These worksheets must be completed and turned in by Meeting #1 Due: December 12, 2018 Meeting #2 Due: January 16, 2019 Meeting #3 Due: February 6, 2019 Meeting #4 Due: February 27, 2019 *If you have any questions, please contact John Thoemke by calling 507-934-7945, or by emailing john.thoemke61@gmail.com. LEARNING ACTIVITY: The Seven Sacraments of the Church (see the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1210 1666) Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life. Sacraments of Christian Initiation: The sacraments of Christian initiation lay the foundations of every Christian life. 1. Baptism Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other Sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons and daughters of God. 2. Confirmation The reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For by the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. 3. The Eucharist The Holy Eucharist completes Christian initiation. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. Sacraments of Healing: The Lord Jesus Christ, physician of our souls and bodies has willed that His Church continue, in the power of the Holy Spirit, His work of healing and salvation, even among Her own members. 4. Reconciliation Those who approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation obtain pardon from God s mercy for the offense committed against Him. 5. The Anointing of the Sick By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that He may raise them up and save them. Sacraments of Service/Vocation: These Sacraments are directed towards the salvation of others; if they contribute as well to personal salvation, it is through service to others that they do so. They confer a particular mission in the Church and serve to build up the People of God. 6. Holy Orders Holy Orders is the Sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time. 7. Matrimony The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring.
