Newsletter February 2016 Monthly Newsletter of The Kirk of the Keys Presbyterian Church Message from the Pastor - By Rev. Dustin Sedlak Greetings in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Ghost. I pray that this February newsletter finds you growing in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ as we partner together towards making disciples of Christ in our community. Our season of Lent begins on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. Lent is a period of spiritual introspection for the Christian in the season leading up Easter. It is the 40 weekdays from Ash Wednesday to Easter and is often a time when Christians exercise disciplines such as fasting, penitence or abstinence (along with others that we will discuss during Sunday worship) while ideally replacing the practices that we give up with spiritual practices such as Bible reading, prayer, service and fishing. We invite you to join us on Ash Wednesday, February 10 at 5:30 pm for an Ash Wednesday service followed by a pancake dinner, both are open to the community. I invite and encourage You to join us this Lent in both worship and the celebration of Lent so that we might enjoy a deeper experience of the presence of God in both our individual lives and also in the life of the church. See you on Sunday! Justabranch, Pastor Dustin

We had very generous committee members, fantastic helpers, great food and wonderful music by the Praise Band. Several members of the PWA provided delicious cupcakes. Silent auction items helped to raise funds for church property improvement. If you happen to be in any of the following businesses, please thank them for their generous contributions: Tricia s Island Girl Hair Salon, Whalton s Pet Shop, Stuffed Pig, Marathon Community Theatre, Rose s Best Little Hair House, Publix, Best Nail Salon, Winn Dixie, Dr. Michael Dunn/Keys Animal Hospital, BLK Storage, Lower Keys Tackle and Sea Center. Our wonderful fundraising committee made this all possible: Steve and Connie Boozer, Mary Phillips, Fabian and Shawn Russell, Bill and Janet Schneider, Pete and Rose Way, Joslyn Kirkegaard, Ken Klindtworth, Janet Oeschle, Kim Rockhold and Dave Williamson. Our energetic committee welcomes new members anytime! Tickets for a $1,000 raffle are being sold. They are available Sunday mornings and in the church office. The winning ticket will be drawn on March 1st at 7 pm during a pulled pork dinner from 5:30-7:30. We will have ice cream sundaes too! All proceeds of your dinner donation will go toward church property improvement Pledge forms have been distributed with the individual year end statements and also in the weekly church bulletins during February. Please consider helping us budget for the operation of all aspects of our church by completing this form. Session has approved the plan to have a capital campaign beginning Feb 1. It will be called Vision 2019 and the goal is $300,000. The physical needs of the manse, church and rental property make this necessary. We hope you will consider making an additional contribution toward this goal. An engineering study of the church spalling issues has been completed. Currently the specifications are being formulated and will be provided to several contractors for the bidding process. We need to be good stewards and carefully preserve our property.

Welcome New Members Ray and Ilze Aguila - with son Michael (5) and daughter Layla (16 months). We just recently moved back to the FL Keys after living in Boston for 4 years. Ilze is originally from South Africa and Ray is from Cuba. Both currently work at Hawks Cay Resort and are happy to be close to family and friends again. Jeb & Carla Hale - Jeb & Carla live in Marathon with their 3 children; Steven, Taylor and Sean. Jeb is the general manager of The Sunset Grille and Raw Bar and also maintains an active real estate license. Jeb is also a certified firefighter/ paramedic. They are active members of Kirk of the Keys and have been attending for over 6 years. Jeb was also just recently ordained to become an Elder of the Kirk. Richard & Sandy Hubbard - have been visiting Marathon and attending the Kirk since 1999. They moved to KCB permanently from Massachusetts in June 2015, just after their youngest, Richie, graduated from high school. The whole family made the move south, as Richie and his older sister Grace live in Gainesville and attending Santa Fe Community College. Richard is a licensed attorney in Massachusetts, continuing his practice here. Sandy assists in the law office, and recently began working part time as the Membership Specialist in the Florida Keys for the Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida council. Richard and Sandy have felt the call of God to move to the Keys and actively seek and eagerly await what He has in store for them in. William Savage - Born and raised in Philadelphia and spent most of my life in Pennsylvania. I am a widower with three grown children, one grandson, and one great grandson. Worked as a pharmacist and bought my own store in 1972. I proudly passed the store on to my pharmacist son when I retired. Currently I spend seven months out of the year living at Ocean Isles Fishing Village in Marathon.

Christian Education Update by Clara Werner It seems that every year we have to say goodbye to a family that has become one of us. A family who has made a difference in the lives of our children and in the lives of others. The Hanson family will be leaving Marathon to live in Texas where they will be close to their other family. Rick is retiring from the Navy and I want to thank him for his service. Shawn, Jessica and Lainie have given unselfishly to the Kirk and I know they will continue serving the Lord in their new church in Corpus Christie. Lucy Stalnaker will be stepping up and stepping into Shawn s shoes working as the other Toddler Team Teacher with Catherine Dunn. Thank you Lucy for saying yes! Respectfully submitted, Clara Werner Christian Ed Chair/Elder Our Directory is Being Updated! On Sunday, February 14th we will have a team of volunteers assisting us in taking pictures of our church families. Beginning on Jan 31st, we will be providing a form in the bulletins for you to update your current information. Our last directory was in 2012 so we do realize that some information may no longer be relevant or correct. You will also be able to reserve your portrait slot early on this form if you wish to do so. We truly hope that you all will be a part of our new Church Directory!

Stepping Up 2016 Stewardship Emphasis A tithe is giving 10% of what we ve been given back to the Lord. Tithing is a joyful act of worship that is an individual decision between us and God. This choice is a personal one; however, as an organization we must forecast, budget and plan in order to be good stewards of what God has entrusted us with. Will you join us in Stepping Up as together we serve the Lord? If you would like to share with us what your offerings will be for this upcoming 2016 year, than please take some time and pray about this decision then return this card to the church office by March 1, 2016.
