BONAVENTURE GROWING IN SPIRIT, COMMUNITY AND SERVICE Inspired by St. Francis we seek to live and proclaim the gospel in our daily lives, responding to the spiritual hungers of the community and becoming an oasis of peace, prayer and service. January 27, 2019 A Right to Justice Jesus stood up in his hometown and announced his program: to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind and release to prisoners. It may not sound particularly religious to some, but it was a program established by one who had returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit. Sunday s liturgy juxtaposes the story of Jesus reading in the synagogue with the story of Ezra reading the law to people upon their return from exile. The suggestion is that Jesus program is a kind of law, a rule that should govern our lives. Bringing good news to the poor, liberating people from all their oppressions, this is not some optional activity that one can engage in only if one is inclined. It is the law of the Lord, it is the program for which we have all been anointed. In His plan of salvation. God gave Israel its law. Of this collection of laws, love of God above all things and of neighbor as oneself already constitute the center. But the justice which must govern relations between people, and the law which is its juridical expression, also belong to the sum and substance of the biblical law. It is in this context that one should appreciate the biblical law s care for the poor, the needy, the widow and the orphan: They have a right to justice according to the juridical ordinances of the people of God. St. Bonaventure s Ministry with Maturing Adults A Spirituality for the Second Half of Life Embracing Wholeness and Challenge 2019 Winter Program St. Bonaventure s Ministry with Maturing Adults Tuesday, January 29 th, Mini-Retreat for all parishioners; 9:30 11:45 am in the Francis room Get me out of this bird bath Wisdom for Living from Saint Francis of Assisi Retreat Presenter: Friar Dennis J. Mason, OFM Conv. A bird on his shoulder, a rabbit at his feet and sometimes even a wolf thrown in for good measure. Artistic representations of St. Francis are beautiful, sometimes inspiring. But they often miss the depth of his spirit. Francis was a person who knew the joys and the struggles of being related: to God, to his brothers and sisters and to the world. He left us a legacy of wisdom on doing this thing called life. Join us for a morning retreat as we walk in Francis sandals, reliving a few episodes from his life. Through exploration, reflection and discussion, and prayer we ll rescue St. Francis from the birdbath and immerse ourselves in his wisdom. All are welcome! No registration required. St. Bonaventure Parish Mary Matthews Public Speaking Contest Every year, the St. Bonaventure CWL council holds the Mary Matthews Public Speaking Contest for Grades 7 & 8 students. As in previous years, the eligible students of St. Bonaventure School will be participating in the contest. This year, we are happy to extend and invitation to Grades 7 & 8 students who are members of the St. Bonaventure Parish and who attend schools other than St. Bonaventure to participate in the contest. This year s finalists competition will be held at St. Bonaventure Parish Hall on Thursday, February 14 from 12:30 2:45 pm. The winner of the competition will go on to compete in the regional contest which this year is being hosted by St. Bonaventure Parish in the Main Hall on Sunday, March 3 at 1:30 pm. Please note: For students from schools other than St. Bonaventure s, a preliminary competition will be held on Monday evening, February 11 th in the Francis Room of the Parish Hall in order to determine possible placement as a finalist in the parish-level contest. For contest details and rules please email Waveney at waveneyduarte@rogers.com Community Life And Now, A Word from Our Pastor This week, in our Catholic Christian tradition, we will mark the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, when Simeon called Jesus a Light to the Nations. It is a feast of light during the dark days of winter. NEXT WEEKEND BRING A CANDLE FROM HOME TO MASS WITH YOU. We will bless your candles during the Liturgy. When you light your candles at home, may they remind you that you, too, were presented in the temple on the day you were Baptized. May Jesus be light to your hearts and brightness to your spirits. Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick After all Masses of February 9-10, we will offer the Sacrament of Anointing to those who are seriously ill, elderly or anticipating surgery. Through this Sacrament our parish continues the healing ministry of Jesus. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27 Time Accepting Responsibility Jesus unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
