February 2-3, 2019 Jesus calms the storm. Mark 4:35-41 Jesus is powerful. First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids It s Super Bowl Weekend, which means lots of new kids AND new volunteers! Make sure to welcome every kid by name, and help new volunteers feel like part of the team. Next 5 minutes: Connect Time Next 25 minutes: Large Group Last 25 minutes: Snack and Small Group Ask kids, remind them to tell you today s main idea: JESUS IS POWERFUL! Today is all about how Jesus is powerful! Repeat this big idea multiple times, and focus on how Jesus showed his power by calming a whole storm!
GOAL: Connect time is all about engaging kids in a short, interactive game to prepare them for Large Group. Clean up! (10 minutes after the service start time, when you get the 5-minute warning from the presenter) Line kids up SAY: Jesus is powerful! Let s all say that together: Jesus is powerful! (Let kids respond.) Now let s do some motions to help us remember today s story: Jesus was riding in a boat with his friends (sit and pretend to rock back and forth in a boat) A big scary storm came (make big waves with your arms, and rock back and forth like the boat is tipping) Jesus told the storm Quiet! Be Still! and the storm STOPPED! (make a stop sign with your hand) Jesus could do it, because Jesus is powerful! (Show a strong pose) As you walk into Large Group, encourage kids to put on their listening ears! Remind them that HOPS will be showing us how we should act in Large Group, so we have to listen!
Are you losing kids interest? Do some quick stretches! There s never a bad time to have kids move their arms and legs and do something active to redirect their attention, and help them focus. WELCOME AND INTRO Main Goal: Review the beginning of God s story and rescue plan. Notes: Find today s video, Jesus Calms the Storm at crossroadskidsclub.net. *Click to play intro music. Say: Hi Friends! Welcome to Kids Club. I'm and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. Video: HOPS Obey your leaders Say: (Holding up the Bible.) This is God s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this is the most important. Do you know what it s called? (Let kids respond the Bible. ) That s right, the Bible! It s God s Rescue plan. It shows us how He rescued us from all the wrong things in the world. Say: In the beginning, God made the whole world and everything in it. He created the sun and the moon, the water and the land, the plants and the animals, and people like you and me! Everything was good. Give me a big thumbs up! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone.) Say: But THEN, something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and all the wrong things came into the world. Things like sadness and death. Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) Say: Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God loved them anyway! He planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve, and you and me, could be close to God again! Do you know who the Rescuer is? (Let kids say: Jesus!)
JESUS CALMS THE STORM JESUS IS POWERFUL Say: Today, we re going to learn how Jesus is powerful. Let s all say that together: Jesus is powerful! Let s all make a big, powerful strong pose! (Respond along with kids.) Say: One day, Jesus got on a boat with his friends and sailed out into the sea. Everything was nice and peaceful, like this: (Click to play the calm river loop.) It was so nice and sunny, that Jesus went to sleep! (Lie down on the stage and pretend to sleep. Act peaceful and contented.) While they were in the middle of the lake and Jesus was still asleep, a HUGE storm rolled in! (Click to play the rocky sea loop.) The seas got rocky. Rain started pattering. Can you guys patter your hands on your laps? (Let kids make sound effect). Wind started whooooshing! Keep pattering, but add some whoosh noises! (Let kids add sound effect). Say: Just imagine how scared Jesus friends must have felt! If you were on those waters, in a tiny boat, and a storm that loud was echoing all around, would YOU feel scared? (Let kids respond.) Me too! Say: Let s watch a video, and see what happens next! As you watch, see how Jesus shows that he is powerful. Video: Jesus Calms the Storm Ask: So who stopped that storm? (Let kids respond.) Yep: JESUS! He is so powerful, that he can just tell a storm to stop...and it stops! Say: The disciples didn t have to be afraid, because Jesus is powerful enough to do anything. He is more powerful than storms, and he s also more powerful than any other thing that scares us! Let s all say this together: Jesus is powerful! Let s all make a big, powerful strong pose! (Respond along with kids.) Say: When we re afraid, or sad, we can ask Jesus to help us! We can talk to him, and ask him to be powerful. In fact, let s do that right now! Pray (Breaking it into small, repeatable phrases): Dear God. Thank you for being powerful. Thank you for helping us when we re scared. Aaa-men!
WRAP UP AND WORSHIP Set up worship: Let s show Jesus how glad we are that he loves us. Everybody stand up and sing as loud as you can! Music Video: Be Strong Music Video: Wiggle Worm Music Video: Wonderful Things
Goal: Goal: Kids will (1) retell the story of Jesus calming the storm and (2) understand how we can trust Jesus instead of being afraid! Why? We want kids to believe wholeheartedly that Jesus is powerful to do ANYTHING! Tip: Preschoolers have very short attention spans, so do your best to redirect their attention every few minutes or so. REVIEW THE STORY 1. In today s story, why did Jesus friends get scared? (they were on a boat and a huge storm came; Jesus was asleep) 2. When Jesus woke up and saw the storm, was he scared? (no way! He even asked them why they were scared) 3. What did Jesus do after his friends woke him up? (he stopped the storm just by telling it to stop!) 4. Is Jesus powerful? (YES!) Let s all say that together: Jesus is powerful! MAKE IT PERSONAL Let kids color a Jesus is powerful! sticker. As they do this, remind them of today s big idea, and have them shout it with you: Jesus is powerful! Next, play the "Quiet, Be Still!" game: Remind kids how Jesus stopped the scary storm just by saying Quiet! Be Still! Let kids run around, shout, sing and dance to some music until the leader stops the music, and says, "QUIET! BE STILL!" Everyone must "freeze" until the leader starts the music again, and then the kids can resume their singing or dancing until the leader stops the music again. Extra time? Have kids do a coloring sheet.
