Rotary s 4 Way Test of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? TRUTH or FACT. 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? JUSTICE. 3. Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships? FRIENDLINESS. 4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned? HELPFULNESS. Rotary has used this 4 Way test as a basic tenant of what we stand for many years. Back in 1932, Herbert J. Taylor, developed the test as a way of saving his bankrupt company. He needed to relook at how the company did business and find a way of developing something which his competitors would not have a similar competitive weapon. The competitive weapon involved Character, Dependability and Service Mindedness of the personnel. The company had a code of ethics, but was too long and nobody took any notice of it as they could not remember it. We need to develop a simpler standard, which would not tell the employees what they must do, but ask them questions which would make it possible for them to find out whether their proposed plans, policies, statements or actions were right or wrong. All personnel were asked to memorise the 4 Way test and words such as better, best, greatest and finest disappeared from the companies advertising. Herbert Taylor found that by a simple change from telling people to asking them to look at what they were doing made the change necessary to regaining the community s confidence and sales gradually increased to the extent that the company s misfortune was gradually turned around. Putting it simply, it s about credibility and not making enemies. Enemies are a waste of time and serve no useful purpose! Rotary is more than a Service Organisation it s a way of life. Thus the importance of the 4 Way Test.
