In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Lord s Prayer P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. P: Christ invites you to a place of honor at this banquet. Welcome to the feast. Please be seated Holy Communion As a member of the ELCA, Faith United celebrates open communion. All those who wish to receive the grace found in Christ are welcome to come forward to the table to share in communion. Following the usher s guidance, please come forward down the center aisle, and receive an individual cup. There are two chalices (pouring cups); the first contains wine and the second grape juice. When you have received the bread and wine (or juice), return to your pew via the side aisle. Children and others who do not wish to receive 12 Prayer of the Day P: Let us pray Lord God, with endless mercy you receive the prayers of all who call upon you. By your Spirit show us the things we ought to do, and give us the grace and power to do them, throught Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Please be seated First Reading: Isaiah 58: 1-9 L: A reading from Isaiah. Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins. 2 Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practised righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgements, they delight to draw near to God. 3 Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice? Look, you serve your own interest on your fast-day, and oppress all your workers. 4 Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high. 5 Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? 6 Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? 8 Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator * shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rearguard. 9 Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 5

Psalm 112 1-9 A: Hallelujah! Happy are they who fear the Lord C: and have great delight in God s commandments! A: Their descendants will be mighty in the land; C: the generation of the upright will be blessed. A: Wealth and riches will be in their house, C: and their righteousness will last forever. A: Light shines in the darkness for the upright; C: the righteous are merciful and full of compassion. A: It is good for them to be generous in lending C: and to manage their affairs with justice. A: For they will never be shaken; C: the righteous will be kept in everlasting remembrance. A: They will not be afraid of any evil rumors; C: their heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. A: Their heart is established and will not shrink, C: until they see their desire upon their enemies. A: They have given freely to the poor, and their righteousness stands fast forever; B: they will hold up their head with honor. Anthem: Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-12 L: A reading from 1 Corinthians. 2When I came to you, brothers and sisters, * I did not come proclaiming the mystery * of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. 4 My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, * but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith might rest not on 6 human wisdom but on the power of God. 6Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. 7 But we speak God s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Great Thanksgiving P: It is indeed right, our duty and join their unending hymn: Eucharistic Prayer P: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. 11

Please Be Seated Offering Offertory Response Let the Vineyards Lord of glory. 9 But, as it is written, What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God s except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mathew, the 5th chapter. Offering Prayer A: Let us pray...god of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. 10 C: Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:13-20 13 You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. 1 You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. 17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. 18 For 7

truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, * not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks * one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated Sermon Hymn of the Day: ELW #677 This Little Light of Mine Apostle s Creed A: As we grow together in faith, we confess our faith in the words of the Apostles Creed. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Joys and Concerns Prayers of the Church A: Called to be a light to the nations, let us pray for Gods justice, peace and healing. Eternal God, you are one-in three and three in one. Strengthen the ministry of the World Council of Churches and the Lutheran World Federation. Solidify ecumenical partnership as they work to break the bonds of injustice and let the oppressed go free. Hear us, O God. C: your mercy is great. A: Send relief where storms and floods overwhelm. Provide shelter and safe habitat for all creatures. Protect seeds and bulbs for the spring and fall harvest. Hear us, O God. C: your mercy is great. A: Ignite the nations with the flame of your justice. Enlighten the leaders of the the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank with your wisdom; guide government officials to seek economic justice in their communities. Hear us, O God. C: your mercy is great. A: Comfort the afflicted, compassionate God. Accompany all who wait on death row. Reconcile families torn apart by crime or addiction. Heal the brokenhearted, the newly diagnosed, and all who suffer (especially). Hear us, O God. C: your mercy is great. A: Fill those who form the faith of others with insight and energy. Multiply the fruit of their labor. Grow disciples eager to feast on your living word and embody it each day. Hear us, O God. C: your mercy is great A: We thank you for all the saints who dared to shine with the light of Christ (especially the martyrs of Japan). Compel us to shine freely and witness to your abundant grace each day. Hear us, O God. C: your mercy is great P: Receive these prayers in the name of Christ, the light of the world, who is one with you and the Holy Sprit, now and forever. Peace P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. (The congregation shares a sign of peace by simply saying Peace be with you.) 8 9
