What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about and Why? MOTHERS One Key Text on Mothers

One Key Text on Mothers 20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, He is out of his mind. 22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.

One Key Text on Mothers 23 So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: How can Satan drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. 27 In fact, no one can enter a strong man s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man s house.

One Key Text on Mothers 28 Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin. 30 He said this because they were saying, He has an impure spirit.

One Key Text on Mothers 31 Then Jesus mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you. 33 Who are my mother and my brothers? he asked. 34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God s will is my brother and sister and mother. (Mk. 3)

One Key Text on Mothers 20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, He is out of his mind. Jesus faces two charges in this chapter: I. His family thinks He is out of His mind (vv. 20-21) II. The teachers of the 22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons. law are convinced He is demonized (v. 22)

Let s look at the 2nd charge first: II. The teachers of the law are convinced He is demonized (v. 22) A. The charge is illogical! (vv. 23-27) B. The charge is unforgivable! (vv. 28-30)

(Mk. 3) Now let s look at the 1st charge: I. His family thinks He is out of His mind (vv. 20-21) A. Jesus asks a strange question (v. 33) B. Jesus answers His own question! (vv. 34-35)

One Key Text on Mothers 31 Then Jesus mother and brothers arrived. (Mk. 3) What does it mean to do the will of God? John 7:17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.

The idea of seeking or finding the will of God is in fact a notion that springs more from pagan misconceptions about a pantheon of gods than it does from the Word of the One, True God. Waltke argues that much of what many evangelicals use to try to find the will of God for their lives is really what the Bible calls divination, a process used by pagan idolaters to search into the secret counsels of their own capricious and mischievous deities.

Many Christians, he says, think along these lines: God has a plan, and therefore he intends that I find it. Waltke s very sound reply to that, though: That is a non-sequitur, a conclusion that cannot logically follow the premise. Simply because God has a plan does not mean that He necessarily has any intention of sharing it with you; as a matter of fact, the message of Job is in part that the Lord in His sovereignty may allow terrible things to happen to you, and you may never know why (15).

Waltke proposes a six-point program of following God s guidance. The six steps are: 1) read your Bible, memorize it, meditate on it, and obey it; 2) develop a heart for God so that your desires are in tune with His word; 3) seek wise counsel from other Christians; 4) look for God s providence in circumstances around you; 5) ask yourself if what you re doing makes logical sense; and 6) be prepared for, but do not expect, divine intervention.
