Words from scripture are spoken or sung to proclaim who God is and what God has done. We are thus reminded that our worship centers in God and not in ourselves. PCUSA Directory for Worship *Call to Worship One: Come, people of God! ALL: Take refuge in the Lord. One: God listens when we cry out. ALL: God rescues us when we call. One: God leads and guides us with unfailing love. ALL: Come, let us worship God together! *Prayer of Confession (All) Meg Johnson Almighty God, we confess the brokenness of our lives. We cover our ears so we cannot hear the cries of those in need, or you urging us to respond. We rush together to defend every issue that matters to us, but quickly disperse when you would call us to be your holy people. We shout as loud as we can to cheer on our sports teams, but can manage only whispers when it comes to sharing the good news. Forgive us and do not hold our sins against us. Clothe us in grace and hope so that we might be strong enough to follow Jesus as he leads us in the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Silence for Personal Confession In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. *Assurance of Pardon *Gloria Patri 581 h.w. greatorex Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. The Assurance of Pardon proclaims God s faithfulness. Our lives are redeemed by the saving grace of God the Gospel in miniature. God does for us what we cannot do for ourselves. WE SHARE OUR LIFE & GIFTS Joys and Concerns of the Church Preparation for Prayer (473) Shepherd Me, O God shepherd me Prayer of Thanksgiving and the Lord s Prayer (All) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. The Prayers of the People combine thanksgiving and intercession for the community and the world, providing a space for us to name the places of celebration and of sorrow in our lives. Offertory Prelude in C Major Amy Bishop, Organ J. S. Bach

Alan Dyer

*Affirmation of Faith (All) WE GO FORTH TO SERVE A Brief Statement of Faith We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. In 1983, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was formed by the reunion of the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America and the Presbyterian Church in the United States. Integral to reunion was the preparation of a Brief Statement of Faith. While recognizing realities of diversity and disagreement in both the church and the world, members of the drafting committee sought to articulate Presbyterians common identity. *Hymn of Dedication 246 Christ is Alive! truro *Benediction Choral Response (765) May the God of Hope Go with Us argentina Postlude All Glory Be to God on High Amy Bishop, Organ arr. M. Burkhardt If You Are New Here. Whether you are visiting from out-of-town, a seasonal resident, or searching for a church home, we are delighted that you are worshiping with us today. If you are interested in receiving more information about membership or the ministries of our congregation, please indicate that on the Friendship Register as it is passed down your pew at the beginning of worship so that we can be in touch with you soon. Child Care. Children of all ages are welcome in worship. If you prefer, a nursery is available for children, birth through age five. The nursery is located in the Children s Wing at the rear of the church. If You Are in Need of Prayer. You may fill out a prayer request card (available in the pews) and place it in the offering plate or hand it to an usher. To Aid in Worship. A Rocking Room with live video of the service is available in the chapel located outside of the front right doors of the sanctuary. Hearing assistance devices and large print hymnals and Bibles may be obtained from the ushers. Sermons Online. To hear sermons online, visit www.sspres.org/sermons.

To Ponder Prayerfully Cost of Faith What people don t realize is how much religion costs. They think faith is a big electric blanket, when, of course, it is the cross.
