Chalice Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) The Sojourner August 22, 2011 Ice Cream Sundae You scream! I scream! We all scream for ice cream! This summer Pastor Linda has kept our minds off the heat by telling Bible stories during worship that most of us might remember from our younger days. Well this Sunday, it will all come to a great ending as we celebrate Ice Cream Sundae! The children's class for ages 4 through 12 will be making "God's eyes," an ancient custom of the people of Central America to go along with Pastor Linda s story for this week Ojos de Dios. Come at 9:00 and bring your parents! Then stay for Worship and the ICE CREAM! After worship there will be a light lunch and SUPREME ICE CREAM BAR with banana splits, root beer floats and build-it-yourself sundaes. Come one and all! Invite your friends! Invite your family! Invite the neighbors! Invite all the kids you know before the ice cream melts!

Chalice Christian Church is hosting their first ever Arts and Crafts fair on Saturday, October 15th. The goal is to have 50 crafters to display and sell their arts and crafts and we are well on our way with 7 tables reserved thus far. There is a $15 non-refundable registration fee and a $15 booth fee. There are a limited number of spaces with electricity for an additional $10 fee. Registration forms can be found on our website at http:// www.chalicechristian.com/#/craft-fair-signup. Crafters can register online to make the process easier. Be sure and tell your crafting friends about this opportunity. Storytellers in Children Worship and Wonder are looking for the donation of empty plastic shoeboxes which can be used to store the pieces of each story. Let Pat Barton know if you have one. (psbarton@mac.com) Parents of Children age 3 to second grade should save Sunday, September 4th when there will be an orientation of Children Worship and Wonder. Watch the Sojourner for more details. 3
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others... (Audrey Hepburn) This summer a dear long-time friend (college roommate whose name is also Linda) included me in a Facebook Group called Sisters in Soul. In this group there is an every-day exchange of wisdom bits, quotes from famous people, personal musings, and of course, responses to the posts. Honestly, at first I was a little miffed (sorry, Linda). I don t need one more thing to keep up with, to feel compelled to respond to (my grandmother would die all over again about my grammar). Generally I pick up the additions in my email, read and delete. About once a week I log onto my Facebook page and read the litany of thoughts and events posted by long-ago friends and new acquaintances, clergy colleagues and childhood friends of my children. Then this week I read the Audrey Hepburn quote posted by someone I don t even know. It stopped me in my tracks. It appears the inimitable Ms. Hepburn was talking woman to woman when she spilled out these words upon the world. However if you exchange the word inviting for attractive and fit for slim you ve pretty much got a gender-universal description of the Jesus way. I adore Audrey Hepburn and would kind of like to be like her, and I think if I were a man I would adore Audrey Hepburn and want to be like her in certain ways and then I look at her quote through the lens of a disciple, and I want to be like Jesus. Unabashedly imitating Pastor Linda Bigger Than Life Sermon Series This Sunday Pastor Linda will finish her series of sermons based on the Bible stories from your childhood. Come Sunday to hear Ojos de Dios when Pastor Linda will explore the story of Daniel, a stranger in a foreign land, who interprets dreams for a king. 4
