NORTHERN GREAT LAKES SYNOD Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Marquette, Michigan ngls@nglsynod.org E-Notes for November 16, 2018 Christ the King Sunday November 25, 2018 QUOTE OF THE DAY The year was 1925. The Great War is 7 years over. This is the year that dogsleds reached Nome with emergency diphtheria serum after a 100- km run and the World s Fair opened in Chicago. It s the year that the Presidential monument on Mount Rushmore was first proposed, and when John T. Scopes was indicted, tried, and convicted for teaching Darwin s theory of evolution. The American Association for Advancement of Atheism formed in this year. Adolph Hitler wrote Mein Kampf, Benito Mussolini dissolved the Italian Parliament and announced himself dictator over Italy, and the League of Nations held a conference on arms control and poison gas usage. This is the year that the KKK marched 40,000 strong on Washington, the year that the Italian liberalnational party joined the fascist movement and the German SS was formed. In the year 1925, dictators were on the rise as were the political ideologies of fascism, communism, socialism, and hate. People were looking for something, someone to believe in. They were questioning not only the authority of God, but the very existence of God. They were being swept up into movements that seduced them with power, and a

false sense of superiority over other human beings. And into the midst of this, Pope Pius the 11th declared a day to celebrate and proclaim to the world anew that of all the world's authorities and leaders and movements and politics, only Christ is King. ~from a sermon by Bishop Katherine Finegan preached on Christ the King Sunday in the year of our Lord 2009. Attention Treasurers! Please note these dates: January 11, 2019 The last day for checks to arrive in the Synod Office so that 2018 benevolence gifts can be credited to 2018 giving. February 11, 2019 The last day for checks to arrive in the Synod Office so that January, 2019 giving can be credited to the Synod fiscal year. As part of our involvement in the ministry efforts of the greater church, we have representation on various boards and committees. Two positions that are currently open are on the Lutheran Office for Public Policy of Wisconsin (LOPPW) and Lutheran Social Services. If you have any interest in being a part of this larger ministry effort, or would like more information, please call the Synod Office. Copper Country Flood Relief Update Disaster Case Managers Helping Flood Victims If you still need help recovering from the June flood, assistance is available. Two local disaster case managers hired in October will assist Copper Country residents facing long term effects from June 2018 flooding, also locally known as the Father s Day Flood. Marci Vivian and Dennis Leopold are assessing needs and stand ready, reaching out to help those affected by the Father s Day Flood. They are also looking into enhancing counseling options specific to flooding. This is a commitment to holistically getting their lives back to a place of normalcy, said the Rev. Paul Perez, of the Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church. The work of disaster case management is not only material but it s psychological, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Marci and Dennis work with the Copper Country Team Disaster Recovery Group comprised of local church and community leaders, and nonprofit and government

agencies. They also work in partnership with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMCOR is the humanitarian disaster recovery arm of the Michigan Conference United Methodist Church. Their work officially got up and running Oct. 5th four months after the June 17 flood. One thing they know for sure - lots of people still need help. The disaster case manager service does not cost residents anything, they simply have to reach out to Vivian and Leopold indicating they need help to start the process or opt in when they receive a call from the case managers. Leopold and Vivian are based out of the old D&N Bank building in Hancock, Suite 402, and can be reached by phone: (906) 231-6856. They are looking for volunteers to accompany them on home visits and skilled laborers to help with flood damage assessments and home repair. Funds for flood recovery are being collected through the Keweenaw Community Foundation located in Hancock as well as Lutheran Social Services Lutheran Disaster Response c/o Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Houghton. LIFTING UP TO GOD IN PRAYER For all those suffering from the fires in California. God comfort those who mourn the loss of homes and the loss of loved ones. For all those who live in fear. For those who are seeking a good harvest of deer, that all may be safe. For our congregations that are pastorally vacant, may God raise up servant leaders and may ministry continue unabated.
