Percy Smith Hannah Byun, Principal Organist Choral Introit: Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart arr. Marty Parks Cathedral Choir; David Gardner, director Opening Hymn #34: Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart Rejoice, ye pure in heart, rejoice, give thanks, and sing; Your festal banner wave on high, the cross of Christ your King. With all the angel choirs, with all the saints on earth, Pour out the strains of joy and bliss, true rapture, noblest mirth! Yes, on through life s long path, still chanting as ye go; From youth to age, by night and day, in gladness and in woe. Still lift your standard high, still march in firm array; As warriors through the darkness toil till dawns the golden day. Welcome & Greeting Time Hymn #809: Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Scripture Reading: Jude 1:17-23 (p. 994) 17 But you, beloved, must remember the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18 for they said to you, "In the last time there will be scoffers, indulging their own ungodly lusts." 19 It is these worldly people, devoid of the Spirit, who are causing divisions. 20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; 21 keep yourselves in the love of God; look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on some who are wavering; 23 save
others by snatching them out of the fire; and have mercy on still others with fear, hating even the tunic defiled by their bodies. Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon Hymn #507: I Then Shall Live I then shall live as one who's been forgiven; I'll walk with joy to know my debts are paid. I know my name is clear before my Father; I am His child and I am not afraid. So greatly pardoned, I'll forgive another; The law of love I gladly will obey. I then shall live as one who's learned compassion; I've been so loved I'll risk loving, too. I know how fear builds walls instead of bridges; I'll dare to see another's point of view. And when relationships demand commitment, Then I'll be there to care and follow through. Your kingdom come around and through and in me, Your power and glory, let them shine through me; Your hallowed name, oh may I bear with honor, And may your living Kingdom come in me. The Bread of Life, O may I share with honor, And may you feed a hungry world through me. Celebration of Baptism The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell, the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Congregational Response Through God s covenant and the sacrament of baptism, we welcome these new sisters and brother into this family of faith. We promise, relying on God s help, to order our congregational and individual life and witness that they may grow in the knowledge of the love of God and grow in their commitment to Christ as Lord and Savior. We further seek to surround them continually with Christian love and care, that they may live as Christ commands.
Invitation to Children s Worship < < W E H E A R > Offering Moment & Prayer of Dedication Tithes & Offerings Offertory: If Ye Love Me Philip Stopford Cathedral Choir If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, even the Spirit of Truth. (John 14:15 17) Sermon: Homecoming George Hinman Texts: Lamentations 3:19-33 (p. 669) 19 The thought of my affliction and my homelessness is wormwood and gall! 20 My soul continually thinks of it and is bowed down within me. 21 But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: 22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 "The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him." 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. 27 It is good for one to bear the yoke in youth, 28 to sit alone in silence when the Lord has imposed it, 29 to put one's mouth to the dust (there may yet be hope), 30 to give one's cheek to the smiter, and be filled with insults. 31 For the Lord will not reject forever. 32 Although he causes grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; 33 for he does not willingly afflict or grieve anyone. Jude 1:17-23 (p. 22 And have mercy on some who are wavering; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; and have mercy on still others with fear, hating even the tunic defiled by their bodies. << WE RESPOND>> Hymn of Response #441: Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, calling for you and for me; See, on the portals he s waiting and watching, watching for you and for me. Come home, come home, ye who are weary, come home; Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, Calling, O sinner, come home!
Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading, pleading for you and for me? Why should we linger and heed not his mercies, mercies for you and for me? O for the wonderful love he has promised, promised for you and for me! Though we have sinned, he has mercy and pardon, Pardon for you and for me. Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Closing Hymn #505: Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it! Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed through his infinite mercy, his child, and forever, I am. Redeemed, redeemed, redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed through his infinite mercy, his child and forever, I am. Redeemed and so happy in Jesus, no language my rapture can tell; I know that the light of his presence with me doth continually dwell. I think of my blessed Redeemer, I think of him all the day long; I sing, for I cannot be silent; his love is the theme of my song. Benediction Instrumental Postlude: Recessional F. W. Around Jesus. We live in a post-christian era. After centuries at the center of culture, today believers find themselves trembling on the margins. As unfamiliar as it might feel, the people of God have been here before: Exile. From the rubble of Judah God called a tender and reluctant boy to speak his word. After 40 years Jeremiah earned his reputation as a prophet of doom, but his real calling was to be a builder. Because then - as today - God is building a people for himself. God is a builder. Jeremiah walked through the rubble, but he pointed to Jesus and to the communities God would form among his followers. Let's read the prophet of doom together, learn how to be people who build people, and follow Jesus through exile to help one another find a new home in him. CONDOLENCE Our sympathies to the family and friends of Jenny Steinbach who died February 7. A burial service will be held February 26 at 2:00 pm at Evergreen Washelli.
