The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. PARENT S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms. FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use, please switch your hearing aid to T. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, You sent Your one and only Son as the Word of life for our eyes to see and our ears to hear. Help us believe what the Scriptures proclaim about Him and do the things that are pleasing in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, You Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2

THE DIVINE SERVICE WITH HOLY COMMUNION Rite 2, p. 60 8:30 OPENING HYMN #15 HOLY, HOLY, HOLY! LORD GOD ALMIGHTY 10:45 SUNDAY SCHOOL ALL OUR SORROWS SOON ARE OVER WORDS ON PAGE 19 THE INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord; 3

P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O Most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us; have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You, and of Your will, and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His onlybegotten Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God, and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. C: Grant this unto us, O Lord. Amen. THE KYRIE ELEISON (LORD, HAVE MERCY) (Congregation remains standing for hymn of praise) HYMN OF PRAISE #16 FROM ALL THAT DWELL BELOW THE SKIES 4

THE SALUTATION THE COLLECT P: Let us pray one God, now and forever. THE LESSON ISAIAH 6:1-8 1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each one had six wings. With two they covered their faces. With two they covered their feet. With two they flew. 3 One called to another and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory! 4 The foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of the one who called, and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 Then I said, I am doomed! I am ruined, because I am a man with unclean lips, and I dwell among a people with unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Armies! 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, carrying a glowing coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7 He touched my mouth with the coal and said, Look, this has touched your lips, so your guilt is taken away, and your sin is forgiven. 5

8 Then I heard the Lord s voice, saying, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Then I said, Here I am. Send me! THE EPISTLE 1 CORINTHIANS 14:12B-20 12 Since you are eager for spiritual gifts, seek to use them abundantly in a way that will build up the church. 13 That is why a person who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 So what is to be done? I will pray using my spirit, and I will pray also using my understanding. I will sing using my spirit, and I will sing also using my understanding. 16 Otherwise, how will an uninformed person say the Amen after you give thanks, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 To be sure, you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brothers, do not be children in your thinking, but be like babies in regard to evil, and be mature in your thinking. THE VERSE OF THE DAY P: Alleluia. Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Alleluia. (John 8:12 cf. NIV) THE ALLELUIA THE HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel for the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany is written in the 5 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the 1 st verse. 6

THE GOSPEL LUKE 5:1-11 1 One time, while the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. 2 He saw two boats there along the lakeshore. The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Jesus got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the shore. He sat down and began teaching the crowds from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the deep water, and let down your nets for a catch. 5 Simon answered him, Master, we worked hard all through the night and caught nothing. But at your word I will let down the nets. 6 When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets were about to tear apart. 7 They signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Go away from me, because I am a sinful man, Lord. 9 For Peter and all those with him were amazed at the number of fish they had caught, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, Have no fear. From now on you will be catching people. 11 After they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him. P: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 7

THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the Resurrection of the dead and the Life of the world to come. Amen. THE PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. THE PROPER PREFACE AND SANCTUS P: It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God; and now we praise You that You sent us Your only-begotten Son and that in Him, being found in fashion as a Man, You manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels 11

and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 12

THE LORD S PRAYER P: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and 13

for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. THE AGNUS DEI (LAMB OF GOD) 14

P: Let us pray: We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through these salutary gifts, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through them in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. 17

THE SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. THE BENEDICAMUS P: Let us bless the Lord. THE BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. 18
