He Became Just Like Us! So We d Become Like Him and Be His Intervention! (A response to the school shooting in Newtown CT.) By B. D. Tate Why did God send His only begotten Son into the world to become one of us? He didn t really have to come did he? God is almighty and there is no limit on what God can do. Certainly He could have fixed whatever the problem was from heaven. God could have intervened from heaven to stop what was wrong or correct the issues of mankind. God in His position from heaven could stop whatever He wants and do whatever He wants; there was no need to come down here. Isn t this what we think? I have a sign given to me as a joke of course and it reads, Don t make Me come down there! God. Maybe as a parent we ve had a few occasions where we yelled out to our kids, Stop whatever it is; don t make me come down there! We of course say this because we don t want to be bothered with coming down the steps in order to deal with the problem. We d much rather make the threat and have the problem stop. If on the rare occasions we must come down to stop the problem with our kids, all the more then the wrath of dad for inconveniencing me and taking me away from what I really wanted to be doing. Was God taken away from what He really wanted to be doing when Jesus was sent? Recently, another terrible mass killing has occurred in one of our public schools. Twenty innocent young children were slaughtered. We still don t know why. What a tragedy and what a nightmare for these parents. Many are asking, Why did God allow this? Some are asking, Why didn t God stop it? These are legitimate questions from hearts of 1

torn and grieving parents. Yet, at the same time these are questions that are totaling missing what this world is all about and what God has done. We want God to stop the bad stuff when it is beyond our ability to stop it. We want God to prevent evil when such horrendous acts are perpetrated upon defenselessness. I completely understand this; however, what is not being recognized or acknowledged is what God did when He set us up on this planet. God s Set Up God gave us dominion with every intention of being the power and source behind our authority. We would speak and His Spirit would enforce. God wanted us to experience life as He has it; life that is full, responsible, powerful, expressive, creative, loving, giving, and the joy of blessing and blessing again. God made us as god to this world. Everything was to be under our authority. Gen. 1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." God never intended for us to have this place of honor without Him. We were to rule and reign as He would. Everything would be governed through the same power and the same plan as heaven itself accept that man would be in charge. When Adam and Eve disobeyed and rebelled against His one prohibition; the power and source for our governing was disconnected. God was cut off from man by our sinfulness. God would not use His power and glory to govern with selfish, greedy, lustful, uncaring, brutal, unloving, cruel, and any other ungodly ways of sin driven human beings. 2

After so long of time has past since the fall many have gotten the wrong idea; some now accuse God of setting things up and then abandoning us when it was the other way around. We also think that God is bothered by us because we often get bothered by others. Instead of us learning who God created us to be through God s eyes we are describing God through our sin fallen eyes. This simply means we are getting God wrong and often asking the wrong questions. We ve got to understand something very important God cannot lie! What God has done or given cannot be rescinded. God doesn t make mistakes or choices that are bad. His decision to give us dominion was thought through and it made Him glad. It pleased the Lord to give us the kingdom once and He s doing it again through His Son. God s Fix Why did God send His son? It wasn t just so He d visit us and hang out for a while then leave like someone would on vacation. It was because there was no other way. God had to become just like us because only human beings have the right and authority to govern this world. God couldn t fix things from above (from heaven) because no one on earth was connected to God as in born of the same Spirit. God was on the outside looking in because Adam and Eve had kicked Him out. They decided they wanted to make their own decisions which changed the way we operate by nature. Our nature is, I want to rule and reign! Our nature is, I don t want anyone telling me what to do! When Jesus became just like us that means He operated only as a human being can. This passage explains it: Phil. 2: 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 3

8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. This passage means that Jesus as the divine incarnated Son of God did not operate as the divine. He emptied Himself or set aside His Godhead power and authority to be just like us. Someone might say, Well Jesus performed miracles, healed the sick, raised the dead, cast out demons, and many other such signs; we don t do this! That is true, Jesus did these things over and over again; yet, as you study the scriptures we can see that Jesus did them as a man under the anointing the Holy Spirit. Lu 4:18 The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; Jesus came to be one of us so that we could become one with Him. He came to fix the disconnection problem and He did when He took upon Himself the sin of the world. When He took sin upon the cross He was paying off justice, righteousness, and truth. He was fulfilling the law s demands against sinners (Col. 2:13, 14). In other words, all of our unrighteous decisions, unjust actions, and selfish governing were paid for to the satisfaction of a Holy God. Jesus said, It is finished! Or, It is fixed When We See Jesus We See Ourselves! Having said all of this to remind us of these truths, I can now proceed with how this manifests in our lives as born again believers. And, II Co 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich. 4

