Ridge Street * Marquette * Michigan 49855 * (906) 226-2912 For over 25 years, Nancy Royce Railey has been performing and teaching in the Marquette area. She received her music education from the Eastman School of Music, the American Conservatory, and Indiana University School of Music, and she has been on the faculties of Kent State University, the Wisconsin Conservatory, and the College of St. Scholastica, where she was Artist-in-Residence. Ms. Railey has given recitals in parts of the USA and in Germany. She has performed as soloist with the following orchestras: American Conservatory (Chicago), Keweenaw Symphony, and Marquette Symphony. She is a founder of the Lake Superior Piano Workshop and is active in the Marquette Area Piano Teachers Association. She teaches privately in her home studio. Ms. Railey has spent much of her career in recent years striving to help keep classical piano music alive in this area through her performances and lecture recitals. She is encouraged and assisted in these endeavors by her husband Bob. Her life is enriched by her two children and five grandchildren, one of whom is studying piano seriously so she can take over when her grandmother retires. Pianist Nancy Railey and Violinist Connie Weiner will perform a concert on Saturday, May 19th as part of the "St. Paul's Celebrates the Arts" series which features local visual and performing artists. Connie Weiner received her B.A. in Music Education as a Strings Specialist from Michigan State University. Always enriching her music education, she earned her Suzuki certification at the University; attended master classes at NMU with the late, renowned string pedagogue Dorothy Delay; and, recently, participated in a Julliard string symposium featuring Itzhak Perlman. For the past 33 years, Ms. Weiner has taught privately and established The Strings Studio where she currently teaches violin, viola, and cello. She works as an Orchestra Assistant in MAPS, coaching ensembles and assisting at concerts and various events. She has been a member of the Marquette Symphony Orchestra since its inception and has held the position of Principal Second Violin for several years. In 2010, Ms. Weiner was awarded the Marquette County Arts Award for Outstanding Arts Educator. Ms. Weiner has lived in Marquette since 1980 and raised her two daughters in this lovely community she calls home. The Saturday, May 19th concert will begin at 7:00 in St. Paul s Chapel. Lessons for Going Forth by Dennis West The Easter Season moves us into the time after the Resurrection when the disciples began to spread the Good News. A theme that is being used for the next few weeks of Christian education is what it is like to experience new people and cultures. As we know, the disciples moved south, north and soon Christian influences even reached the Far East. We are using this period to have our children hear and experience first hand what it is like to experience people who are new to you and of different background, culture and experiences and how the Gospel lessons help give you important lessons in going forth. On April 15th, they had a chance to Skype Sam West who is in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Sam shared his experiences that included some foods that you should ask the children about. On April 29th, they will Skype Anne West in Khon Kaen, Thailand. She will share her experiences in the Buddhist Water Festival. They will also explore African culture in early May. Spring into Summer Picnic by Sandy Purrington and Iris Erickson Peggy and Pete Frazier have once again graciously offered their lovely home for St. Paul's fourth annual Spring Into Summer picnic. Come for food, fun, and fellowship with our parish family after the service on Sunday, June 3, at their home on 460 East Ridge St. just a few blocks east of St. Paul's and overlooking the big lake (look for the balloons). This is a potluck event, so please bring your favorite dish to share as well as games that the children would enjoy. There will be a piñata for the children. Drinks will be provided. Diocesan Summer Camp 2012 by Mahlon Collins, Camp Director Camp Staff is pleased to announce Diocesan Summer Camp 2012. Camp takes place from June 17-23rd this year and we will be returning to the Clear Lake Education Center between Munising and Manistique on M-94 for another session of fellowship and fun for youth having completed grades 5-12. The Diocesan Youth website (http://youth.dioup.org ) has all the information and materials needed to register a camper. You can also register online through our secure site maintained by Digital Faith at http://camp.dioup.org. For those that have been to camp previously, expect the same great traditions you've come to love, like Capture the Flag, Barbarians, Spanish rice, Happening Songs, and more, plus plenty of new things to do and lots of surprises. For those who have never attended camp before, we offer a range of activities throughout the week that