South Asia is blessed with a number of perennial rivers rising from the Himalayas. This icy region has a large number of glaciers those slowly moving masses of ice. These glaciers are the reservoirs, feeding the great rivers of South Asia. But global warming is playing havoc with the glaciers and they are melting. This process may unleash devastating floods into the mountain valleys causing unprecedented floods. The same process will ultimately lead to the drying up of the perennial rivers. These are the findings of a new study about the Himalayan glaciers. The study predicts that most of the glaciers in the region will vanish within 40 years due to global warming. It is said that the glaciers in the middle Himalayas are retreating. For instance, the Gangotri glaciers at the head of the Ganges is retreating at the rate of 30 metres per year. The study says that all glaciers in the central and eastern Himalayas could disappear by 2035 if their present rate of decline continues. (a) What will happen when the glaciers melt? They had evolved a civilization higher than that of the Aryan hordes who came in their wake. These Pre-Aryan had displaced still earlier people and built up new civilization which has astonished modern scholars by its extent and depth. The Aryan invasion repeated the process and led to fresh infusion of the old with the new.
