draw students attention to the expressions on the faces of the people. Make a list of some nouns in the selection and have students separate them into common and proper categories. Ask the students if there are any other ways to separate the nouns. Have the students write a statement on how to separate nouns. Reading and Writing Connections Emergent Draw attention to capitalization on page 8. Ask students why writer used capitals in this way. (To emphasize passage.) Early Have students create a dialogue that may have taken place between Jesus and His disciples on Ascension Thursday. Write a description of events as if they were there and saw what happened. Have students write a journal entry as one of the apostles to record their thoughts when Jesus ascended into heaven. Extensions All levels Have students suggest words to be added to the word wall. Picture-walk through the book and have students retell events in their own words. Have students recount the events from the timeline that was created. Reread the selection, having students fill in familiar words and phrases, such as Holy Spirit. Recall the events of Pentecost. Have students create a booklet depicting the disciples on and after the Feast of Pentecost. Use words from the word wall to create captions. Have students write a journal entry as one of the apostles to record their thoughts when Jesus ascended to Heaven. Write a dialogue of a conversation that the apostles may have had with each other before and after Jesus ascended into Heaven. The flame is sometimes used as a symbol to depict the Holy Spirit.