2Co 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. Jesus became one of us not only to take away sin but to also show us by example what God had intended for all of us from the beginning. God made us as god to this world. Jesus, under the anointing the Holy Spirit, operated as god to this world. He governed, authorized, and manifested the will of God to overcome the curse of the law in our lives. He came to correct that which had gone wrong. He did it and then became for us our savior taking us out from under the law into God s grace. This act was restoring what God set up from creation; that we d be as god to the world through His grace. Our godlike position and power has been restored in His name. Jesus said, John 14:12 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. What has God done? He has restored what we lost from the fall. He has saved us from ourselves and our sins. He has set us in Christ forever blessed and secured. God has helped us and come to us in our great need. God has fixed the problem without changing His original mandate. God has not altered His word to get the job done. God didn t cheat and make things right without justice, truth, and righteousness. God intervened in the greatest possible way without violating His word to us when He gave man dominion. Jesus said, I came to serve; not to be served. God set us up to rule and reign in this earth by giving us the authority in His name. This puts God s sovereignty in our hands. This puts God s power at our command. This makes God s almighty power subject to mankind upon this earth. God in Christ is still coming to serve and not be served. In response to this amazing grace we glorify God by 5

exercising our faith in what He s done. We take and assert this truth: God has given us the power of Jesus name to work God s will in the earth! What About The Children? Why then didn t God intervene to save those children? Now, as much as this seems like an indictment that God somehow chooses when and if He s going to intervene; God did intervene to stop the loss of those children! From our fallen sinful eyes we look at Jesus birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection and give God all the glory for saving us from our sins His grand intervention! But then, we look at life now and think that this salvation is for heaven and not so much for today. We discount the intervention of Jesus life and our salvation as if it really doesn t apply while we live. Then, we look at such an effort to send His Son and become baffled, confused, angry, bewildered, and disillusioned because if God did so much then to care for the world, why would He not stop the atrocities going on such as the Newtown school shooting? Why such outstanding moments of God s intervention in the past but not so much now? We Are Not Recognizing Dominion We are forgetting that dominion belongs to us. If God stops the shooting from heaven as with a special force field, or causing the young man to miss or die suddenly for attempting to kill children; He would being doing this not as one who has authority and dominion. God literally cannot stop what mankind decides to do unless someone prays and acts to stop it. Jesus acted to stop the curse, reverse the pain, cast out the demons, and cleanse the lepers; but He did it as one with human dominion to do it. Now that He is gone where is God now? God sent His son and then left taking care of sin but what about now, in this life! What about helping us now? Must we all endure this fallen world s troubles with little help and power? Must our only source of true hope be when we all get together over there (in heaven)? 6

God Did Something So Amazing We Don t Seem To Believe It! God didn t leave us in our powerless state and without hope in this life. God has done far more than promising to never leave us nor forsake us. He didn t come to us in our born again experience just to give us peace to endure whatever happens here. He didn t bring Jesus home to heaven and decide to wait for the world to end to restore what He d given us from the creation. God reproduced Jesus in every born again believer! These verses are speaking to God s amazing plan to make us all just like Jesus: Joh 12:24 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. Ro 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 1Jo 4:17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. What this means is that the Church, the born again believer, is as Jesus was when He walked the earth. Jesus was limited with time and space and yet his three year ministry turned the world upside down. Now that He is gone from the earth in physical form, he has been born into each believer so that His presence has been multiplied by millions. We are as He is to govern, to restore, to reverse the curse, to be as god to this fallen world around us. When we see Jesus do what Jesus did in scripture we are seeing what we are now! We Are The True Jedi The Star Wars story with the Jedi only resonates because it has truth connected to it. The Jedi were supposed to govern the galaxies with 7

justice and truth. They were the special ones with the force to help overcome anything that came their way. Why do we embrace such a fantasy? It is because in truth that is exactly what God did through Jesus in every born again believer. Unlike the Jedi that the force was strong in a certain few, God has made everyone His son and His daughter by giving us the same place, position, power, and presence of Jesus. This is the greatest secret and mystery of the gospel of grace that God has made us as His gods in the earth. If we understand this in all that it means we ll begin to recognize the amazing truth that God didn t just send His son to save us from our sins. He sent Jesus to save the world in all that it means. It means saving us and then empowering us through His name to heal the sick, restore the oppressed, deliver the defeated, cast out the demonic, raise the dead, and reverse the curse. God has intervened with Jesus and it s supposed to continue through all of us! We are God s intervention to save the world. We are His body, His ears, His eyes, His mouth piece, His life, His peace, His answer, His ambassadors, and His salvation to the world! When someone asks, Why didn t God stop this? or Why didn t God intervene? God has and it s through us! We are to go in His name and do what He d do. We go with His power and His anointing just as much as Jesus did because Jesus is in us (Col. 1:27)! I must say then, when someone indicts God about allowing this or that to happen; God only needs to look at us regarding the responsibility to allow or disallow because it falls with us. Then someone says that puts it all on us to do it? This is true; however, God has not left us alone. God has helped us by giving us His Spirit, His power, His name, His Word, His Son, His gifts, His leading, His grace, His love, what more could He do? If we will understand what we are in Christ and begin to function by faith in His already decided and poured out grace; I promise you, God will not let us down because God wants it more than we do. God is crying, God is grieving; but His hands are tied to ours. If God s people do not rise up with His name and authority there is nothing He can do. He gave it to us. When someone cries out, Why didn t God stop 8

