God s Hero Bible Study- Day 1 What Makes a Hero? Power Verse: Mt 17:20 if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. Super Powers: Faith, Courage Bible Story: David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17) he Philistine army had gathered for war against Israel. The two armies faced each other, camped for battle on opposite sides of a steep valley. A Philistine giant measuring over nine feet tall and wearing full armor came out each day for forty days, mocking and challenging the Israelites to fight. His name was Goliath. Saul, the King of Israel, and the whole army were terrified of Goliath. One day David, the youngest son of Jesse, was sent to the battle lines by his father to bring back news of his brothers. David was probably just a young teenager at the time. While there, David heard Goliath shouting his daily defiance and he saw the great fear stirred within the men of Israel. David responded, "Who is this Philistine that he should defy the armies of God?" So David volunteered to fight Goliath. It took some persuasion, but King Saul finally agreed to let David fight against the giant. Dressed in his simple tunic, carrying his shepherd's staff, slingshot and a pouch full of stones, David approached Goliath. The giant cursed at him, hurling threats and insults. David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied... today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air... and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel... it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give all of you into our hands." As Goliath moved in for the kill, David reached into his bag and slung one of his stones at Goliath's head. Finding a hole in the armor, the stone sank into the giant's forehead and he fell face down on the ground. David then took Goliath's sword, killed him and then cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. So the Israelites pursued, chasing and killing them and plundering their camp.

God s Hero Bible Study- Day 2 Who Me? A Super Hero?! Power Verse: Acts 2:21 and it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved. Super Powers: Responsibility, Courage, Honesty, Bible Story : Acts 16 (Paul, Silas, and the Jailer) aul went on a long trip going from city to city to preach about Jesus, the Son of God. He took with him a man named Silas who was also a preacher. Eventually they reached the city of Philipi. Not very many people had heard about the true God in Philippi. Most of the people there prayed to idols. Every day Paul and Silas went out to preach about Jesus. This made some of the leaders of the city very angry and Paul and Silas were put into the deepest part of the prison with their feet locked up tightly. During the night Paul and Silas sang songs of praise to God. Everyone in the prison listened quietly to Paul and Silas. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, an earthquake shook the prison. The locks on the prisoners feet were loosened and the doors popped open. The jailer knew he could be punished with death if any of his prisoners escaped. He was afraid that his prisoners would get out before he could lock them up again. He took out his sword to kill himself, but Paul called out, Don t harm yourself! See, we are all here! The jailer kneeled down and begged, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Paul said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be baptized, you and your family! Even though it was the middle of the night, the jailer took Paul and Silas to his own house. He got his whole family up to hear about Jesus, the Savior from sin. How happy the jailer was to know what God had done for him! That very night the jailer and all of his family were baptized. He gave Paul and Silas food to eat and washed and bandaged their bloody wounds. Then the jailer took them back to the prison before daylight. The next day, when they were released from prison, many believers came to see Paul and Silas. Paul and Silas urged these new Christians to keep on trusting in Jesus. Find Your Super Power: Why were Paul & Silas thrown in prison? Why were Paul and Silas able to sing joyfully while in pain and locked up? How did the jailer feel when he discovered the open doors and broken chains? How did he feel when Paul announced they were all still there? Was the jailer a hero? Why did the jailer asked to be saved? Have you asked to be saved? How did Paul answer the jailer? What must you do to be saved?

God s Hero Bible Study- Day 3 Discovering My Super Powers Power Verse: Romans 12:6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. to be used in proportion to our faith. Super Powers: Loyalty, Friendship, Team Work Bible Study: Daniel 1 Prisoners in Babylon ing Nebuchadnezzar captured several groups of Jews. He made them into slaves and forced them to live in Babylon. Among the first group taken were four young men named Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. King Nebuchadnezzar had ordered that the best-looking, strongest and smartest boys should be put in a special school. There they would be taught for three years by Babylonian teachers. After that, the best of the best would get to work for the king himself. The Babylonians made these boys study the history and books and language of Babylon. And they gave them Babylonian names. Daniel became Belteshazzar, Hananiah became Shadrach, Mishael was called Meshach and Azariah was renamed Abednego. King Nebuchadnezzar ordered the boys to eat only the best of foods. They were supposed to eat plenty of fresh vegetables and meat, as well as drink wine every day. There was only one problem, though. The meat and wine which the Babylonians gave to Daniel and his friends was not the sort of food God's people were allowed to have. Daniel went to Ashpenaz, the king s chief. He pointed to the food on the table and said, "Please sir, I've come to ask your help. I can't follow the king's orders. We can t eat this food." Ashpenaz looked at the boy standing before him. God had warmed the heart of Ashpenaz toward Daniel. As he listened, he already knew he would help this boy, no matter what the cost. "But Daniel, you must eat. If the king finds out I haven't fed you as he ordered, he'll have me killed. What will I do when he sees your faces looking paler and thinner than those of the other boys?" Daniel was quiet for a moment. Then he smiled, "I know! Could you give me and my friends ten days? Feed us only vegetables and give us only water to drink. When ten days are up, see if we look better or worse than the other boys who get the king's special food. After that you can decide what we should eat." Ashpenaz agreed. For ten days Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael andazariah ate only vegetables and drank only water. At the end of that time the four boys did exercises in front of Ashpenaz. Ashpenaz could not believe his eyes! Daniel and his friends had gained more weight than the other boys! Not only that, their eyes sparkled. Their smiles shone. The other boys were out of breath, while Daniel and his friends still had plenty of energy left!

