May 20, 2018 THE CHURCH OF THE RED ROCKS The Rev. Dr. Cindy Parker, Pastor A Stephen Ministry Congregation An Open and Affirming Congregation Pentecost 8:30 and 10:30AM Pentecost Sunday celebrates the animating and sustaining presence of God s Spirit within the church. Perhaps it is for this reason that Pentecost is often celebrated as the "birthday of the Christian church. " The Spirit gives the church its mission and the power to undertake it. As you look into the future, what mission is the Spirit giving to you and to our church? How will you pour out the Spirit'? Prelude "Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling" arr. Wilbur Held *Hymn of Celebration! #84 "This Is the Day" Welcome to The Church of the Red Rocks! Pastor: Where we believe no matter who you are or where you are on life s journey, People: You are welcome here! Call to Worship Leader: It was a sad time. The disciples had gathered in Jerusalem for the Pentecost festival. But they wondered: what was the point? Jesus had died. Jesus had risen. Jesus had left them again. They were alone. Confused. Unsure of what to do-or where to go-next. Suddenly, the room was filled with a great, indescribable sound. Some said it was like the wind. Some said it was like a great fire. All of them knew that it was God s Spirit. They were not alone. The Spirit of their Creator God, The Spirit of the Risen Christ, was with them-and would be with themforever. All: Come, it is time to worship God! Opening Prayer Reaching Out & Building Beloved Community We joyfully welcome our confirmands to our church family- Emma and Dylan Beattie, and Gena Ryan

Please see the Canyon Echo for Pick-a-Party information! Next week s scripture reading: May 27, 2018-Trinity Sunday-Last week we celebrated the gift of the Holy Spirit to God s children. This week we celebrate the interrelationship of Creator, Redeemer and Holy Spirit. How is this possible? God as threein-one? In his letter to the church in Rome, (Romans 8:12-17) Paul writes of this relationship and our part in it, we do not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but we have received a spirit of adoption. (v. 15) What does it mean to be one of God s children? God is still speaking with our message, Adopted by God. Narthex Art "Cactus Garden" is now displayed in our Narthex. It is the latest work of Norma Gibson, a member of CRR and well-known artist.

What is the #1 reason people join our church family? When people attend our new member gatherings Pastor Cindy asks them to fill out a questionnaire asking them to identify the top three reasons they decided to join the church. The #1 reason?? Relationships! People are attracted to our church because of the friendliness of our church family! The Growth Ministry has been looking and praying for ways to continue to develop those relationships and we think God has shown us the answer! We are starting a pilot program called Caring Connections are we are looking for a few men and women to help us out! How? We would like to get those who are interested in connecting with others to join us in Classroom A on May 31 st at 10:00am. We plan to divide up the directory with each connector (that s you!) taking 10 families. The connector with be responsible for checking in with their people every month or so, especially if they notice anything unusual (that person hasn t been in church for a while, etc.) That s it. You don t need any special skills, just a willingness to pray for your families and connect with them! If you think God might be calling you to assist with this ministry please join us on May 31 st! We are praying for you!
