Sholosh Seudot Halacha Discussion A few years ago, we all remember how three teenage boys were kidnapped by Palestinian terrorists and the effect upon the Jewish world was enormous. Everyone with any Jewish feeling was worried, praying and hoping that they would be found alive. The IDF scoured Israel, Gaza and the West band house to house looking for them. After a few weeks passed, hope was diminishing that they would be found alive. The Army internally stated that there was only a 10% chance that the boys would be found alive, but did not release this information to the public. They did not want the morale of the soldiers to fall and the hopes of Israel and Jews worldwide to falter. During this time, while still hoping for a good return, a group of university professors approached the IDF and asked the following: In the chance that the boys are dead, we would like to make a search, not to save the boys, but to retrieve their bodies. They proposed that they acquire experts to review satellite photographs of the land between the location the boys were taken and Chevron. They believed that, if the boys were killed, that their bodies would be buried in that area. On that basis, there would be a change in the topography of the land in the area and it may be evident from the satellite photos. The IDF agreed, while demanded a total secrecy from the professors. The agreement was on a Thursday night and the professors approached the Rabbi to ask if they could, in fact, continue this search for the bodies on Shabbat. The Rabbi answered that they could not, since they were searching for dead bodies and there was no pretence of Saving a Life which would allow the breaking of Shabbat. The group asked the Rabbi if it would be acceptable to raise the question further with Rav Rimon, the Chief Posek of the area. The Rabbi agreed. What was the final conclusion?
