This month will be designated, Gentleness Month. I will be preaching a sermon series entitled, How To Win Friends and Influence People Through Gentleness. Gentleness has indeed been the forgotten virtue. Phil Ware will help us this month to understand gentleness. The Forgotten Virtue By most accounts, life is extremely busy for most of us. Productivity is the bottom line. Stress, financial concerns, work output, and making things happen push us to cut through the fat and to get the work out. Being rude, untactful, brutally honest, and harsh become virtues that need no apology if they help to get done what needs to be done. Courtesy, affability, and tenderness are shoved aside for traits that get more immediate results. In this environment, gentleness has become the forgotten virtue. In fact, gently dealing with situations and people are often judged as being weak, or unwilling to confront difficult circumstances and people. One of the challenges of being the people of God in a rude and harsh world is to reflect the character of our God, who with strength confronts sin while dealing with us sinners with gentleness and grace. Yes, there is a time when God s patience is exhausted and he deals harshly with sinners. Most of the time, however, God repeatedly and gently extends his grace to redeem and save. His goal is to transform us and make us holy, not shame, blame, and condemn us. His desire is to comfort us and to restore us, not to push us away or to shove us aside so he can spend time with more productive creatures. God calls us to reflect this holy character in our daily lives, regardless of the decadence or harshness of the culture around us (1 Peter 1:15-16). God wants us to be fruitful and productive in our holiness (2 Peter 1:8). Part of that productivity and character, however, is dealing with each other with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15), showing family kindness and love (2 Peter 1:6-8). Continue on page 2.. Page 2 Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church The Word of the Month By Pastor Michael Eaton Gently dealing with those who are broken is a trait of God himself, as he gently deals with his people who are most vulnerable gently and tenderly (Isaiah 40:11). Gentleness is a mark of the Spirit s work in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23) and a trait we show in our dealings with all people because of the Lord s presence in our lives (Philippians 4:25). As God s chosen people, who have been loved by the Creator of the universe and graced with his mercy and kindness, we are to clothe ourselves with gentleness in our dealings with others(colossians 3:12). As we flee from evil, we are to pursue gentleness as we seek to live godly lives (1 Timothy 6:11). As we deal with brothers and sisters in Christ who have gone astray, gotten caught in sin, or oppose the truth, we are to reach out to them with gentleness instead of harsh judgment or self-righteous superiority (Galatians 6:1; 2 Timothy 2:25; cf. Hebrews 5:2). Gentleness is especially needed as we seek to share our hope in Christ with those who do not yet know him as Lord (1 Peter 3:15). While gentleness may not be in vogue in today s world, it is demanded of us as we seek to reflect the holiness of our eternal God. So as you dress in the morning, don t forget to clothe yourself with gentleness. As you pray for the lost and the words you will use to share Christ with them, don t forget to ask God to fill you with wisdom and gentleness as you deal with them. As you face harsh and unfair criticism and opposition, don t forget to respond with a strong resolve to be holy and gentle before those who align themselves against you and the work of the Lord. www.heargodswordatbethlehem.com November 2009 Sermon Series How To Win Friends and Influence People Through Gentleness Gentleness That Turns Away Wrath (Proverbs 15:1) November 1, 2009 Appealing To People With Gentleness (2 Corinthians 10:1) November 4, 2009 The Evident of Gentleness (Philippians 4:5) November 8, 2009 The Gentleness of a Apostle (Thessalonians 2:7) November 11, 2009 The Gentleness of a Overseer (1 Timothy 3:1-3) November 15, 2009 The Gentleness of the Man of God (1 Timothy 6:11) November 18, 2009 The Gentleness of A Christian Wife (1 Peter 3:4) November 29, 2009

And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [b] and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." 29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground everything that has the breath of life in it I give every green plant for food." And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning the sixth day. It s another month! The weather has changed; trees, grass has made it s seasonal appearance. Children in class are anticipating Thanksgiving, Christmas and maybe even some snow. Parents, grandmothers, teachers, politicians anyone on a budget are trying to finish up this year. Prices on gasoline, food, toys have all skyrocketed out of control. Now, public health care. What about pay raises? All of this brings me to obedience in our lives. Obedience means the act or practice of obeying; dutiful submission or compliance or conformity. Why is obedience important in our lives? 2 John 1:6 (NIV) 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command i walk in love. John 14:21 (NIV) 21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Fa too will love him and show myself to him."

Page 4 The Fruit of the Spirit: Gentleness By First Lady Kimberly Eaton B e t h l e h e m M i s s i o n a r y B a p t i s t This month s Fruit is Gentleness. As we accept Jesus Christ as Lord of our life, we begin to receive and experience certain gifts from Him. The Bible describes these gifts as the Fruit of the Spirit. In Galatians 5:22-23 we are told that the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol. Listed below are various definitions of Gentleness. Mild as opposed to severe, rough or violent Proverbs 16:32 says that the person who is slow to anger is better than the powerful man and the one who can rule his own spirit is better than the person who conquers a city. Meekness or Being Humbly, Patient or Submissive Ephesians 4:2 tells us to be humble, gentle and patient with each other, making allowance for each others faults because of our love. Humility or a Modest Sense of One s Own Importance To Waive Superiority or to Voluntarily Assume Equality with an Inferior Person Does this remind you of Jesus? Philippians 2:6-8 says that Jesus, who was in fact, God, made Himself nothing, taking on the nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. Having a Willing Disposition Absence of Bad Temper and Not Belligerent If you find a Christian who is miserable on a regular basis, there is something wrong with his or her relationship with Jesus Christ. If they are living by the Spirit, their relationship can t help but be sweeten with a calm disposition. Gentleness is not a trait that is often valued in our society power and assertiveness will gain you more respect. However, we are shown over and over in the Bible that gentleness is a sign of a mature Christian. If you know Jesus Christ and walk with the Spirit, it will give you the great power of Christ. Gentleness is that power under control. Which spirit is controlling you?
