Last Sunday afternoon, we knew we had been visited by the Lord! The music ministry from Saint Stephen Cathedral, combined with folks from St. Thomas More, Paducah, and Holy Spirit, Bowling Green, under the direction of Michael Bogdan was a joyful sound to the Lord! Thanks to Michael Bogdan and the 68- member choir for sharing their time and talent in lifting up our hearts in prayer! I was especially moved by the newly released hymn by Rory Cooney, To You Who Bows! Good music teaches good theology! Thanks to Margaret Mills, Sharlene Hatfield, Dove Haire, Mary Jo Yates, John and Patsy Clayton, and Benny Blandford for stuffing the liturgical programs; to Mary Bryant Booth, Jeff and Edna Murphey, and their Team of Diocesan Event Welcomers: Judy and Steve Carrico, Brenda Clark, Ruby Jacildo, Joan Perry, and Florence Weider: Grazie tante! Kudos to the hospitable, generous, funny and feisty, thoughtful, joyful Fr. Suneesh Mathew for his supportive words! I am grateful to God for the gift of priesthood, and to all of you who were able to make the time to join in this Mass of Thanksgiving! After a wonderful liturgy, the celebration continued with a fantastic reception! Thanks to the Reception Committee under the capable coordination of Teresa Brown: Lauren Calhoun, Donna Duffy, Mary Riney, Janet Murphy, Lupe Ellis, and Fr. Suneesh Mathew. Many people were involved in this community effort: Agnes and Skip Reynolds crafted a beautiful scriptural cake; Lupe Ellis and Team Lupe : Theresa Ray, Garry and Ann Pierce, Monika Logan, Rosemary Payne, Kim Lewis, Martha House, Maggie Riney, Marianne Robinson, Mary Helen Nash, Doreen Harney, and Joann Moore coordinated the food. Terry Brown cooked eight delicious Boston butts; Donna and Jim Duffy decorated the hall very attractively; John Calhoun brought and set up a PA system; Lauren Calhoun produced a terrific, top-of-the-line slideshow, with Angela Clark s help in choosing pictures. Marianna Robinson called people to bring food. Thanks to all who brought food! It was a banquet to behold!! Toasts and roasts were given by my brother Ed Riney, Mark Heinz, Lori Lewis, Paul Ballard, Fr. John Vaughan, and Sr. Suzanne Sims, with Fr. Pat Reynolds as the standup comedian emcee! Parish Pastoral Council Chair, Christy Ellis, presented me, on behalf of SSC faith community, with a handsome check, for which I am greatly and humbly appreciative! Further thanks to Pat and Waitman Taylor, Paddy Settles, Margie and Jeff Ebelhar, Ruth and Pat Mysinger, Lottie Miller, Haley and Matt Fitzgerald, Ron Bornander, John McNulty, Bo Ivey, Gene and Larry Lyon, Deacon Dirck and Chona Curry, Donna Murphy, Joey Beatty, Ruth Ann Carrico, and Eddie O Bryan. A double thanks to all who helped cleanup! Thanks to all, also, for your cards, gifts, prayers, presence, and many expressions of congratulations as I celebrated 40 years of priesthood. How can I make a return to the Lord for all the good he has done for me? (Psalm 116:12). II. Our Cathedral Preschool Open House: There is excitement in the air as we begin another year at our Cathedral Preschool! We had a special School Blessing with our competent, friendly staff last Friday. On Monday, August 17, we will meet with parents of our three-year-olds at 6:00PM and parents of our four-year-olds at 7:15PM in the Community Center. We will meet with parents of our five-year-olds on Tuesday, August 18, at 7:15PM in the five-year-old classroom. An Open House will be hosted on Wednesday, August 19, and again on the morning of Thursday, August 20! Everyone is welcome! III. SSC Picnic, Saturday, September 19: It s less than five weeks before our opportunity to build community as well as make a little money for the parish is upon us! The best way to ensure our picnic will be a success is to pick up your raffle tickets and sell them! We appreciate your efforts and enthusiasm to make our picnic a success and to continue to build community spirit! Furthermore, there are only about 175 Hawaii raffle tickets left. If you would like to help out with the picnic do not hesitate to call the office, leaving your name and telephone number! In Joy and Hope, Fr. Jerry

