YEAR 2 OLD TESTAMENT Unit 1 The Story Begins Unit Focus: God s story through the ages begins with an expression of His power as He created all that is. Creation turned away and in this story we see the results of those choices. However, God s love endured and hope was restored with the covenant He established. Memory Verse: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1) Lesson 1 Creation Scripture: Genesis 1:1 2:3 Focus: In the beginning there was God. He spoke and creation came to be. Lesson 2 Adam and Eve Scripture: Genesis 2:15-23; 3 Focus: Adam and Eve s disobedience brought sin into the world which separated them from God. Lesson 3 Cain and Abel Scripture: Genesis 4:1-16 Focus: As the story continues we find people making wrong choices as a result of sin entering the world.

Lesson 4 Noah and the Promise Scripture: Genesis 6:9-22; 7:13-18; 8:6-22; 9:8-17 Focus: Noah chose to obey God even when no one else did. God provided an escape for Noah and his family and entered into a covenant relationship with all creation. Unit 2 Abraham Unit Focus: God s story of redemption continues, as He provides for Abraham who trusts and obeys. Memory Verse: Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. (Jeremiah 17:7) Lesson 5 God Calls Abram Scripture: Genesis 12:1-9; 13:1-18 Focus: Abram chose to trust God s call and follow where He led. Lesson 6 God Gives Abraham a Promise Scripture: Genesis 15:1-7; 17:1-10, 15-21 Focus: God s covenant with Abraham came as a surprise. Lesson 7 God Confirms His Promise Scripture: Genesis 18:1-19; 21:1-7 Focus: Isaac s birth confirms God s promise to Abraham and Sarah. Lesson 8 God Tests and Provides for Abraham Scripture: Genesis 22:1-18 Focus: Abraham s difficult test reveals God s gracious provision. Unit 3 Jacob Unit Focus: God renewed his covenant with Jacob and changed his name to Israel. Memory Verse: I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

Lesson 9 Jacob Tricks Isaac Scripture: Genesis 27:1-40 Focus: Jacob selfishly tricked his father with the help of his mother. Lesson 10 Jacob Meets God Scripture: Genesis 27:41 29:14 Focus: Jacob s encounter with God changed his life. Lesson 11 Jacob Is Tricked Scripture: Genesis 29:14-30; 30:25 31:13 Focus: God blessed Jacob even when others tried to deceive him. Lesson 12 Jacob Returns Home Scripture: Genesis 31:17-18; 32:3 33:20; 35:1-15 Focus: Jacob followed God s directions to return home and make peace with his brother. Unit 4 Joseph Unit Focus: God was with Joseph through many difficult situations. Memory Verse: Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you. (Isaiah 54:10) Lesson 13 From Favored Son to Slave Scripture: Genesis 37:1-36; 39:1-2 Focus: Joseph s dreams and his father s favor caused his brothers to despise him. They sold Joseph into slavery, but God was with him. Lesson 14 From Slavery to Power Scripture: Genesis 39 41:52 Focus: God was with Joseph during his time in prison. God gave Joseph the ability to interpret dreams. Joseph was raised to a high position in Egypt. Lesson 15 Brothers Reunited Scripture: Genesis 42 45:5, 14-15 Focus: When Joseph s brothers went to Egypt to get food, they did not know him. Joseph finally revealed himself to them and welcomed them.

Lesson 16 Forgiveness Heals a Family Scripture: Genesis 46:1-7, 26-34; 47:1-11; 50:15-26 Focus: Jacob s whole family moved to Egypt to be with Joseph so they could have food during the famine. God used Joseph s circumstances to continue His covenant. Unit 5 Moses and the Exodus Unit Focus: God chose Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Memory Verse: The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. (Deuteronomy 31:8) Lesson 17 God Chooses a Man Scripture: Exodus 1:6 2:10; 2:23 4:17 Focus: God chose Moses to lead His people out of slavery. Lesson 18 God Delivers His People Scripture: Exodus 5 6:1; 7 11 Focus: God showed His power to deliver His people. Lesson 19 The Escape and Wanderings Scripture: Exodus 12:1-40; 13:14 15:2; 16:2-5, 21-28; 17:1-7 Focus: God led His people out of Egypt and through the desert. Lesson 20 God Establishes a New Covenant Scripture: Exodus 19:1-8, 16-20; 20:1-17; 32:1-34; 34:1-10 Focus: God gave the Ten Commandments to His people to guide their lives and confirm the covenant relationship. Unit 6 The Judges Unit Focus: After Moses death, God raised up judges to lead the people. Memory Verse: I will lift up my eyes to the mountains where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1-2)

Lesson 21 Joshua Scripture: Numbers 27:15-23; Joshua 1:1-2, 7-9; 6:1-20; 23:14-16; 24:14-15 Focus: God chose Joshua to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. Lesson 22 Deborah s Courage Scripture: Judges 4 5 Focus: Deborah encouraged others to follow God. Lesson 23 God and Gideon Win the Battle Scripture: Judges 6 7 Focus: Gideon trusted God and obeyed him. Lesson 24 Samson s Choices and Consequences Scripture: Judges 13:1-5; 15:13-16, 20; 16 Focus: Samson made some wrong choices but God was merciful. Unit 7 Saul and David (Psalms) Unit Focus: Saul was the first king of Israel, chosen by God and anointed by Samuel. When Saul turned away from God, Samuel anointed David to be the next king. Memory Verse: Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. (1 Chronicles 16:11) Lesson 25 Samuel and Saul Scripture: 1 Samuel 3; 8 12 (selections); 15:10-11 Focus: Samuel led God s people but they asked for a king. Lesson 26 David Becomes King Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:6-13; 2 Samuel 2:1-11; 5:1-12, 17-25 Focus: God chose David to be the king because of his love for God. Lesson 27 David s Sin Scripture: 2 Samuel 11 12 Focus: David disobeyed God but repented with sorrow.

