March 2018 Reaching U.P. United Presbyterian Church 1701 E. Second Street Bloomington, IN 47401 812-332-1850 http://upcbloomington.org Inside this Edition Letter from the 2 Pastor 2 How to Get Involved Scout Sunday Observed 3 3 Birthdays and Anniversaries 3 Financial Report Shrove Tuesday a Great Celebration of Food, Fun and Fellowship Again! UPC s second Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner was held February 13 in Fellowship Hall. Admission was free with donations requested to benefit UPC s Camp Pyoca Scholarships. Over 80 people were in attendance and an amazing $395 was raised! Reverend John Napoli was the official host and pancake flipper! Linda Brown, Michelle Heitink, Judie Iverson, Virginia McCartney, Lou Malcomb, Colleen Swanson and Caroline Worden assisted the pastor in the kitchen. Pastor John, Allen Pease and Stephanie Worden decorated Fellowship Hall Madre Gras style and the Heritage Hall Ramblers Dixieland Band provided the music. It was all topped off by a dessert table created by Colleen and Virginia. Guests enjoyed sausage and their choice of plain, chocolate chip, blueberry or gluten free pancakes. Highlight of the evening was the traditional King Cake baked from scratch by budding baker Caroline Worden and her Mom Stephanie. Souheil Haddad found the baby in the cake which won him a two-piece luggage set! All agreed that this was as much fun as the first Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner last year and that we ll do it again next year! 4 We Get Lettes! 5 Lenten Schedule 6 Youth in Action! 8 Calendar of Events Melanie, Darian and Stephanie had a good time (at left) while Linda improvised a Mardi Gras mask as she had pancakes with husband Tom. Allen, Sue and Bob loaded their plates up with at least one each of the kinds of pancakes offered. A huge thank you goes to all the folks who made this year s Shrove Tuesday celebration such a success. We also thank Souheil Haddad for taking these great photos!

From the Pastor s Pen... It feels like yesterday that we turned our calendars to the month of February, as we now are turning the page to March. There is no more Dixieland music, and the ashes have long worn off. We are well into the Season of Lent the area that I refer to as the long stretch. Ash Wednesday is a distant memory, and we are still about a month away from Easter Sunday. It is the time where fasting can become a true chore. But, take comfort that we are not alone, as we are all traveling through this wilderness together and United Presbyterian is here to assist! Come, and spend some time in one of our three weekly studies. Come, and spend some time with us during our Tuesday Lenten meditation services. Come, and spend some time with us Sunday mornings as we worship and fellowship in the presence of Christ. And come, and spend some time with us as we break bread on Maundy Thursday and experience the loss of our Light on Good Friday. Fasting can be a difficult exercise it takes great patience, and great dedication. It is good that we don t have to do it alone. Lean on each other, lean on your church, and lean on Christ. Peace and Grace to you throughout this Lenten Season, Pastor John How to Get Involved If you are interested in contributing articles or helping to put together the newsletter, please contact Andy Hill at andy@andyhill.us Volunteering with Sunday School We are always looking for loving people willing to teach once a month in Sunday School or help in the nursery. Please contact Melanie Mathis-McBride at susieq_msm@yahoo.com Fellowship Hour Fellowship Hour is a time to share with one another over coffee and snacks. Everyone is invited to attend. It is held immediately following the Sunday worship service. Fellowship hours can be hosted by groups, families, or individuals. If you feel led to serve in this way, a signup sheet is in the fellowship hall. Nursery Attendant We are needing volunteers to staff the nursery from 9a-11a immediately. Please let Melanie know if you are interested at susieq_msm@yahoo.com. Utilize Scrip UPC receives a percentage from the merchant for each gift card purchased. Place and purchase your order the last Sunday of the month & pick up the following Sunday. Little Red Wagon The little red wagon is waiting to be filled with canned goods and hygiene products for Monroe County United Ministries. For more information ask one of our Deacons. Page 2

Scout Sunday Observed at UPC Originally planned to be observed on Sunday, February 11, bad weather and ice caused the cancellation of that service. So, honoring the Cub, Brownie, Boy and Girls Scouts of UPC was done on February 18. Brownie Caroline Worden and Cub Scout Logan Worden received the day s offering and brought it forward to be blessed by Reverend Napoli. As part of the service, Den Mother Stephanie Worden was happy to present the Cub Scouts God and Family Award to her son Logan. He had worked extensively throughout the previous summer with Reverend Napoli to complete the various steps to earn the award. Thanks to Souheil Haddad for these photos. March Birthdays and Anniversaries Mar 7 Leina Joseph Mar 8 Michelle Heitink Mar 10 Bob & Sue Lorimer Anniversary Mar 10 Juliana Spir Mar 16 Deborah Heitink Mar 23 Rachel & Joe Loop Anniversary Mar 30 Travis Bauer Financial Report We re off to a good start for the new-year. As of the end of January, we are $10,549.94 to the good. Our January income was $22,851.50 and our expenses were $12,301.56. The expenses are typical, but the income is much higher than usual due to one-time annual donations on the part of some members. This surplus is encouraging, but historically, we know that it will be depleted within a few months. Don Root United Presbyterian Church Page 3

Youth in Action (and everyone is invited to join) We still need your support to nurture our youth. We are looking for a person to teach the teens once a month (most likely the 4th Sunday of the month). Curriculum is provided but could use some supplements provided by your personal touch. This is a 1-2 hour commitment a month. We also need someone to help in the nursery. There is an opening the 3rd Sunday of each month. This is a 2 hour commitment from 9-11am. These positions are critical in creating a calm consistent atmosphere in the nursery. If you are interested in volunteering or getting involved with UPC youth contact Melanie Mathis-McBride (susieq_msm@yahoo.com). Page 6