Have you ever asked yourself the following questions? How is the Catholic Christian faith different from other Christian religions? Will being a Catholic help me develop and strengthen my relationship with God? Will the teachings of Jesus enhance the fullness of life for me that is promised in the Scriptures? Will being a member of the Catholic Church make a difference in my life? If you have asked yourself any of these questions, the RCIA process will help you. Life is a journey where a person is constantly learning, growing, and changing. This process is a step in that journey and lays the ground work, through information and experiences, in helping you decide if you want to be a Catholic. It provides the opportunity to ask questions, pray, and experience what is meant by being a Catholic Christian and entering into a relationship with God and the Catholic community. We meet on Wednesdays at 6:00PM in the parish Media Center. Come and explore Catholicism with us! For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270-852-8424. MEN, MARK YOUR CALENDARS That Man is You! begins Thursday, September 10, 6:00-7:30AM in the Father John Vaughan Community Center. Modeled on some of the country s leading men s programs, That Man is You! combines Scripture, solid secular research and a little fun to address the pressures and temptations facing men in our modern culture. It seeks to form authentic leaders capable of transforming homes and society. To preregister, please contact Tom Payne at tom.payne@daviess.kyschools.us. WORD OF LIFE For humans to cause species to become extinct and to destroy the biological diversity of God's creation... For humans to degrade the integrity of Earth by causing changes in its climate, by stripping the Earth of its natural forests, or destroying its wetlands... for humans to injure other humans with disease... for humans to contaminate the Earth s waters, its land, its air, and its life, with poisonous substances... these are sins. Courtesy of V.I.S. - Vatican Information Service FAITH FORMATION CLASSES BEGIN THIS WEEKEND All Cathedral children not enrolled in the Catholic schools will resume Faith Formation classes this Sunday, August 16. All children in the parish are welcome and are invited to join us for Faith Formation. Contact Donna Murphy for registration information, 270-852-8424. We thank those who are sharing their gifts of faith as Catechists this year. CATHEDRAL PRESCHOOL Cathedral Preschool requests a donation of two (2) University of Kentucky SEC home basketball game tickets (game of your choice) for their Annual Raffle. The first, second and third prizes will be two (2) tickets to three University of Kentucky SEC basketball games in Rupp Arena. Tickets to other college athletic events are also requested for the Raffle. Your donation will help offset the $20,000 replacement cost for the playground equipment, fencing and ground cover which, for the safety of our 3, 4 and 5 year-olds, need to be replaced. The original playground was installed when the Preschool was established in 1986. We appreciate your support. Call Larry Lyon, 270-316-4028. PLAYGROUND UPDATE Thank you to all who attended our Pancake Breakfast. Thank you, also, to those who have made donations. We have now raised about $3,000. We need approximately $20,000. We have a long way to go; your donations and prayers are very much appreciated. LOVE THEM BOTH We must love them both those whose opinions we share and those whose opinions we reject. For both have labored in the search for truth, and both have helped us in the finding of it. St. Thomas Aquinas PARISH RAFFLE TICKETS Raffle tickets for our 12 th Annual Picnic, September 19, are available at each exit door. This year s Raffle includes $4600 in cash prizes. We appreciate your efforts to make our picnic a success and to continue the spirit of community at St. Stephen Cathedral. We must learn to admit our mistakes, be smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them. All the youth will gather this Sunday, August 16, at 1:00PM in the Youth House. In our prayers let us not fail to address her with trust. Mary will not fail to intercede for us with her Son. Let us learn how to live from Mary. Mary is the Queen of Heaven who is close to God, but she is also the Mother who is close to each one of us, who loves us and listens to our voice. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

