Christianity offers a different reality; it offers a vision of aging in the realm of God. This vision can be a true gift to the aging person who is trying to find meaning in a time of life characterized by physical, intellectual, emotional, social, familial, environmental, and financial challenges to happiness and well-being. While secular society offers long-term care insurance, Jesus offers the older adult nothing less than the promise of abundant life in the here and now as well as in heaven. -From the introduction to 10 gospel promises for later life Jane Marie Thibault It has been my pastoral experience that in most churches adult Christian education is designed to give us information about the Bible. The result is that we are raising a countless number of life-long Christians, some becoming practically biblical scholars, who have almost zero training on how to live (and grow) faithfully through the stages of life. Continue on page 2

Page 2 Jesus calls us to be life-long disciples- persons committed to learning from Jesus how to live in this world. As Methodists, we embrace the promise that God is making us more Christ-like every day, and yet we dedicate very little of our life together learning how that works in our own lives. As disciples, our study of Scripture should include training to live the abundant life God reveals in the living word. Please join me this summer for a study about living faithfully into the later seasons of life. Wednesday mornings, beginning July 19 th (please read the article in this newsletter for details), we will work through the book 10 gospel promises for later life. Don t worry if you can t make them all, each week will be a new discussion on a different chapter. I look forward to the transformation and inspiration that we will experience together. Jeff MEETING ON THE AGENDA Monday, July 10 5:30 P.M. UMW Executive Committee Meeting Harris Hall SUMMER CHURCH OFFICE HOURS Beginning July 3 rd the church office will operate from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Monday- Friday. This is our new summer schedule. Page 3 BACKPACK PALS NEWS The Long Memorial volunteers have completed the school year program at Stories Creek Elementary. We delivered 30 packs this year to at-risk students who needed a continued source of good nutrition over the weekend. This helps secure better success in school and normal development for them in many ways. The following ladies packed at Beulah Baptist Association on Wednesday afternoons: Carolyn Long, Frances Friday, and Jean Andrews. Their dedication is wonderful. The following volunteers picked up containers on Wednesdays or delivered the containers of food on Thursdays to the school. Jona Fitzgerald, Will Carver, Laura Atkins, Robert and Cheryl Allen, Stephanie Linville, Al Taylor, Michelle Young, Kerry and Sherry MacIntosh. This was a once-a-month commitment and they performed this responsibility beautifully. We are losing one of our volunteers next year, so if you can dedicate one day a month (Thursday) to this important mission, please contact me for information. This is a quick trip that you can share with a friend if you wish. Partnerships work well. Long Memorial has reached out to the program for several years and continues to make donations from Sunday School classes, circles, Vacation Bible school, individuals, UMW, UMM and more. This is a wonderful response from a wonderful congregation. Page 4 SHARE YOUR CHURCH PHOTOS WITH US Long Memorial United Methodist Church is AWESOME and we want to make sure everyone knows that! We now have a Communications Team who is responsible for sharing all this "awesome-ness" with everyone through our Facebook page, Instagram page, church website and more. In order to be able to fully show the world the great things we are doing here at LMUMC, we need your help in providing photos and appropriate information on church events, therefore, we have created an email address where you can send photos and info for us to share via social media and the website. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Pastor Jeff Nash, Jona Fitzgerald or any member of the Communications Team (Martha Butler, Courtney Craig, Donna Kurst, Sheila Mitchiner, and Maribel Strachan) Some examples of things to send: Photos of VBS Photos of any LMUMC youth or children's activities on or off church campus Photos of circle activities or meetings Photos of church services Information about CHURCH related events Email address: lmumcphotos@gmail.com SUMMER STUDY FOR SENIORS Jeff will be leading a ten week study of the book 10 Gospel Promises For Later Life (Thibault). The gathering will be at the church Wednesday mornings from 10am- 11am, beginning July 19th. If you would like to participate all we ask is that you read the book (we will go one chapter a week) and attend when you can. The church will order the books (please let Peggy know you would like one by July 7th). Please consider joining this study. MEET OUR SUMMER DUKE STUDENT My name is Keith Porter. I have lived in Georgia, Mississippi, and North Carolina. I met my wife Pattie in high school. We have been married for 33 years and we have two sons; Greg, who lives in Durham, and Dan who is married to Lauren Winchester Porter and lives in Rock Hill, SC. I started out working in factories, and as a mechanic, and in machine shops. I earned a BSEE from NC A&T State in Greensboro and an MBA from Duke. I retired from IBM as a Senior Technical Staff Member and Executive Consultant after 30 years in engineering, design, personnel management, program management, and consulting with worldwide responsibilities. (continue on page 5)

Page 5 I discerned the call to ministry and enrolled in Duke Divinity School. Last summer I served as a Chaplain intern at Duke Hospital. The Lord has blessed me to be here at this time. The Long Memorial family has made us feel at home and I am so grateful to be here serving the Lord. Some of my duties this summer include helping lead worship and preaching, but I am also excited about a special project. I will be visiting many of you to video and collect some of your rich history that has made Long Memorial such a special place for so many years.
