Meridian Street Weekly February 14, 2019 Worship T imes 9:15 in t he Chapel 10:30 a.m. in t he Sanct uary A Man After God's Own Heart David was called "a man after my own heart" by God in 1 Samuel 13:14. Have you ever really thought about what that means, or the challenges to follow someone like him? Every pastor, when the go to a new appointment, quickly learns who the "King David is in the church. They also quickly hear the stories of those who had followed and failed to live up to the standard that had been set. As we continue looking at the major themes from the Hebrew Bible that influenced Jesus, David has to be near the top of the list. The Gospel writers go to great lengths to show that Jesus is from the house and linage of David, and often compare him to the great king. How did the comparisons with David affect Jesus? Did those comparisons make him a better person or did they make him bitter in believing he had to live up to someone of mythological proportions? Sunday we will look at how having strong role models can challenge us, but also how they can help us achieve things we might not have done otherwise. Read: Acts 13:15-33 Prayer: All-knowing God, We gather together with praise and thanksgiving for who You are, and for all that You have done for us. You know us better than we know ourselvesall our thoughts and actions-

and yet You love us. No matter where we go or what we do, Your love encircles us-ahead and behindgently leading and guiding and blessing. We praise You for Your love and Your faithful presence in our lives. May Your Spirit move in our hearts and minds as we worship togetherexamine our attitudes and actions, lay bare the things we need to confess, challenge us with Your Word, and guide us on to paths that lead to life. For we are Your people, called by Your name. Amen. Coming Ev ents Ash Wednesday Services - March 6 Join us on Ash Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. in the Chapel for the imposition of ashes. Holy Communion will be offered at the 7 p.m. service. Lenten Book Study 2019 is the year to fall in love - in love with Jesus Plan now to participate in the Lenten Book Study based on the book of John. We will be using Adam Hamilton's book: John: The Gospel of Light and Life. The class will be held on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. starting March 13. Books are available for purchase for $14 in the church office and childcare is available if needed. Please contact Bethany Scott if you need childcare. In Our Neighborhood Prayer Walk at Meridian Street The walk, sponsored by the cluster of local United Methodist churches to which we belong, will be Sunday, February 24, 3-5 p.m. The walk begins in the Welcome Center where you join with a small group of walkers. Join when you can. Small groups will be gathering and walking throughout the afternoon. This event is organized by and includes the following churches: Abundant Harvest UMC, Bethel UMC, Broad Ripple UMC, East 10 th Street UMC, Horizons of Faith UMC, Meridian Street UMC, Union Chapel UMC,

University UMC Meridian Messenger February Meridian Messenger The mission focus for February is Soup's On - and you can read more about this powerful ministry in the February Messenger. You'll also read about the incredible generosity shown through the Reverse Advent Calendar, a new ministry partner, and a short term bible study starting next week. Lots of other important information too - so take a few minutes to click on the link and read the latest Messenger! And in other news... Staff openings There are currently two open positions on the Meridian Street staff. For more information on any of these positions, please contact Pastor Steve. Communications Director: As has been announced previously, Church Council approved the creation of this vital position. Financial Secretary: Keisha Boger, our current financial secretary, has resigned that position effective at the end of May. Volunteer Sound System Operators Needed There is a need for additional volunteers to operate our sound system in the Sanctuary. The more people we have on the team, the easier it will be to meet the needs of our congregation and of the community. This is a great way to serve the church in a "behind the scenes" capacity. Training will be provided. The basic expectations are: Willing to serve during 10:30 a.m. worship on a rotating basis each month Must be of High School age or older Be on call for weddings, funerals, or special services/meetings as needed No previous experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and serve The first training session will be in the Sanctuary on Sunday, March 3 Sunday, March 3 following 10:30 a.m. worship. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Pastor Steve or Peggy Marshall at pmarshall@meridianstreet.org.

Coffee Anyone? The next date for Pastor Matt's Coffee House Office Hours is Tuesday, March 5 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Illinois Street Food Emporium. Join him for a cup of coffee (or tea and pastries) and share what's going on in your life, about the church, or anything in general. The office hours will continue on the first Tuesday of each month. If you would like to schedule another time to meet with Pastor Matt, he is happy to meet with you. Feel free to email him at mlandry@meridianstreet.org to set up a time.
