OUR LADY OF LORETO PARISH FEBRUARY 7, 2016 YEAR OF MERCY The weight of the world leaves me exhausted, and the realization that I have strayed chokes me. I fall to my knees and beg for forgiveness. In that instant that very moment he renews and reminds me of a love far greater than worldly definition. He does not begrudge missed opportunities and selfish actions. He is merciful, and restores footing. He forgives and wipes clean my stains. He is love, and stands vigil over my life. Jennifer Hubbard resides in Newtown, CT. The younger of her two children, Catherine Violet, was a victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. 8 am Sunday Mass Returns to Loreto Msgr. Pedone has announced that beginning on Sunday, February 14, the 1st Sunday in Lent, there will be an 8 am Mass at Loreto. He made this decision in response to suggestions from several parishioners that an early Sunday morning Mass would be welcomed by the people. Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, hospitality ministers and altar servers are asked to communicate their interest in serving at the new Mass so that these ministries are covered. The architects have uncovered more significant damage to the beams supporting the bell tower than first thought. Obviously, this must be addressed. As promised, I want to keep you fully informed and seek your input in making recommendations to the Diocese. THEREFORE, I AM CONVOKING A MEETING OF PA- RISHIONERS OF BOTH OUR LADY OF MOUNT CAR- MEL AND OUR LADY OF LORETO ON SUNDAY, FEB- RUARY 21 ST AT 1:00 PM AT MOUNT CARMEL CEN- TER TO DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF BOTH PARISHES. I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO ATTEND. Monsignor Pedone ADULT CONTINUING ED CLASSES Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-St. Ann Parish will continue the Adult Continuing Ed Classes beginning on Monday February 8, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. During these sessions, we will be discussing what the season of Lent and how we can best participate in it in preparation for Easter. Anyone interested in taking part in these sessions, are asked to please contact Maria @ 508-842-7604. THE HOLY SEASON OF LENT In his papal bull of indiction by which he proclaims and inaugurates the Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis writes the season of Lent during the Jubilee Year should be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God s mercy. Lent is not just a time where we give up things, which probably are not good for us anyway, but a sacred time of centering our lives on the Lord Jesus and our relationship with him, removing the clutter that strangles and blocks our union with the Lord. The sacrifices we make during this season are meant to remind us that the Lord alone is sufficient for us and our needs and that God s mercy is a beautiful gift to us and it is relentless. Please make this Lent a of increased prayer, availing yourselves of the Sacrament of Penance, daily Mass, adoration, benediction and the Stations of the Cross on Fridays and acts of private devotion. In doing so we will be able to celebrate the feast of Easter with great joy. Please save the insert, which contains our Lenten schedule. Let us be open to the graces and blessings God wants to give us during this sacred season. LENT BEGINS ASH WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 TH Masses at Mt. Carmel Church: 7:00 am 12:15 pm; Service of the Word (no Mass) at 3:30 pm. Masses at Our Lady of Loreto Church: 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. Ashes will be blessed and imposed at all Masses and Service of the Word. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION BEGINNING AT 12:30 PM EVERY FRIDAY (ECEPT GOOD FRIDAY) AND ENDING WITH BENEDICTION AND STATIONS OF THE CROSS AT 6:30 PM WINTER WEATHER POLICY For the sake of safety, when Worcester schools cancel or delay class, morning Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church is canceled. Please listen to WTAG or WSRS for no school announcements. PARISH FOOD PANTRY Through your generosity, we are able to help families in our local area with food. Please drop off food items in the white cart in the rear of the church. Your donations make a big difference to some one who is hungry. Many thanks!

GUIDELINES FOR FAST AND ABSTINENCE ASH WEDNESDAY RITE OF ELECTION LENTEN RITES FOR CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS GUIDELINES FOR FAST AND ABSTINENCE Lenten fast and abstinence regulations for the Diocese of Worcester are as follows: Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics fourteen (14) years of age and older on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed by all Catholics who are eighteen (18) years of age but not yet fifty-nine (59) years of age on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are bound to fast may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these prescribed Lenten penitential practices. ASH WEDNESDAY The Order for the Blessing and Distribution of Ashes normally takes place during the celebration of Mass. However, when circumstances require, the blessing and distribution of ashes may take place outside of Mass. This latter celebration should always include a celebration of the liturgy of the word and blessing of the ashes. Ashes may not be distributed apart from one of these liturgical services. Special ministers of the Eucharist and other lay persons may assist in the imposition of ashes when there is a true pastoral need. RITE OF ELECTION The Rite of Election of Catechumens and Call to Continuing Conversion of Candidates will be celebrated on Sunday, February 14, at 3:00 P.M. in Saint Paul's Cathedral. This celebration is among the mandatory rites of adult initiation, as the Bishop is the one who calls these catechumens and candidates in the name of the Church to Easter sacraments. Registration forms are in the RCIA Worcester February Newsletter which you have received. Please return the forms to the Office Religious Education by Friday, February 5, 2016. LENTEN RITES FOR CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The Scrutinies are to be celebrated for the elect who will be initiated at the Easter Vigil. These rites are celebrated on the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent respectively using the readings from Cycle A. Presentations of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer take place during the 3rd and 5th weeks of Lent. The celebration of the Optional Rites for Holy Saturday morning are also encouraged. For detailed information on these rites refer to Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, paragraphs 157 through 205 and also to our diocesan guidelines, Journey in Faith, paragraphs 40 through 43.
