Good Friday Tenebrae Service April 14, 2017 7:00 p.m. Remembering Christ s Suffering and Death for Us ENTER IN SILENCE The word tenebrae means darkness and refers specifically to a service of worship in which the progressive extinguishing of candles represents the snuffing out of the life of Christ. Our Easter observance today continues the service which began last night (Maundy Thursday). Use this time of reflection to remember Christ s time in the Upper Room with His disciples and His time of prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Please turn off or silence all communication devices. Courtesy walker and wheelchair are available at the main entrance. Hearing Assistive Devices (FM Receivers) are available at the back sound booth.
Prelude Chorale By His Wounds By His wounds, His wounds, will we be healed. And for our transgressions, His passion, has made us well. Let us come again and feed on Him, our Lord Emmanuel! Traditional American Folk Melody; Lyrics by Isaac Wardell, 2011 The Call to Worship God calls His people to worship BASED ON JOHN 3:16-17 God so loved the world that he gave his own dearly beloved Son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life. On this day of remembrance and hope, we declare with joy: God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but to save it. Let us worship God. Hymn of Praise We behold the glory of God O SACRED HEAD NOW WOUNDED HYMN 247 Invocation We seek the Lord s presence among us 2
Confession of Sin We acknowledge our sin Leader: Merciful Father, we meet each other today at the foot of the cross. We wait with each other as those who inflict wounds on one another: People: Have mercy on us. As those who are tempted to spurn Your love for other loves: Have mercy on us. As those who sometimes put our trust in power and prestige: Have mercy on us. As those who often pursue our own personal interests: Have mercy on us. As those who will put others on trial: Have mercy on us. As those who are tempted to refuse to forgive: Have mercy on us. As those who can be afraid of the world s frown and displeasure: Have mercy on us. Amen. Silent Confession 3

Hymn of Response We rejoice in the grace of God How Deep the Father s Love For Us How deep the Father s love for us, How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss, The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the chosen One, Bring many sons to glory. Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, Call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished. His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished. I will not boast in anything No gifts, no power, no wisdom, But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom. Words and music by Stuart Townend 5
Seven Meditations on the Death of Christ from Isaiah 53 Isaiah 53:2, 52:14 Steve Fults For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. As many were astonished at you his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind. Hymn of Response CHRIST, WE DO ALL ADORE THEE HYMN 737 Chorale Isaiah 53:3 JB Willbanks He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. Hymn of Response MAN OF SORROWS! WHAT A NAME HYMN 246 VERSES 1-3 6
Isaiah 53:4-5,8 Steve Percifield Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? Hymn of Response Chorale THE SORROWS THOU ART BEARING The sorrows Thou art bearing, With none their burden sharing, On me they ought to fall. The torture Thou art feeling, Thy patient love revealing, Tis I that should endure it all. Harmonized by J.S. Bach; from The St. Matthew Passion 7
Isaiah 53:7 Ryan Moore He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. Hymn of Response AH, HOLY JESUS, HOW HAST THOU OFFENDED HYMN 248 Chorale Isaiah 53:6 Scott Fredricks All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Hymn of Response Chorale SON OF GOD, FROM GLORY COME Kneeling down on rocks at dark of night, He sees our darker cloud of sin. Horror grips his soul with razor claws And tears his heart apart within. Father, please, if possible, take this cup away! But he followed where his Father led And bore the burden on him laid. Son of God, from glory come, upon my cross of pain, Stain of sin from my black heart upon your holy name; Crushing guilt of all my life upon your shoulders weighed, Hanging there in agony enduring all my shame. 8
Darkness shrouds the sky around him, For the sun must hide its face From blessing him who has been cursed And covered up with our disgrace. Father, Father, where are you? I am all alone! But no answer came to comfort him who For our comfort came to groan. Counting all the sins he bore for us Would be to count the seashore sand. Drowning in a sea of punishment, He drained the oceans of God s wrath. It is finished! Now we are from all guilt released; We with God are fully reconciled, Drinking in eternal peace. Words and Music by Jason Sommerlad arr. by Jacob Tilton Isaiah 53:9-11 Jacob Tilton And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief, when his soul makes and offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 9
Hymn of Response WHAT WONDROUS LOVE IS THIS What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul! What wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul? When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, when I was sinking down, sinking down; when I was sinking down beneath God's righteous frown, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul. To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing, to God and to the Lamb, I will sing; to God and to the Lamb who is the great I AM - while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing; while millions join the theme, I will sing. Isaiah 52:13; 53:12 David Westerfield Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted. Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors. 10
Hymn of Response WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small. Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. Words by Isaac Watts Silent Meditation The last candle is not extinguished, reminding us of the hope of His resurrection promise. Exit in Silence Our Easter observance continues. The service does not end but rather recesses to continue Easter Sunday morning. Please exit in contemplative silence, to return Easter morning at 10:00 with great rejoicing! 11
