WORSHIP CELEBRATION February 17, 2019 Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany 10:15 a.m. Centering Words Those who place their trust in God are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season and with leaves that are ever green. Identifies time to stand, as you are able. PRELUDE Prelude in G Major J.S. Bach Jennifer Yang INTROIT Come, We That Love the Lord Sarah A Michal Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known; join in a song with sweet accord, and thus surround the throne. CALL TO WORSHIP Rev. Dr. Brandon Cho Leader: Blessed are those who trust God, whose trust is in the Lord. People: They are like trees planted by water, sending out roots by the stream. Leader: They have no fear of summer s heat, nor do they wither in the sun. People: In the year of drought they are not anxious, for their lives bear the fruit of righteousness. Leader: Come to the waters of life, all who trust in the Lord. People: We have come to worship and send forth our roots into the streams of God s living water. OPENING HYMN Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee No. 89 OPENING PRAYER (in unison) Kevin Powell God of joy and grace, bless us this day with lives filled with love, caring, generosity, and deep, abiding hope. We pray that your kingdom will dwell among all people, and that they may be instruments of your love and your grace. Open our hearts with the joy of our salvation as we worship you in spirit and truth. Amen. (Please be seated.) CALL TO CONFESSION Jack Scharf PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) Gentle guide, loving guardian, heal our foolish ways. We yearn to be like trees planted beside living waters, but we often forget that you are the source of life. Our hearts seek the ways of your Spirit and the waters of life, but our footsteps lead us into arid, desert sands. This is not your hope and plan for us. Forgive us. Turn us again to your Spirit and help us to walk with you as your children. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. SILENT REFLECTION WORDS OF ASSURANCE Leader: God s grace endures forever. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven and made whole. People: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven and made whole. Thanks be to God.

THE CHURCH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED TOMORROW, FEBRUARY 18 in observance of Presidents Day. Lass dich nur nichts nicht dauren Today s choral anthem has a unique compositional structure it s a perfect double canon at the ninth. One common canon (or round ) that most people are familiar with is Row, Row, Row Your Boat. The melody is repeated and overlapped by being sung at slightly different times, which creates consonant vertical harmony. A double canon has two different melodies, each with its own echo. A canon is considered perfect if no adjustments are made to the individual melodies to make the overall harmonic sound line up. This canon is at the ninth, which means that, rather than starting on exactly the same note, the echo of each melody begins an interval of a ninth (an octave plus a step) away from the original melody. A ninth is a fairly dissonant interval, but the way Brahms structured the individual melodies of this canon creates only consonance and those dissonances pleasing to 19 th - century musical sensibilities. Because the individual melodies are a bit more complex than in most canons, you may not be able to hear each echo but the overall effect is gorgeous, and knowledge of the intricate structure of this piece of music may increase your appreciation for that tower of the Romantic Period, Johannes Brahms.