center around each Camp session's theme. The theme of this year's Camp is "Journey to the Promised Land" and we will have many activities dealing with the Israelites' journey from Mt. Sinai to the Promised Land. We also have canoeing, singing, time for individual reflection, low ropes activities, a Healing Service and Eucharist, swimming, learning sessions, campfires, fantastic home-cooked meals, and much more. From Bob Railey s Pen: Summer Quarter Schedule The usual sign-up display for July through September will be posted in the chapel hallway from May 13 through June 10. You may use the schedule to sign up for specific role(s) on specific dates. You may use the appropriate roster(s) to indicate when not to schedule you or to increase your list of liturgical roles. The quarterly schedule covers lectors, leaders of the prayers, chalice bearers, servers, ushers, coffee hour hosts, and coffee makers. Completed schedules will be distributed beginning June 17. June 9/10 a busy weekend On Saturday, June 9, we will host a diocesan celebration of Baptismal Life & Ministry as Cathy Clark will be commissioned as a missioner and ordained priest. Cathy was ordained deacon as a member of Grace, Ishpeming s MST. A few of us knew her as a participant in the MGH weekday communion ministry prior to her attending EDS in Cambridge (MA). After a lengthy search process by the Eastern region (now Huron district), Cathy was chosen to be their missioner; see the February 2012 Hiawathaland for her story. At our June 10 liturgy, we are expecting to have both baptism and reaffirmation of vows. Seasonal planning In preparation for the 2012-13 liturgical year, the seasonal planning sign-up display will be posted in the chapel hallway beginning May 13. The first close-date for signing up will be June 24 for the combined Advent-Christmas seasonal block. The display includes information about how seasonal planning is done at St. Paul s. Future seasonal close dates will be announced in Messenger and bulletins. The display will remain posted through late January (close date for the final season after Pentecost ). Treasurer s Update First Quarter, 2012 by Tony Pearson In light of our annual financial and budget review, the Finance Committee felt that a first quarter update would be in order. The following are some highlights. St. Paul s Trust Accounts are doing very well with an increase of 9%, from January through March. Although $4,000 has been withdrawn form the St. Paul s Trust, we are under budget by $2,249, and I do not think that there will be further withdrawals in April. We have received an additional pledge (after the annual meeting) of $1,500. Not unexpectedly, income is short of the budget by $6,000. I will continue to provide quarterly reviews. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contract me. Room at the Inn St. Paul s hosts Room at the Inn, the ecumenical program for Marquette County s homeless, beginning Sunday, May 20th to May 27 th. Welcome to Sharon Stenglein, and to Kristi and Claudia Nadeau by Sandy and Burt Purrington We at St. Paul's are happy to welcome three new members to our church family: Sharon Stenglein is a cradle Episcopalian who was born and grew up in Ishpeming. She and her husband, William, were married at St. James the Less ("Little Jimmie's") in Harvey 58 years ago and subsequently moved there. They have three sons and three grandchildren. One son lives with Sharon and William and works with his father on the farm; one lives and works on Kodiak Island, Alaska; and the third works at the prison outside Marquette. Sharon was a Title I teacher s aide in Chocolay County Schools for nine years, worked for five years at JoAnn's Fabrics when they first opened their doors in Marquette, and had a family daycare in her home for 25 years until she retired when she turned 70. She loves to cook. Sharon came to St. Paul's two years ago when Little Jimmie's closed its doors. She has joined the Pilgrims LifeCycles group and our team of volunteers at Room at the Inn and is active on the Outreach Committee and in many St. Paul's activities. Sharon greatly enjoys St. Paul's and the many new friends she has so easily made here. Here is our introduction to Kristi and Claudia Nadeau in Claudia's own words: Kristi Nadeau is a cradle Episcopalian from Munising, Michigan. