Next Sunday February 24, 2019 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time Learn Swahili with Fr. Chumo Upendo wa Mungu = God s love Mungu atupenda= God loves us Tupendani sisi kwa sisi = Let s love one another Pray for: Joe Spenser for healing and comfort Our parishioner battling cancer and those healing from surgery Parishioners dealing with long term illnesses, for their families and their caregivers Young couples getting married this year For young people discerning Christian vocations Young men and women serving in the military and their families The elderly persons living alone for their safety and well being Homeless persons The poor, unemployed and underemployed Those who have no one to pray for them Sixth Sunday of the Year The Gospel as well as the first reading for this weekend present both a blessed and an accursed way of life. They are opposite ways of looking at life. We must all choose. We say, through what we do, whether we put our trust in God or if we prefer to get the most enjoyment from this passing world. What Jesus offers is in contrast to this human wisdom. Luke s gospel is down to earth. His beatitudes are more focused. He says blessed are you who are poor, who are now hungry, who are now weeping. Who are these beatitudes meant for? Are they addressed to all people? According to Matthew they are addressed to the crowd, all people. In Luke they are only meant for the disciples. All these blessings are the consequences of their option for poverty. Their spiritual blessing does not stem from their suffering or difficulties they encounter, but from the fact that with the coming of the kingdom, these painful situations will disappear, the hungry will have their fill and those who wept will laugh. Those who choose the opposite way of life of the beatitudes; selfish accumulation of wealth while others languish in poverty and die of hunger, are the enemies of the kingdom and are accursed. Why? Because they have made a wrong choice and find themselves in a situation that renders them incapable of the true wealth offered to them by God in Christ. Do we believe that sharing of our goods, generosity to others, service in charity, forgiveness, compassion, constant search for reconciliation are important endeavors? If so, we are blessed indeed. These will last forever because love is eternal. May the Holy Spirit inspire us to choose blessedness so we may be true disciples. YOUTH CORNER Youth from Immaculate Conception Receive Hands of Christ Award This past week parishes from across the diocese honored their young people with the Diocese of Rochester s Hands of Christ Award. This award is given to high school seniors who are an example of service to their parish and community and who exemplify the presence of Christ in our world. This year, Immaculate Conception honors two of its high school seniors who have been highly involved through attendance at youth groups, service opportunities in our parish, involvement in weekly liturgies and prayer services. They are also incredible young people of faith who help make others around them BETTER. Congratulations to Julia Mecenas and Maria Robinson on receiving the award. May your faith continue to increase and may we all look to you as examples of Christ in our world today. OUR SANCTUARY LAMP WILL BURN THIS WEEK IN MEMORY OF MR. & MRS. JOHN F. BURNS FROM ELIZABETH BURNS AROUND THE AREA/DIOCESE The Diocesan Women s Conference is on March 9.
