Mark. 1 1 The Good News* about Jesus Christ, John Prepares the Way for Jesus (Mt. 3:1 12; Lk. 3:1 9, 15 17; Jn. 1:19 28)

A MAN CALLED ANDREW JOHN 1:35-40

Here in Mark's gospel, Jesus proclaims the good news in a powerful way. It's an missional message with three parts to it:

1 Route 66 Understanding Mark Dr. Stephen Rummage, Senior Pastor Bell Shoals Baptist Church November 9, 2016 Mark 10:45 (ESV) For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. Structure of Mark 1. The Personality of the Servant (1:1-11) 2. The Proof of the Servant (1:12-13) 3. The Particulars of the Servant (1:14-13:37) 4. The Passion of the Servant (14:1-15:47 5. The Position of the Servant (16:1-20) Following Jesus Mark 8:34-38 Mark 8:34 (ESV) And calling the crowd to Him with His disciples, He said to them, If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. Mark 8:35 (ESV) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it. Mark 8:36 (ESV) For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? Mark 8:37 (ESV) For what can a man give in return for his soul? Mark 8:38 (ESV) For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels. Following Jesus is 1. A Choice that Costs Mark 8:34 (ESV) And calling the crowd to Him with His disciples, He said to them, If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.

2 Mark 1:17 (ESV) And Jesus said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men. Mark 1:18 (ESV) And immediately they left their nets and followed Him. Mark 2:14 (ESV) And as He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and He said to him, Follow Me. And he rose and followed Him. Mark 2:15 (ESV) And as He reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and His disciples, for there were many who followed Him. Mark 10:21 (ESV) And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me. Mark 10:28 (ESV) Peter began to say to Him, See, we have left everything and followed You. 2. A Choice that Clarifies Mark 8:35 (ESV) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it. Mark 8:36 (ESV) For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? Mark 8:37 (ESV) For what can a man give in return for his soul? Philippians 3:7 (ESV) But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Philippians 3:8 (ESV) Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ Philippians 3:9 (ESV) and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith 3. A Choice that Counts

3 Mark 8:38 (ESV) For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels. Matthew 10:32 (ESV) So everyone who acknowledges Me before men, I also will acknowledge before My Father who is in heaven, Matthew 10:33 (ESV) but whoever denies Me before men, I also will deny before My Father who is in heaven.

The Twelve Disciples Matthew 10:2-4 Mark 3:16-19 Luke 6:14-16 Acts 1:13 Simon Peter Simon Peter Simon Peter Simon Peter Andrew James Andrew John James John James James John Andrew John Andrew Philip Philip Philip Philip Bartholomew Bartholomew Bartholomew Thomas Thomas Matthew Matthew Bartholomew Matthew Thomas Thomas Matthew James (of Alphaeus) James (of Alphaeus) James (of Alphaeus) James (of Alphaeus) Thaddaeus 1 Thaddaeus 1 Simon (the Zealot) Simon (the Zealot) Simon (the Cananite) 2 Simon (the Cananite) Judas (of James) Judas (of James) Judas Iscariot Judas Iscariot Judas Iscariot.. 1 Matthew and Mark have the name Thaddaeus while Luke, in his two lists (Luke 6 and Acts 1), has Judas (of James). Some think Judas may have been his original name and that it was changed later to Thaddaeus (meaning perhaps warm-hearted ) in order to avoid the stigma attached to the name Judas Iscariot. 2 The Cananite is a transliteration which probably represents an Aramaic work meaning Zealous. It is interesting that all four lists begin with Simon Peter and end with Judas Iscariot (except the Acts 1 list, for Judas had already killed himself). Also, the names would appear to be in groups of four. Peter, Andrew, James and John are always in the first group - though not always in that order - and Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, and Matthew are in the second group in all four lists. In all four lists, Peter s name heads the first group. Philip heads the second and James (of Alphaeus) heads the third. John s Gospel does not contain a listing of the apostles.
