Yours in Christ, Before we get to Ash Wednesday, we should start asking ourselves some questions and we should start with some preparations. What does God want to give me this year? This question may require that I slow Fr. Robert Marchwiany, Pastor down a bit and listen to my inner spirit. For example, even if I m very busy, I realize I m hungry when I hear my stomach start growling. Too often, Ash Wednesday is like every other day, except that I manage to get to church and get ashes on my forehead. Is there anything else I can do on Ash Wednesday? How will fasting and abstaining happen for me, for my family on that special day? It doesn t take a lot oftime to prepare for the beginning ST. FLORIAN CHURCH of Lent. It just takes desire and focus. February 26, 2017 * * * NOTICE * * * Page 5 Don't forget to put your e mail address on your envelope. On February 12th, during 11:30 Mass, a woman's ring was mistakenly left in the bathroom. If anyone has information about the ring, please call the rectory at (773) 646-4877. You only need to do this once. If you have already submitted your email address, you do not need to do it again. Church Regulations Regarding Fast & Abstinence "Lent is ordered to preparing for the celebration ofeaster, since the Lenten liturgy prepares for celebration of the Paschal Mystery both catechumens, by the various stages of Christian Initiation, and the faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do penance." The Saint Vincent de Paul clothing bins (located In our parking lot behind the church) are strictly for clothing and shoes ONLY. All bundles should be bagged and tied. Nothing should be left outside the bins. If bins are full, please come back the following week. Bins are emptied on a regular basis. Anything left out-side bins will be destroyed by the weather which makes it useless to everyone. People have been rummaging through the bins and ripping the bags open and taking out clothing. If anyone sees this please remind them that the clothing is for people who are in need. (Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, #27) By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake the serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. SVDP DROP OFF BINS What does it mean to be a Parishioner? 1.
