Anthony s Faith Formation Corner The Cost of Discipleship In this Sunday s Gospel reading, we hear a rather difficult statement from the mouth of the Savior: Whoever loves father or mother or son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me, (Mt 10:37). Actually this is a softer version of Luke 14:26: If anyone comes to me without hating his father or mother or brother or sister he cannot be my disciple. In either case, the conditions for following Jesus are quite demanding. The Lord expects his disciples to be more than half-hearted. At the same time, however, he does not ask for a guarantee of complete fidelity in advance or else, no one would qualify to be his disciple. What Jesus does ask is that his disciples know what they are getting into when they say Yes to follow him. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a renowned German Lutheran pastor who was hanged by the Nazi regime in 1945 for trying to overthrow Hitler. A few years before his death, he wrote a book that was translated as The Cost of Discipleship. That work of his gave rise to the celebrated distinction between cheap grace and costly grace. The book itself is not that interesting, as I recall, except for that famous distinction. Cheap grace is the fallacy that since Christ had died for our sake, you can have everything for nothing. It is like preaching about the forgiveness of sins without requiring repentance, communion/absolution without confession, etc. [Keep in mind that Bonhoeffer was Protestant; yet his language about confession, communion and absolution sound very Catholic. That is because traditional European Protestants are a lot closer to Catholics than are the so-called Evangelical and Bible-Belt Protestants in this country.] In today s context, I would say that cheap grace can be likened to searching for things on google without doing the actual research. This is a point I always try to remind our school children: namely, they cannot just go to the Internet to find easy answers to things, but rather, they have to hit the books! On the other hand, costly grace is like the treasure buried in the field, which a man would gladly sell all that he has to buy that field to obtain the treasure. It is the call of Jesus, at which the disciples leave everything to follow him. And most importantly, costly grace is costly because it cost God the very life of his Son In our commitment as disciples, do we fall under the category of cheap grace, or costly grace? I am sure that for all of us at some point, grace has been cheap. And the Lord knows out limitations. He does not demand the impossible out of his people. However, the Lord does require us to redirect ourselves and change our priorities in life. In the end, we cannot be halfhearted disciples, and our commitment cannot be partial! Demasiadas riquezas en una sola dosis? No, si tomamos las palabras de Jesús sobre "ser acogedores" de corazón. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Hace algunos años, el cantante de rock Carlos Santana y el grupo roquero Maná ganaron un premio en los "Latin Grammys" por su canción: "Corazón espinado". Esta bella canción es de un hombre que lamenta el dolor que una mujer le ha causado. No la puede olvidar, porque ella le ha dejado el corazón espinado. Esta canción siempre me recuerda al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, corazón rodeado por una corona de espinas e inflamado por el amor que le tiene a su mujer, la Iglesia, es decir, nosotros. La devoción al Sagrado Corazón proviene de una monja francesa, santa Margarita María Alacoque a quien Jesús le mostró su corazón en junio de 1675. Jesús le dijo que su corazón arde de amor por los seres humanos, pero los cristianos sólo lo ofendemos con insultos, ingratitud e indiferencias. Cuántas veces, como Iglesia o como individuos, le hemos espinado el corazón al Señor? Y aun así, la imagen del corazón espinado e inflamado de Jesús nos sigue cantando y llamando para que seamos suyos.