What kind of love would not feel the need to speak of the beloved, to point him out, to make him known? If we do not feel an intense desire to share this love, we need to pray insistently that he will once more touch our hearts. We need to implore his grace daily, asking him to open our cold hearts and shake up our lukewarm and superficial existence. Standing before him with open hearts, letting him look at us, we see that gaze of love which Nathaniel glimpsed on the day when Jesus said to him: I saw you under the fig tree (Jn 1:48). How good it is to stand before a crucifix, or on our knees before the Blessed Sacrament, and simply to be in his presence! How much good it does us when he once more touches our lives and impels us to share his new life! What then happens is that we speak of what we have seen and heard (1 Jn 1:3). The best incentive for sharing the Gospel comes from contemplating it with love, lingering over its pages and reading it with the heart. If we approach it in this way, its beauty will amaze and constantly excite us. Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium November 24, 2013 Courtesy of V.I.S. - Vatican Information Service A VOCATION VISTA We were created with a vocation to work. The goal should not be that technological progress increasingly replace human work, for this would be detrimental to humanity. Work is a necessity, part of the meaning of life on this earth, a path to growth, human development and personal fulfilment. Helping the poor financially must always be a provisional solution in the face of pressing needs. The broader objective should always be to allow them a dignified life through work. To stop investing in people, in order to gain greater short-term financial gain, is bad business for society. STAR OF HOPE Mary, glorified in her body, appears today as the star of hope for the Church and for humanity on its way towards the third Christian millennium. Her sublime exaltation does not distance her from her people or from the world s problems, on the contrary, it enables her to watch effectively over human affairs with that attentive concern with which she obtained the first miracle from Jesus at the wedding in Cana. St. John Paul II Visit our local Catholic Radio, 107.9FM, www.saviorradio.net or owensborocatholicradio.com. Tune in week nights at 8:30PM to say the Rosary with Bishop Medley and OCS Students. 5. About the Mass Posture Standing is about respect, about attention, about readiness. For us, it is the basic posture, the normal posture at liturgy. Anything else is a temporary departure, a little sitting, a little kneeling; then we get back to our basic stance. If we sit down during the liturgy, it is usually to allow us to listen more attentively or to reflect in silence without the distraction of bearing all our weight on two feet. Sitting is good for those tasks, but it has major drawbacks in that we can let it become the posture of an audience, and that is what we are not. Likewise, the kneeling posture for us has associations with repentance and with penance, with an attitude that expresses adoration, and sometimes simply with the posture an individual wants to take in moments of private prayer. For most of the history of the Church, the people didn t sit down pews were only widely used after the Reformation. And kneeling was done at liturgy itself only at rare moments. Now we can say that sitting and kneeling are part of how Catholic communities in this society do the liturgy, each has a certain limited place. But still, it should feel to us as Catholics that when we come together to do the liturgy, we do it on our feet. Gabe Huck, 1992, Archdiocese of Chicago. Our Bodies Join in Praise Mass is more than words: Our whole body is involved in our greatest act of praise and thanks to God. We stand, we sit, we bow, we kneel, we raise our hands to heaven, we process, we cup one hand with the other to receive a morsel of bread--the Body of Christ; we take hold of a cup to drink--the Blood of Christ. Why? Standing is a sign of respect: we stand when someone important enters the room, or when we meet a person. So it s natural that we stand to show respect for the gathered assembly or the gospel. We stand to show respect when we ask God for the needs of the world and Church in the prayers of the faithful, and we stand ready to be part of God s answer to those prayers. We stand to eat and drink the Eucharist because we are pilgrims on the road to the Promised Land, taking nourishment on the way. Similarly we sit in order to listen better. And we kneel because kneeling is what a servant does, and we are God s servants. Posture is an important part of our prayer as Catholics. Let s stand, sit and kneel with care. David Philippart, 1993, Archdiocese of Chicago. For Reflection 1. What do the various postures at liturgy communicate about the different parts of the Mass? 2. How are the postures at liturgy a kind of rehearsal for how we live all week long?