Ashpenaz told the guard that for the rest of the three years the boys could eat only vegetables and drink only water. When three years were over, Ashpenaz brought the boys to King Nebuchadnezzar. The king tested them on all they had learned. He asked them many hard questions. Of all the boys there, the best and wisest answers were always given by Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. So the king himself chose them to be his advisers. Super Powers The following crossword puzzle is built of Super Powers we all can have. God s Hero Bible Study- Day 4 Why Be A Superhero? Power Verse: 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIrV) Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young. Set an example for the believers in what you say and in how you live. Also set an example in how you love and in what you believe. Show the believers how to be pure Super Powers: Faith, Self Discipline, Perseverance, Compassion Bible Story: The Life of Timothy (1Timothy 4, Acts 14, Acts 16) hile growing up in Lystra Timothy was taught Many stories about Jewish heroes of long ago. His mother Eunice and Grandmother Lois were some of the only Christian Jews in his town and were very serous about his education. Timothy s father was a Greek and also one of the educated men of Lystra. Timothy loved to listen to stories of his father s travels and dreamed of traveling one day himself. Timothy learned much about scripture while living with his family. One day a couple of men came to town preaching and teaching about Jesus one of the men said People of Lystra hear me! I am here to tell you the good news of Jesus the Son of God. These men were named Paul and Barnabus and while they were preaching they stopped and healed a man that had been crippled all his life! Surely living in Lystra Timothy either witnessed or heard the story about these men. Wow that was exciting thought Timothy! He really wanted to meet this man called Paul. But Jews from another town stirred up trouble and the people started throwing rocks at Paul and Barnabus and drove them from the city. Everyone thought Paul had been killed but the believers helped Paul and Barnabus and they were soon on their way to other towns sharing the good news about Jesus. Timothy and his family heard many things about Paul and looked forward to meeting him some day and hearing about his journeys. Nearly ten years later Paul returned along with another missionary called Silas to encourage the churches that were started when he was there before. Timothy and his friends listened as Paul told of his journey of sailing to Antioch, and traveling to Jerusalem. Paul was glad to back with his friends and in Lystra and he spent a lot of time talking with the new Christians and teaching them. Timothy became a special friend to Paul during this time. Paul and Silas were impressed with young Timothy because he was strong in his faith and educated in the word. The Christians in Lystra wanted to help Paul. Paul told them they had been praying for a new helper and He suggested that Timothy would a good choice if he were ready. Timothy was ready. Many people in Lystra and in Iconium had learned about Jesus from Timothy and he had many good recommendations. Timothy told Paul he needed to pray before making his decision. Timothy desperately wanted to travel but he also wanted to be sure this was what God wanted for him. Timothy prayed by himself and with his family and soon knew that God wanted him to go with Paul. Timothy was sad to leave his family and the people who loved him but at the same time he was happy that God has chosen him to help tell people about Jesus. Before Timothy left the elders had a special meeting for Timothy and

placed their hands on him and prayed for him. The believers of Lystra also committed to pray for Paul, Barnabus, and Timothy. Timothy traveled with Paul and in each town they came to they would meet with the local group of Christians. Paul would read a letter from the Christians in Jerusalem and answer questions and teach. Timothy watched and learned how to tell people about Jesus. During their travels a doctor named Luke joined their group of missionaries. Luke s faith and kindness to others was a good example for young timothy. Paul along with Timothy and the rest of the missionary group were the first to visit Macedonia and tell about the Good news of Jesus. They found some believers who gladly helped them but soon there was trouble and Paul and Silas were put in Jail. The missionaries moved on to other cities but trouble continued to follow and Paul decided to leave the group with the hope they could continue the work. By this time timothy had become more than just a helper. He was doing the work of a missionary pastor. Timothy also took letters from Paul to Christians in other towns. Timothy had become a missionary and was ready to work on his own. There were many believers in Ephesus and Paul and Timothy knew they needed a pastor to help them be strong and faithful when trouble would come. As the Christians in Ephesus prayed they realized that Timothy was the man God wanted to lead them. Being a pastor was not easy for Timothy. He was young only 20 or 21 years old and was often criticized about being too young to be a pastor. Timothy knew it was up to him to set an example of how a Christian should live. Paul and Timothy kept in touch and wrote letters to each other. Two of these letters are found in our Bible 1 & 2 Timothy. In 1 Timothy 4:12 Paul told Timothy. Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young. Set an example for the believers in what you say and in how you live. Also set an example in how you love and in what you believe. Show the believers how to be pure. FIND YOUR SUPERPOWER What do you remember about Timothy? Who first taught Timothy about God? How can Timothy be considered God s Hero?
