Steve reads from book: Luk 4:5-8 5 The devil led Yeshua up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours." 8 Yeshau answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'" Worshipping God and Serving God go together: NASB - Rom 12:1 - Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship i. Worshipping God and serving God go together. Vss. 4-8 are about spiritual gifts, because worshipping God and serving God go together. Worshipping God and Humility also go together: Context: 12:3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. 1 11/22/16
My point: Serving God and worshipping Him alone requires us to grow in humility. Humility is key to spiritual growth. All three quotes during Yeshua's temptation come from the wilderness wanderings of ancient Israel. Here's what God said during one of their trials: Deu 8:3 He humbled you,// causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. God humbled Israel to teach them. /////////////////////// Satan on the other hand is like the father of pride: He tried to entice Yeshua to worship Him ---hubris! Yeshua's response comes from Deut. 6. Deu 6:12-16 12 be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 13 Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name. 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; 2 11/22/16
15 for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. 16 Do not put the LORD your God to the test as you did at Massah. In the wilderness Israel was tempted to worship other gods. Israel succumbed and worshiped other Gods. Golden calf Baal peor Psa 106:25-28 25 They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the LORD. 26 So he swore to them with uplifted hand that he would make them fall in the wilderness, 27 make their descendants fall among the nations and scatter them throughout the lands. 28 They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods; Idolatry is demon worship. 1Co 10:19-20 - Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 3 11/22/16
Israel was tempted and fell. Israel worshiped demons. The head demon tempted Yeshua and he passed the test. He did it by referring back to the wilderness experience. Israel was tested in the wilderness for 40 years. We failed. We worshipped other gods, we grumbled we put God to the test. As a consequence we wandered for 40 years. As I pointed out previously: Yeshua was also tested in the wilderness, but for 40 days: He didn't worship other God's. He sent Satan away. Resist the devil and he will flee. Yeshua didn't grumble, but like a lamb led to the slaughter he didn't open his mouth. He didn't put God to the test He said Not my will but thine be done. Yeshua did for Israel what Israel failed to do for herself. Just like Yeshua we are to: Resist Satan. 4 11/22/16
We are to be humble and not grumble. And finally we are not to put God to the test, but rather in humility worship and serve Him only saying not my will but thine be done. ///////////////// The quote is different: Deuteronomy 6:13 Matthew 4:10 Fear the LORD your God, serve him. FEAR the LORD Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only ii. WORSHIP the Lord Why does Deut. Say fear God and Matthew says worship God? John Gill - to fear the Lord, and to worship him, is the same thing. Worship includes both an internal and external reverence of God: The Hebrew + the Greek backs that up: BDB Definition: י רא to fear, reverence, honour, respect to inspire reverence or godly fear or awe 5 11/22/16
Strong Definition: προσκυνεω (proskuneo) - pros-koo-neh'-o...to prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): - worship. Another lesson: There are those that say Jesus is not God. However we just learned we are only to worship God. The Bible shows Jesus being worshipped and accepting worship. Mat 14:33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." Mat 28:9 Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. But it all started in a little manger 2,000 years ago: Mat 2:1-11 2:1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." // 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 6 11/22/16
4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Wise men still worship Him. Wise men worhsip the Lord our God and serve Him only. Let's pray. 7 11/22/16
