THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH A Catholic comes to Mass on the Lord's Day in the Lord's House. There s no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to review the Ten Commandments. Today, we discuss the Third Commandment Keep Holy the Sabbath. The celebration of the sacrament of Holy Eucharist or Mass is the way in which members of the Catholic Church join together in prayer and are spiritually nourished in the earthly journey to be disciples of Jesus Christ. As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. All those who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another. As Psalm 19 proclaims: The law of the LORD is perfect, / refreshing the soul (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gift, to be received from God with joy. TODAY S READINGS First Reading God gives the law through Moses (Exodus 20:1-17 [1-3, 7-8, 12-17]) or Exodus 17:3-7. Psalm Lord, you have the words of everlasting life (Psalm 19) or Psalm 95. Second Reading We proclaim Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 1:22-25) or Romans 5:1-2, 5-8. Gospel Many began to believe in Jesus name when they saw the signs He was doing (John 2:13-25) or John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42]. I, the LORD, am your God... You shall not have other gods besides me. Exodus 20:2a, 3 SPECIAL LENTEN SCHEDULE Daily Mass Monday Friday 6:45 & 8:30 AM Saturday Mass 8:30 AM Eucharistic Adoration Every Friday morning from 9:00 11:00 AM Stations of the Cross Every Friday evening at 7:30 PM Confessions Every Saturday from 4:00 4:45 PM Reconciliation Monday, March 26 Individual confessions 4:00 7:00 PM REDISCOVERING MASS Mass is not about whom you sit next to. It s not about which Priest says Mass. It s not about what you wear or who is there. Mass is not about the music. It s not even about the preaching. Mass is about gathering as a community to give thanks to God for all the blessings He fills our lives with. It is about receiving the body and blood of Christ, not just physically, but spiritually. Perhaps you have been receiving the Eucharist physically every Sunday for your whole life. Next Sunday, prepare yourself be conscious of the marvel, the wonder, the mystery, and receive the Eucharist spiritually. Rediscover Catholicism, Matthew Kelly. During the Lenten Season, why not find time to Rediscover Mass. Here at St. Catharine s, we have weekday morning masses at 6:45 AM and 8:30 AM. GOD IS NEAR Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. Isaiah 55:6 Lent is a true opportunity to enter deeply into the mystery of the goodness and love of God. In this holy season, the Church invites us to learn to know the Lord Jesus ever better, and to live the faith in a consistent way with a lifestyle that expresses God s mercy. It is a commitment that we are called to take on in order to offer to those we meet the concrete sign of God s closeness. My life, my attitude, the way of going through life, must really be a concrete sign of the fact that God is close to us. Small gestures of love, tenderness, and care make people feel that the Lord is with us. In all these situations we convey God s mercy through our life-giving commitment, which witness to our faith in Christ. We must always bring God s tender love and mercy bringing it to others, to those who are in need, to those who have anguish in their hearts, to those who are sad. We must always approach them with God s love and mercy.

MARY OUR PERFECT LENTEN COMPANION In celebrating Lent, it is good to recall the teaching of the Second Vatican Council that the Church honors with special love the Blessed Mary, Mother of God, who is joined by an inseparable bond to the saving work of her Son. In her, the Church holds up and admires the most excellent fruit of the redemption, and joyfully contemplates, as in a faultless image that which she herself desires and hopes wholly to be (Sacrosanctum Concilium, No. 13). Mary is our perfect companion for Lent, and Lent is a perfect time to deepen our love, knowledge and veneration of the Mother of God. On Ash Wednesday, Pope Francis highlighted the special protection and help of the Blessed Virgin for the journey of Lent: On this journey, we want to invoke with special trust the protection and help of the Virgin Mary: May she, who was the first to believe in Christ, accompany us in our days of intense prayer and penance, so that we might come to celebrate, purified and renewed in spirit, the great Paschal Mystery of her Son. At the wedding feast of Cana, Mary told the servers, Do whatever He tells you (Jn 2:5). In a similar way, Mary directs us all to be faithful to Christ, her Divine Son. If we wish to draw closer to Christ during Lent, there is no better way than by entrusting ourselves to Mary, our spiritual Mother. THE MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions, but, in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen. PARISH SOCIAL ACTIVITIES MIRACULOUS MEDAL SHRINE & MUSEUM IN PHILADELPHIA Join us on this one-day trip, Wednesday, August 22 nd, the Feast of the Queenship of Mary, to the Miraculous Medal Shrine in Philadelphia. Cost is $60 which includes a boxed lunch, coach bus, coffee and breakfast treats in the morning. Bus will leave at 6:45 AM. Please call Joe Onativia at (646) 648-0823 for tickets. SAINTS PERPETUA AND FELICITY FEAST DAY, MARCH 7 When my father in his affection for me was trying to turn me from my purpose by arguments and thus weaken my faith, I said to him, Do you see this vessel waterpot, or whatever it may be? Can it be called by any other name than what it is? No, he replied. So, also, I cannot call myself by any other name than what I am a Christian. So writes Perpetua: a young, beautiful, well-educated, noblewoman of Carthage in North Africa, mother of an infant son. Perpetua s mother was a Christian and her father a pagan. He continually pleaded with her to deny her faith. She refused and was imprisoned at age twenty-two. St. Perpetua kept a diary during her last days, while she awaited her execution. Her diary, along with an eyewitness s account of her death, is one of the oldest, most reliable histories of a martyr s sufferings. This account was passed down to encourage other Christians to witness to the world with their lives to teach others that greater than life itself is knowing Jesus and being loyal to Him. Perpetua s account records the events that took place in Carthage in the year 202, when the Emperor Severus issued an anti-christian law forbidding anyone to be baptized and become a Christian. At that time twenty-twoyear-old Perpetua was a catechumen, studying to become a Christian. Perpetua was arrested along with four other catechumens, including Felicity, her slave woman, who was about to give birth to a child. Despite threats of persecution and death, Perpetua and Felicity, and their companions, refused to renounce their Christian faith. All were tried and sentenced to be thrown to the wild beasts in the amphitheater during a national holiday. While they were awaiting death, Perpetua and her companions were baptized. Shortly before the scheduled execution, Felicity gave birth to a baby girl. On the day of their execution, the martyrs left their prison joyfully, as though they were on their way to Heaven and entered the arena. Perpetua and Felicity were beheaded; the others were killed by wild beasts. Today, these women are mentioned in the first Eucharistic Prayer. Saint Perpetua, pray for us. Saint Felicity, pray for us.

NEXT WEEK S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES Next week, our Parish will take up a collection for Catholic Relief Services. This collection supports six Catholic agencies that work to provide services including advocating for immigrants, providing humanitarian aid in the wake of natural disasters, resettling displaced individuals, and working for increased peace. The Tabernacle Candle will burn before the Blessed Sacrament the week of March 4 In Loving Memory of Catherine O Brien Donated by Nancy Fascelli For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. FIRST PENANCE SATURDAY, MARCH 10 th, 10:00 AM This coming Saturday, March 10 th, the Second Grade class of our Parish Religious Education Program will receive their First Penance. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against You whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with Your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ, suffered and died for us. In His name, my God have mercy. Amen.
