Whitworth University Archives Whitworth University Archives 300 W. Hawthorne Road Spokane, WA 99251 Telephone: 509-777-4751 jhauck@whitworth.edu This collection is open for research use English Funding for encoding this finding aid was provided through a grant awarded by the National Endowment of the Humanities. Historical Note The Spokane Christian Coalition was organized in 1972 in place of the Greater Spokane Council of Churches. Since that time the organization has spread to include the Catholic Church in a direct participating role rather than as a neutral observer. It exists primarily to serve in the ecumenical Christian community by linking together congregations to perform tasks that otherwise could not be accomplished, e.g. "Operation Night Walk" in the downtown area of Spokane which gently confronts and aids the homeless. The Coalition networks with several other agencies in the Spokane area. Some of these are noted in the folios of this file. In 1994, to avoid confusion with other agencies, the Coalition adopted a new name: The Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries. The folios listed herein are rich in resource materials for clergy and laity involved in serving the poor and disfranchised in the Spokane community.