this? The real burden lies with His Church. The real responsibility begins and ends with His body on the earth. If we don t do and don t operate in what God has given us in Jesus we are not the only ones that suffer. If we remain mere men, idle, useless, and abdicating our authority in Jesus name; the world around us in darkness and unbelief will suffer too then we turn around and blame God? The church sits quietly giving explanations like, God works in mysterious ways God has His reasons The Lord gives and the Lord takes away blessed be the name of the Lord. We ll all understand it by and by We make pointed statements like, The reason God couldn t stop what happened in the school is because God s not allowed in our schools. We kicked God out don t you know so that means evil is winning the day! We Are Empowered To Stop Evil As I see it now, God s grace has been poured out upon us we are to stop this! We are to pray, to prophesy, to speak to the mountain; to be led, to be open to the Spirit s call. I ll share a small but meaningful story. When our house was burglarized I had a distinct warning to close and lock our windows the night before. I felt it, I sensed it; but I didn t do it. The following day the open windows were an invitation to the thief. Someone might say, Well, any thief can break in That s true but the way this thief was operating was through open windows not breaking them to get in. Other houses had been or were stolen from and all of them had open windows too. The point I m bringing up is that prayer and being God conscious always leads to promptings, warnings, and impressions, even visions for us to deal with through prayer. Prayer includes speaking to the situations and exercising authority over them. The Newtown Shootings We grieve with the loss and bereaving parents and that is the least that we can do; however, if you understand what I m saying that the most 9

that we could do is rebuke these things, cancel demonic power in our weakest community members, stand against the power of darkness to deceive and torment, and be the intervention God made us to be! Conclusion: We need to see ourselves the way God made us. We need to have a different image inside of us from a helpless, powerless, useless, and weak believer to one that is joined of the Lord. God wants us to see in our hearts the way God made us so that we ll begin to act upon it. What we see inside determines what we ll be willing to do outside in this world. We will be willing to intercede according to the will of God when we see that God has made us to do what Jesus did? Proverbs gives us insight in several ways concerning the right thoughts and right believing: And, First, Pr 23:7a For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. Second, Pr 27:19 As in water face reflects face, so a man s heart reveals the man. These verses reveal the importance of how we see ourselves Then Paul s exhortation is that we guard our imaginations and thoughts to reflect God s thoughts and imaginations about us. 2Co 10:5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, This verse and others like it tell us that we are never alone and when we act in His name He is acting with us. 1Co 6:17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 10

We must realize that we could never reach God s glory by any measure or standard of our own; but then we are to know that we ve been given the gift of Jesus glory in all that it means! Joh 17:22 "And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: We are sent to do the same things, for the same purposes, by the same Spirit Joh 20:21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." We Are God s Intervention! With these truths we must understand then that God s intervention was and is Jesus to the world. Then, through Jesus in us we have become His hands, feet, mouth, ears, and eyes representing God to the World. We are His ambassadors (II Cor. 5:20) to heal, restore, deliver, cast out, and cleanse in His name (Matt. 28:20). We are God s intervention to overcome, to stop, and to deliver from evil. Does this mean we could have stopped the Newtown CT massacre? Absolutely, the body of Christ is to be in tune with the Holy Spirit and to take the steps necessary to prevent evil. When someone asks, Why did God allow this tragedy? The real question should be, Why did the body of Christ here on earth allow this? That question may just be too much and may be a shock to many of us. Many of us will not accept this kind of responsibility. This would put the blame at the feet of the church! I understand that; however, if God s people do nothing, doesn t that leave the door open for evil to triumph? It is important then that we be sensitive to God s leading. I believe God tried to stop this massacre but people, God s people, were not listening. Many aren t listening because they have no idea that God made us as His Jedi in the earth. Certainly this is one of the practical meanings of this passage: 11

James 4: 7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. We have been restored in Jesus name the dominion God intended from the creation. With this dominion is the right to declare, command, decree, and speak in His name! If we don t know this, if we don t embrace this, then the power of God is stopped and the world goes on as if God chooses or allows evil to prevail. This causes God s name to be blasphemed among the unbelievers. The end result of this understanding should be in my opinion, that we see it the way God s word made it for us. Then, seeing it as God s commission for His sons and daughters, we d begin to stand up, stand in prayer, and be completely surrendered to the things of God. This means that we would be filled with His Spirit ready to stand in the gap. The gap of stopping evil, resisting Satan s efforts among people, and being the intervention God made us to be. All of this takes an understanding heart, being established in the truth, a mindset full of God s grace, and a willingness to obey.
