Lydia Project The United Methodist General Conference will be coming to Minneapolis in 2020. The Dakotas- Minnesota Area has a wonderful opportunity to come together to provide hospitality. We intend to greet every delegate, dignitary, bishop, and spouse with a handmade scarf, to serve not only as a memento of General Conference but also as a practical solution to drafty, airconditioned rooms. That s where you come in! Help us knit or crochet 10,000 purple scarves. We are calling this the Lydia Project, after Lydia in Acts 16. Get details, guidelines and free patterns for the Lydia Project at https://www.dakotasumc.org/lydiaproject. Scarves should be hand-knitted or hand-crocheted. Use solid purple yarn (think Minnesota Vikings or Prince). Royal Purple and bright purple are great. No lavender and no variegated yarn. Use acrylic yarn that could be washed if needed. The pattern can be the creator s choice. Free patterns are on the conference website. Finished scarves should be 6-7 by at least 60 Fringe is optional. The scarf must be at 60 before fringe. Once your congregation commits to creating a specific number of scarves, the contact person will receive that number of tags in the mail. The tags have a space for the creator to write his/ her name and church, and to put a dot on a map that indicates the creator s approximate location. Use purple yarn to attach a tag to each scarf. Package each individual scarf in a gallon-size Ziplock bag. Plan to bring scarves to Annual Conference 2019. Invite the scarf creators to pray for General Conference 2020, and for the recipients of their scarves.
