1013 Ellsworth Street Philadelphia PA 19147 June 28-29, 2014 First Reading: Corinthians 11:21-30 A reading from First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Your blessing father Brothers and Sisters: For when the time comes to eat, each of you goes ahead with your own supper, and one goes hungry and another becomes drunk. What! Do you not have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you show contempt for the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I commend you? In this matter I do not commend you! For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For all who eat and drink without discerning the body, eat and drink judgment against themselves. For this reason many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. Praise be to God always.

And they said, Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered him, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. This is the truth. Peace be with you.

1013 Ellsworth Street Philadelphia PA 19147 June 28-29, 2014 FOURTH SUNDAY OF PENTECOST Today the Church is born! With the feast day of SS. Peter and Paul upon us we give thanks to Jesus Christ for giving us His Church. What is the Church and what does it mean for each of us? This community is very blessed because of our unique congregation and the make-up of our community. Yes it is true that our father St. Maron began the Maronite Church in mountains of Lebanon, however, the Maronite Church is not limited to those who come from Lebanon. It is open to all Catholic and Orthodox faithful who find the beauty and spiritual comfort of the Maronite Church. Our community is built on different nationalities and backgrounds. It is open to anyone who sees the universal Church as it should be seen as a place where the faithful come together to worship the Holy Trinity and to pray for each other. It is a place where everyone should gather in peace and harmony working for one common goal building our relationship with Jesus Christ and working for our salvation. The Church is also a gathering place for support to one another. It is meant to be a safe haven for the entire community where each of us can rely on the other to nurture our youth, to help those in need, to feel a sense of belonging, and to recognize our shortcomings. It is a place where Jesus teachings are meant to be heard and implemented; to forgive one another in order to maintain peace of mind, to love one another as Jesus loves us, to work for the good of the Church so that our lives will be richer with the love of Jesus Christ. The Church is a place for us to strengthen our prayer life and our relationship with Jesus. It is through prayer that we are able to overcome our weaknesses, our shortcomings, and our sinfulness. It is a place where we ask Almighty God to help us to be more patient, understanding, compassionate, and accepting. How can we attempt to implement these virtues without the help of Jesus Christ? The Church is you! Each of everyone one of you makes up this community of St. Maron. And regardless of some issues we may encounter Father Vincent Farhat, Pastor Father Michael Marrone, Weekend Assistant Father Richard Cannuli, Weekend Assistant Sr. Nahida Al-Sawa, CSFN, Director of Religious Education Quote of the Week Simply proclaim the Lord Christ holy in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for people who ask you the reason for the hope that you have. But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their accusations. throughout the year, this community is vibrant and strong because of one Person God. Recognizing this, our community can only get better when we place our trust in Jesus Christ and let Him guide us where He wishes. If we truly believe that the Church is built on the Rock of Faith, we must trust in that and work for that. Brothers and sisters, this is your Maronite Catholic Church. May it be a place of peace, harmony, love for each other and for the Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Happy Feast Day of SS. Peter and Paul. WITH THANKS AND GRATITUDE Where two or more are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them. MT 18:20 This past weekend we came together as a community and offered South Philly one of the best summer festivals we could offer. The dedicated and hard work that this community gave is a testament to each and every one of you that with God all things are possible. Although Friday evening proved to be a little unsettling we made the best of it. I would like to thank Billy Tayoun and Tony Frangie for taking on this daunting task of managing and running this festival. The many hours they spent meeting and planning behind the scenes were endless. I also thank each of you too many to single out from the cooking, the bar, the setting up, the music and DJ, the running of the booths, the children who worked in the Kids Zone, and to Harold, Harold, and Eric; all of you showed the greatness of a community when we come together and work for the greater glory of God. Although the work is long and tiring, it is well worth it when we see the joy and happiness of those who came and supported us. Once again, great job St. Maron Parishioners and Friends and thank you! 2014 SUMMER FESTIVAL Our summer festival once again proved to be a success thanks to all of you who worked so hard extending our traditional hospitality to South Philly. Our hard work is imperative to the upkeep of this community. Listed below are the fruits of our work. This year we acquired some major extraordinary expenses that will serve us well throughout the year. Some of these items are the walk-in cooler, baymarie, steam table, cash registers, and advertisements in the local papers. Many thanks to this community for yet another wonderful festival. Total Income: $ 56,381.00 Total Expense: $ 24,424.54 Profit: $ 31,956.46 NEW ROOF INSTALLED I am happy to inform you that the newly installed roof for the Church Hall is complete. The roof is guaranteed for five years and all materials and labor came to $29,000.00. I am confident that we will no longer have any problems with leaking. SECOND COLLECTION As per the directive of the Eparchy of St. Maron, there will be a second collection on Sunday, June 29, 2014, for the Holy Father s collection (Peter s Pence). The entire collection is sent to the Holy Father for him to assist with emergency financial assistance to aid the most needy throughout the world. Thank you for your generosity. FAREWELL RECEPTION JULY 27 As many of you have heard, John and Marianne Zaidan will be moving to N. Carolina to be close to their daughter and her family. This news has touched the hearts of all of us here at St. Maron s. John and his family have been parishioners of St. Maron since the very beginning and has been instrumental in the building of this community. There are no words to express our appreciation for everything that he has contributed to this parish and to the people here most of which is his love and dedication. It is not an easy decision to move away from a home you have known all of your life. But always know that you have a home here and people who love you and will miss you. Thank you for all you have done for this community and for your love of this Church. Please join this entire community on Sunday, July 27, 2014, for a farewell reception for John and Marianne, immediately following Divine Liturgy, at the Church hall. We ask Almighty God to bless John and Marianne with good health and happiness as they begin yet another chapter in their lives. We thank Thee for the blessings bestowed upon the work of priests and religious; and we pray that Thou wilt add to the number of those who now pray, labor, and sacrifice themselves for Thy glory and the salvation of souls. Give them unselfish zeal for Thy glory. O good Jesus, give us more priests and Quote of the Week I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of the hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. Saint Paul in his second letter to Saint Timothy religious after Thine own heart. Amen.
