J UNE, 20 12 Z i o n @ v i s t a b e a m. c o m W w w. z i o n s c o t t s b l u f f. c o m News from Zion News from Zion Z i o n e v a n g e l i c a l c h u r c h ~ S c o t t s b l u f f, N e b r a s k a Communion will be served June 3rd following the 10:30 service. F ro m t he pa s to r s d e s k... A Father s Role Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 NIV Summer at last and it looks like this year we will again be able to enjoy our Daddy and Me fishing day at Bolzer s Pond! I know my kids look forward to it every year and several have mentioned over the last year how they missed the event last year when the water was high and the banks of the pond were crumbling and we had to cancel. Those moments make memories and life can be full of such special times if we will but seize the opportunities. Like mom, dad has a special place in a child s heart and as we see in the Scripture above he plays a special role. In marriage we men are called upon to Protect, Provide for, Nurture and Cherish our wives and in fatherhood we are called on to P l e a s e Ta k e n o t e... Mission Prayer Partners for JUNE, 2012 3 - Bruce & Julie Powell/ Wycliffe 10 - Vacation Bible School 17 - Camp Rock 24 - Pastor Bhatti & family/ Voice of the Martyrs Discipline, Direct, Train and Instruct our children with the emphasis on training and instructing. Training and instruction is hands on learning like learning how to bait a hook it s a process of the child watching as dad does it, listening as dad explains it and then doing under a dad s supervision until he or she can do it on their own. What s true about fishing is also true in matters of faith. What you show your children through your own actions, dad, will weigh heavily in your child s own future spiritual life. According to God s Word, it s good for mom to get kids to church and teach them to pray and get into God s Word but it s actually dad s responsibility take them to God s house and to God in prayer, teach them from the Word and to be in the word yourself. You don t have to be an expert, just be yourself. Prioritize God in your life and God will be a priority in your child s life as well. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL June 11th - 15th/9:00-12:00 Ages 3 thru 6th Grade Help needed with snacks! Sign up at the Welcome Center. Get your newsletter first and in color if you receive it via email. Page 4 ~ AWANA NEWS ~ Most of this month s article will be thanks and congratulations as we celebrated the clubbers accomplishments for the 2011-12 club year at our closing awards program Jamboree on Sunday, May 6 th. First of all, though, congratulations to our April Clubbers of the Month: Sparks Ashtyn Silverman & Cameron Meyer; T&T Anna Schick & Joseph Libert and Trek Josiah Ashford. Proud of you for finishing strong, Clubbers!!! For the second half of the club year, we held a contest for the clubbers in Sparks, T&T and Trek. A ticket was placed in a baggie for each section that each clubber recited from January on needless to say, there were a BUNCH of tickets in the baggies! The winners of the drawings were awarded $100 in Shares to buy off the Shareboard after Jamboree. Congratulations to: Sparks winner Nathan Schick; T&T Girls winner Alexandra Fuentes; T&T Boys winner James Cawley and Trek winner Spencer Riddick. Hope you had a fun shopping spree!!! Jamboree ~ Unfortunately, at our closing awards program we are unable to recognize the hard work of every clubber most of those awards are given as the clubber earns them during regular club meetings. The milestone awards are held and presented at Jamboree. Congratulations to the following clubbers on their accomplishments: Sparky Plaque (completion of 3 Sparky handbooks): Anessa Mehling & Spencer Riddick; Excellence Award (completion of 2 T&T handbooks): MarLee Neu; T&T Challenge Award (completion of 3 T&T handbooks): Kimberleigh Cawley, Breanna Deem, Halley Schanaman, Quinton Janecek and Aaron Reed; Timothy Award (completion of 4 T&T handbooks): Anna Schick; Trek Milestone Award (completion of first Trek handbook): Josiah Ashford, Rebecca Boyd, Gunnar Buchhammer, Tiersa Darley, Megan Gifford and Austin Rhamy and Meritorious Award (completion of four T&T handbooks and two Trek handbooks): Cooper Buchhammer, Megan Gifford, Jacob Pieper, Spencer Riddick and Ben Stricker. Several awards that we have added that are exclusive to our club are: T&T Approved Workman Trophy - Kimberleigh Cawley & James Cawley (Kimberleigh and James each recited a LENGTHY review of their handbook from memory); Trek Approved Workman Trophy Megan Gifford (Megan completed 3 Trek handbooks in 1½ years only 2 are required for the Trek program); T&T Honor Clubber Alexandra Fuentes, James Cawley and Micah Schick (boys tied) and Trek Honor Clubber Megan Gifford. (The Honor Clubber trophies are special because it is a vote by the clubbers peers.) Last of all, the Spirit of AWANA Award: Mickie Janecek. (This is an award given to a staff member chosen by the AWANA Commander.) We concluded the program with a skit done by several members of the staff... We are AWANA leaders and this is what we ll be, but if we can t be leaders a is what I ll be! I loved the newest addition to this skit a rapper! Great job crumping, Martha! After the program, we gathered in the Ministry Center for ice cream sundaes and root beer floats, fellowship and clubbers buying off the shareboard. A BIG THANKS to the staff and clubbers for a great club year!!! THIS SUMMER clubbers that completed a handbook or the equivalent of a handbook can watch for a flyer in the mail about our annual pool reward party at a local swimming pool. LOOKING AHEAD ~ As I mentioned in last month s article and at Jamboree, the 2012-13 club year will be our 30 th year of AWANA at Zion Church so we will need to do some special activities to celebrate! Please pray for the safety of our clubbers and their families over the summer as well as the leaders that will be headed to college in August and will not be returning on staff. Last of all, pray for the staff, new LIT s/potential staff that will be joining us next club year that we will all be refreshed/renewed over the summer and ready to return in the Fall! I cannot thank you enough for your faithful prayers, encouragement, financial support, etc.!!! Thanking God that HE IS IN CONTROL Have a great summer!!! Cheryl Rose, Commander

CIRCLE OF PRAISE: The Circle of Praise met May 25. Our hosts for the evening were Pat Stricker, Joyce Johnson and Jerry & Carolyn Nash. We enjoyed a delicious baked potato bar. There were 32 people in attendance. Special guests were Bob Hessler and Brutus, his bloodhound. Bob gave a presentation on the job that Brutus does to help find missing persons. It was very interesting and enjoyed by all. The group held a short meeting after the meal and talked about the trip to the Post Playhouse on July 21. We will meet at the church at 9 am Saturday morning. Please pay Teri Erdman by Sunday, June 3. 3 The cost is $14, not $12 as initially thought. Hosting for the Friday, June 29th meeting will be Emma, Lydia, Ruth, Verna and Mary Lou. We closed with the Lord s Prayer. Teri Erdman Ladies Guild: The Ladies Guild of Zion Church met for their May meeting with a Mother s Day Banquet on May 6th. It was well attended with many mothers and relatives attending. The food was also great with many kinds to choose from. Entertainment by Ron Charles was appreciated by all. The men of the church were our servers and did a great job. Thank you gentlemen. A good time was had by all. Thank to all who helped. Helen Maier, Guild Secretary The Mother Daughter Banquet Committee of Helen Maier, Barb Steffensen and Wanda Henkel wish to express our thanks to all who helped with the Mother/Daughter Banquet. Thanks to: Bridget Schick, Linda Peterson, and Janae Griess, Teri Erdman and Darlene Robertus; ALL the ladies that brought the great food to share (Zion has the BEST cooks!!); to the men of all ages who so willingly worked to help with the service and the clean up; to Ron Charles for helping by letting us use his sound system and to Ron Charles and Tone Buettner for sharing their talents. We thank the ladies of ALL ages for attending our time of celebrating the blessings from God for our relationships with our mothers and daughters. MISSIONS CORNER: The Challenge of Missions: Prayer Page 5 The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into His harvest. Luke 10:2 Christ s heart was moved with compassion when He saw the multitudes scattered abroad as sheep having no shepherd, as He told seventy disciples to preach the Gospel in every city and village. Here is the beginning of a great missionary movement. This is a vivid view of the world s truly great harvest of immense extent. He says now is harvest time, now is time for reaping and because harvest time is always an urgent swiftly passing season. It will not wait for our convenience. It must be reaped or it will rot in the field. This world is ripe for the reapers of His kingdom or the kingdom of darkness. Now is a crisis age. The great reaper, Death, is mowing down the generations at a rate of more than fifty seven million a year. And if these souls are to hear of Jesus they must hear at once. It is almost impossible to