As we extend the hand of welcome to all, our mission is to learn, love, and live the challenging Word of Jesus Christ, offering parishioners and neighbors direction and support at every phase of their faith journey.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, A WORD FROM FR. IVAN We are all saddened by the events of the previous week that happened so close to us the shooting death of St. Paul resident Philando Castile and later in the week with the killing of 5 officers in Dallas, TX. I am not writing about these facts to be like a judge. I am not in position to do that. What I want to bring out to you is that through these facts we still have a wounded racial society. Archbishop Hebda in his homily of the Mass of Justice and Peace celebrated in the Cathedral of St. Paul on July 8th said, people feel the pain of those who are treated differently because of their race, and country of origin, by police officers who feel that they are being misjudged and underappreciated. He also added quoting from St. Paul, If one part of the body suffers, all the parts suffer with it. This is the true attitude of a Christian community. However, there is a risk of a community to remain with this attitude of pain. This can lead us to feel hopelessness, helpless, or weakness in these moments. We should get the strength from our Lord who gives us the healing of unity, strength and hope, and to look forward as a community. These events may be an important moment for our parish life to give an answer and an example for the racial problems we have in our society. The mission of the Church is to be a light (a service to give light) for the good of others. We have a mixed community, especially at the 10:30am mass where we come together in prayer every Sunday. It is God who calls us together. It is his work and we all answer freely to his call. This I see in parishioners after mass who have the joy of being part of St. Bernard s faith community. This joy of being together expresses itself when we give service to the people from the various cultures here at St. Bernards. Even though we are all different with different situations, it is in the unity that God brings that makes others say and see that even though they are a mixed community, they have love and care for one another. Have a Blessed Sunday, Fr. Ivan Sant frivansant@churchofstbernard-stp.org Pope St. John Paul II on Today s Gospel 1. This Sunday, the liturgy proposes again for our meditation the evangelical episode of Jesus' stay in the home of Martha and Mary (see Luke 10:38-42). While Martha is taken up with domestic affairs, Mary is seated at the feet of the Master and listens to his word. Christ affirms that Mary "has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her" (Luke 10:42). To listen to the Word of God is the most important thing in our lives. 2. Christ is always in our midst and wants to speak to our hearts. We can listen to him by meditating with faith on sacred Scripture, recollecting ourselves in private and communal prayer, pausing in silence before the tabernacle, from which he speaks to us of his love. Especially on Sunday, Christians are called to encounter and listen to the Lord. This occurs in the fullest way by participating in holy Mass, in which Christ prepares for the faithful the table of the Word and Bread of life. But other moments of prayer and reflection, of rest and fraternity, can usefully contribute to sanctify the day of the Lord. 3. When, by the action of the Holy Spirit, God takes up his dwelling in the heart of the believer, it becomes easier to serve brothers. This is how it happened in a singular and perfect way in Mary Most Holy. To her we entrust this vacation period, so that it will be appreciated as a propitious time to rediscover the primacy of the interior life. Page 2 St. Bernard

Parish News & Events Friendship Sunday Today is Friendship Sunday Plan on stopping by after Mass to enjoy a roll and a cup of coffee with your neighbors. Thank you to the Pastoral Council for starting out the new fiscal year as hosts for this event. World Youth Day World Youth Day (WYD) is a worldwide encounter with the Pope which is typically celebrated every three years in a different country. The most recent WYD was celebrated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from July 23rd to 28th, 2013 and the next World Youth Day will be held in Krakow, Poland in 2016. WYD is open to all young people who want to take part in a festive encounter with their contemporaries centered on Jesus Christ. This event is an opportunity to experience in first person the universality of the Church; to share with the whole world the hope of many young people who want to commit themselves to Christ and others. World Youth Day is a unique way to deepen your faith and grow closer to Christ, by means of prayer and the sacraments, together with thousands of other young people who share your interests and ambitions. The Rice Street Parade this year is on Sunday, July 31, starting at 1 p.m. We need parade walkers!