Lesson 28 God s Promise and David s Response Scripture: 1 Chronicles 17; 28; 29:10-20 Focus: God promised David that one of his family would always sit on the throne. Unit 8 Solomon and Elijah (Proverbs) Unit Focus: Though God gave Solomon great wisdom, he turned away from God and led the Israelites into idolatry. The kingdom was split and many other kings disobeyed God. Elijah, the prophet, tried to bring the people back to God during the time of the evil king Ahab. Memory Verse: For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. (Proverbs 2:6) Lesson 29 Solomon s Wisdom Scripture: 1 Kings 3; 4:20-34; 5:1 6:1; 8:1-30, 62-66 Focus: Solomon chose wisdom when God offered him anything he wanted. Lesson 30 Solomon s Disobedience Scripture: 1 Kings 9:1-9; 11 Focus: Solomon disobeyed God and suffered for it. Lesson 31 Elijah on Mount Carmel Scripture: 1 Kings 18 Focus: Elijah faced the false prophets, proclaiming the one true God. Lesson 32 God Comforted Elijah Scripture: 1 Kings 19:1-18 Focus: God sent angels to care for Elijah. Then God spoke to Elijah in a gentle whisper. Unit 9 Other Kings Unit Focus: Israel and Judah continued to have problems with kings that failed to follow God, but some of the kings returned to the worship of God. Memory Verse: Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. (Psalm 119:105)

Lesson 33 Joash Scripture: 2 Kings 12; 2 Chronicles 24:1-19 Focus: God works through faithful people to guide others. Lesson 34 Hezekiah Scripture: 2 Kings 18:1-8; 20:1-11 Focus: God hears and answers prayer. Lesson 35 Manasseh Scripture: 2 Kings 21:1-6; 2 Chronicles 33:10-16 Focus: The Bible tells us about God and His love. Lesson 36 Josiah Scripture: 2 Kings 22:1 23:3; 2 Chronicles 34 Focus: Our lives are transformed when we read and obey God s Word. Unit 10 Isaiah/Jeremiah/Ezekiel Unit Focus: The prophets faithfully shared God s message with the people and with us. Memory Verse: Then I heard the voice of the LORD saying, Whom shall I send? And I said, Here am I. Send me! (Isaiah 6:8) Lesson 37 Isaiah s Call Scripture: Isaiah 6:1-13 Focus: God commissioned Isaiah to call the people to repentance. Lesson 38 The Potter s House Scripture: Jeremiah 18:1-12 Focus: God is sovereign, but He responds to the choices we make. Lesson 39 Jeremiah Scripture: Jeremiah 36 Focus: God gave Jeremiah a message for the people of Israel. Lesson 40 Valley of the Dry Bones Scripture: Ezekiel 37:1-14 Focus: God gives Ezekiel a vision of hope for the people.

Unit 11 In Captivity Unit Focus: God honored the Hebrews who obeyed Him and stayed true to their beliefs. Memory Verse: Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. (1 Corinthians 16:13) Lesson 41 The Fall of Jerusalem Scripture: 2 Chronicles 36:11-21; 2 Kings 25:1-21 Focus: God allowed the Israelites to be taken into captivity after the fall of Jerusalem. Lesson 42 Stand Up for Your Beliefs Scripture: Daniel 1 Focus: Daniel and his friends refused the king s food, choosing instead to stay true to their beliefs. Lesson 43 The Three Hebrews Scripture: Daniel 3 Focus: Daniel s three friends refused to worship the image of gold. They were thrown into a fire but God delivered them. Lesson 44 Daniel and the Lions Scripture: Daniel 6 Focus: Daniel defied a decree of the king and was thrown into a den of lions. God delivered Daniel by closing the mouths of the lions. Unit 12 Restoration Unit Focus: After many years of captivity, a group of Israelites return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple and walls. Memory Verse: The days are coming, declares the LORD, When I will make a new covenant I will be their God, and they will be my people. (Jeremiah 31:31, 33)

Lesson 45 Ezra Scripture: Ezra 1:1-5; 3 6 Focus: Ezra tells about rebuilding the Temple following the release of some captives. Lesson 46 Esther Scripture: Esther 1 4 Focus: Esther trusted God when faced with a very difficult situation. Lesson 47 Nehemiah Scripture: Nehemiah 1:1-4; 2 4; 6 Focus: Nehemiah rebuilds the walls of Jerusalem. Lesson 48 Review of the Old Testament Scripture: Nehemiah 9; Zechariah 9:9-16 Focus: Nehemiah reminds the Israelites of their history and that God has established His covenant with them.
