How the time has flown and how the world has changed! When I agreed, I didn t appreciate that John would make the job even more difficult for me by setting such a high benchmark through his exemplary term of office. But here I am, and I am proud and honoured to be president of our thriving club. Very many thanks to so many of you who have wished me well - I look forward to the year and will do my best to do justice to the position. It is difficult to set objectives for the year. The club is very well organised and successful. At one level I will fell that I have succeeded if I am able to hand over to David in twelve months' time with the club in the same rude good health. The club has evolved to be what it is, proving Darwin's theory to be as appropriate to a Rotary club as to the human race. I see no reason to interfere with that process of survival of the best ideas. That said, I am sure there are nuances that can be applied. The five year plan, so thoroughly explored and put together by John, identifies some challenges which we must address. There are a few little niggles that need to be grasped and I hope I can help to resolve some of these, but I wish to adopt a positive approach in all we do, and to ensure that we continue to enjoy the warmth of each-others' fellowship which is such a hallmark of our club. The year started well with an excellent handover evening at Sproughton Tithe Barn. The weather may have been gloomy, but the evening was warm and friendly, the food excellent and the bar attentively manned by John. It was very fitting that John's last act was to induct Chris as a member. Many thanks to David for another meticulously organised function. Congratulations to Ed who represented the club at the Ipswich club's Mastermind event and finished a very creditable second to Merv Dye, the Immediate Past President of the Ipswich Club. I much look forward to seeing many of you at the barbecue next week. Nigel

German Twinning Members of the Rotary Club of Bad Salzuflen are visiting us in Ipswich East the weekend of 22nd-24th September. Two Boards are circulating: The first is for you to sign up to attend a BBQ at the Last Anchor the Friday night (22nd September) and the second for a Safari Supper on the Saturday night 23rd September. We are looking for volunteers to host either a starter or a main course for eight people. Dessert and coffee will be hosted by one couple in central Ipswich. This is a wonderful opportunity for nonhosting Rotarians to join in and meet our German cousins. Can t attend Rotary Lunch? The Long and the Short of It...an interesting situation as Second Vice President of Felixstowe Rotary Club Mark Watkin (5'4'') tries to handover to Madis Neemelo (6'10"). Please e-mail David Knights at mail@davidbrownipswich.co.uk or ring 222266 by 10am on Monday It s important we order the right number of meals to help the kitchen maintain their high standard. If you ve apologised but later decide you can attend, please let David know in advance. If you ordered a salad, please don t change your mind (when you see what everyone else is eating) because the kitchen prepares as many meals as have been ordered. Newsletter copy should be sent to Editor, Alan Forsdike by the Saturday night preceding publication day (Monday). Email preferred please to alan.forsdike@btinternet.com On Duty Rota? - one of the two duty Rotarians takes responsibility to give a vote of thanks (except when it s a member talking then the President has that pleasure) and the other duty Rotarian provides a brief newsletter write-up which should be sent to the Editor by Friday of that same week email address for copy: alan.forsdike@btinternet.com 4

If you are interested in joining this exciting trip with Ipswich Rotary Club, please contact Immediate Past President Mervyn Dye on mervyndye@gmail.com as soon as possible as places are going fast. 5