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John s Munising, served on the Vestry several terms as secretary, has been a reader for Prayers of the People, has served as an acolyte, and helped with teaching Sunday School. In 2008 she moved to Destin, Florida with her mother Claudia and joined St. Andrew s by the Sea Episcopal Church. There she was active as a reader of Prayers of the People and as an important member of the team responsible for setting up and planning the monthly pot-lucks. She has never let the fact that she was born with Down Syndrome hold her back. Kristi graduated from Munising High School in 1994, and shortly after was recognized as an Exceptional Student of the Year by the Council for Exceptional Children. Kristi is enjoying being a member of St. Paul s and getting to know the welcoming family here. Although baptized as a Christian in the Lutheran Church, I (Claudia Cowell Nadeau) have always attended an Episcopal church. As a very young child I attended St. John s Munising with my grandparents, and was confirmed there by about age 10, and married there at age 19. I was active at St. John s Munising and on a Diocesan level before moving to Destin, Florida following the death of my husband Jerry. The time spent at St. Andrew s by the Sea in Destin was a wonderful healing experience the intentionally inclusive welcoming community of faith embraced us and the gifts we had to share. It is good to be back in the U.P., and I am the first to say, You can take the woman out of the U.P., but it is hard to take the U.P. out of the woman. The Diocese of Northern Michigan and its people are home. If you want to know more about me and my experiences, just ask I am willing to share my story and eager to hear your story. We are happy and grateful to have Sharon, Kristi and Claudia with us and we look forward to many good times ahead with them. St. Paul s Scrip Program We continue to reap rewards in the form of convenience for our parishioners and money for St. Paul s with our scrip program. Thanks to a few hardworking volunteers, we have managed to keep things going in Barb Carpenter s absence. To date the program has brought in a little over $4,500.00 for the church. If you don t know how the program works, it s easy. In essence you are buying gift cards. The church pays a little less than full value for them, depending on the percentage the business gives us. That small amount goes in the scrip account and keeps adding to our profits. If you have questions please see, Karan Hendricks, Ann Smith or Sandy Purrington. Join the in crowd of scrip users and help the church at the same time. Stop by the scrip table on a Sunday morning and see how to get started. We also have some cards on hand so if you need something immediately just ask, we may be able to help you.
To and Fro Northern Initiatives Celebrates 20 years and St. Paul s and the Episcopal Church are part of that History by Dennis West Northern Initiatives (NI) is a private non-profit corporation, Community Development Financial Institution and Microloan Development Organization that on April 16th, celebrated its twenty-year anniversary. NI was created through Northern Michigan University to build a more diverse and resilient rural economy. It has done its work by providing businesses and people who wish to start businesses with access to capital, information and markets. It began its work exclusively in the UP and now serves 46 Northern Michigan counties and five Wisconsin border counties. It has made over 600 loans, totaling over $35,000,000 with 30% of its loans going to start ups, and 40% to women-owned businesses. It has over $12,000,000 in assets, a staff of 14, and employs 8-11 Northern Michigan student workers. The Episcopal Church has been central to its launch and growth. Al Raymond, member of St. Paul s and former Senior Warden, was part of the faculty and administrative leadership that in 1985 set the course for what would become NI. The university under President Appleberry realized that at the time, two thirds of their students were coming from the UP, and unemployment was over 15%. There was a realization that the health and welfare of the University was inextricably linked to the health of the UP economy. Al helped guide the early University initiatives and helped build a partnership with Wayne State University that resulted in an on-campus counselor for the Small Business Development Centers. After its incorporation, then Bishop Tom Ray, began serving on the Northern Initiatives Board. Tom served on the Board of Directors for over a decade. He helped Northern Initiatives gain a loan from the national church to have money from the Episcopal Church be used by NI to be able to make loans to small businesses in the UP. That $250,000 loan was repaid to the Episcopal church by NI with interest in 2010. Finally, for the last 15 years, Dennis West has been the President of Northern Initiatives. Dennis is the Senior Warden at St. Paul s. Ladies Luncheon We all (21 of us) had a wonderful time at Doncker s for April's Ladies' Luncheon, and decided to return again in the fall. We have decided to go to Vango's for our May 18 luncheon, 11:30 a.m. as usual. On June 15, we will travel to the home of Jim and Arlene Stone (thank you very much, Jim and Arlene) for a pot luck salad and dessert lunch. They live a few miles west of Shelter Bay. Please bring a favorite salad or dessert. It probably would be good to meet at St. Paul's at 11:00 a.m. and carpool from there. If you wish to drive on your own, we will e-mail detailed directions to the Stone's to you before June's luncheon.