realize the vastness of earth s Christless million that are dying and moving into darkness at a rate of 155,000 every day. It is like a mighty city blotted out every twenty-four hours by a calamity greater than earthquake or fire. This harvest is great in extent and value. These are immortal souls created in the image of God, destined to live forever under God s grace because of faith in Christ s sacrifice or in utter darkness and eternal suffering. It is a task impossible to man due to his deep love of sin, the power of evil habit and natural corruption conformed by ages of degradation and strengthened by ten thousand selfish and earthily motives derived in the power of Satan to lead to reject the Gospel. The work is super human. Our hearts fall back on God and are relieved when we hear the Master say Pray because this is a task too great for us; God must undertake it. The great need of work is suggested by the Master s language Pray ye the Lord of the harvest that He would send forth laborers into His harvest The Greek word for send literally means thrust forth with earnest and intensity. The more we reach the Christless harvest with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Lord s coming is hastened in our time! Such a thrusting forth implies the breaking down of barriers, the breaking up of selfishness, stagnancy, letting loose of the Spirit of love and Christian enthusiasm amid all ranks and classes of the Church of God to bring the freshness, the self-sacrifice of the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit. What a worthy object of prayer! The whole bent of human nature is against the needed power to accomplish this vast movement from selfishness. We need to abandon ourselves and our resources to God s service and use, for this to occur. For God can send such a tidal wave of love, power and self-denial that can break up these icy barriers and infuse us with holy zeal through every channel of Christian life and service. Oh, for such a day to dawn! The source for which this need is to be supplied is provided through believing prayer. No means can accomplish this task without prayer. As we look at the overwhelming millions under the power of sensuality and grossest wickedness we cry (Continued on page 6)

Page 6 (Continued from page 5) out Who is sufficient for these things? Thank God we have the privilege of prayer through the power of the Holy Spirit, this same power that raised Jesus from the grave. Prayer for the calling of workers, trained in His Word, prayer that will supply the means. God can reach the pocketbooks that we cannot; He can reach the church in ways that we may never see. Prayer can remove the difficulties and open the doors. Prayer has opened almost every land to the Gospel. All He asks of us is that we fully trust Him and that we step forth in obedience to His will and in confidence in His care. Prayer will break down the prejudices and open minds and hearts to the Gospel. We can pray over a map of the world and daily traverse the world through prayer for God s Word to move across nations to cause the walls of resistance to fall down like the walls of Jericho. The Challenge of Missions by Rev. Simpson. Linda Peterson, Mission Secretary SUNDAY SCHOOL: We would like to congratulate all of our graduates. We are so proud of you, whether it be a masters degree, college or high school diploma. We have enjoyed watching all of you grow up, and we have enjoyed you in Sunday School, Bible School, the Christmas program and the Easter Egg Hunt. We trust that God will guide all of your future plans and we will be praying for all of you. Please mark your calendars for VBS. It is getting closer: June 11-15, 9:00 am -12:00 ages 3-6th grade (just finished 6th grade). We certainly would appreciate any treats that are brought in and because of allergies, we do ask for nothing with nuts. We can always use volunteers to help. This is a fun time for our kids to learn about Jesus. We will be doing a sports theme and have many challenges for the kids. And now from the mouth of babes: A little boy forgot his lines in a Sunday School presentation. His mother was in the front row to prompt him. She gestured and formed the words silently with her lips, but it did not help. Her son's memory was blank. Finally she leaned forward and whispered the cue, "I am the Light of the world." The child beamed and with great feeling and a loud clear voice said, "My mother is the light of the world." God Bless! Sharon, Robin, Deb FUN UNDER THE SUN Sponsored by the Valley Evangelical Pastors Fellowship Sunday, June 24th Watch for additional Information in the bulletin.
